Sometimes you've just got to think outside the box. I have an old draft somewhere that I've been meaning to resurrect (for the second time) that addresses suicide in police custody.

Is this a forum to submit a draft for issue? I am interested to write an issue (or issues, if I have more idea), and I am willing to learn more from our issue editors on how to write good issues.

Yes. Create a new [DRAFT] thread (that's just a new thread with [DRAFT] as the first word in the title), and then post your issue content in the body. You should get feedback from other players over the next weeks or so. Be patient - feedback is usually slow.

I'm going through my old NS drafts and posting some of them to the forum, including some issues. Looking at one of them, I was clearly inspired by the debates about "grime"/"chav" subculture in the UK ~2006 (I've been playing this game too long... ¬_¬). Are there any issues about this sort of thing, and would there be scope for a new one? Looking through the issues there are a few about juvenile delinquency or rap music, but not really about the cultural aspects - but I may be missing something obvious.

You're going to have to expand a bit on what the ideas were for us to be able to say.

Got Issues Update no.2

  • Issues added since last update: 14
  • Issues fixed since the last update: innumerable
  • Queue of submitted issues: 985!!!! This is down from 2,160 in June.
  • New macros - after years of protests, violent insurrections and bombardments of rotten fruit, the admins have added support for demonyms. This have been incorporated into issues, so that Ballons, Amorians, and Mousebumplesians have the representation they no doubt deserve.
  • A new pluralisation code (the Conjugator Mk IX Grammar Simulator shard™) means that the game makes a ham-fisted attempt educated guess at how best to pluralise your custom fields.
  • Issues chains are now live! Chains are issues that follow directly on from each other, depending on your choices. Initially, this is a small chain (starting with #361 "@@CAPITAL@@, We Have A Problem"), and another issue chained off a particularly controversial option from an old favourite. However, we have the potential to add much longer chains describing a whole series of events. One such chain is in the works, although given the complexity to it, it's unlikely to be seen in the immediate future.
  • We're currently reviewing our range of industries and government departments. For those unsatisfied with the presence of a Basket-Weaving Industry, but lack of representation for pharmaceuticals, construction or finance, things might be about to change! The first such addition is the International Aid government department, which should be appearing on nations imminently.
  • The issues team might be expanding soon - yes, we're doing exactly what we said we'd never do again, and holding a Third Issues Contest.

I'll write up a full draft. :)

I had another issue idea, but I couldn't make it work so I thought I'd throw it out there. NS is ~12 years old now, and in that time cellphone technology has advanced a lot. The old cellphone issue ("Mobile Maladies") reflects that. Perhaps it's time for a new issue relating to cellphones? Things like controversial apps, underage selfies, freemium games/IAPs running up huge bills, data privacy, cellphone coverage: these are all issues that feature in the news every day; by contrast, when was the last time anyone thought about the Crazy Frog ringtone?

I was trying to write an issue about IAPs, but if anyone had any ideas on this area in general, I'd happily comment on any draft they came up with as I feel it would be a good issue to move NS with the times.

Hello, I seem to have an interest in creating an issue, and I was wondering if this idea is a good one.

My idea is concerning the dilapidation of a nation's railways, and how the government would respond to that.

I want to see an environmental issue of some sort based on the writings of that famous environmentalist, Theodor Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss. I'm not saying we need one, it's just that I have the start of an option stuck in my head as an earworm, and I have to get it out by posting it here. Feel free to steal it and run with it.

[option] A lobbyist with a fierce mustache and muddy work boots sits down opposite you. "My name is Dave Lorax, and I speak for the trees. Your environment policies are making us wheeze! If we don't make some changes, we'll all get diseased. Give us funding for planting some Trufullas, please!
[effect]the hillsides are blooming with Trufalla trees

I figure a different Seuss analog character and some really obnoxious rhyming would make this one a lot of fun. Post it in the forums and/or submit it in the contest!

I have been on NS for a little while now and I've just been wondering if there is any issue on two things: 1) copyright 2) Net Neutrality.

For number one I was thinking something like an obvious copy movie becomes popular, and of course the creators of the original complain. For net neutrality I was considering the companies just getting tired of having to provide the same service to the websites of random people as they do to their own sites.

Any comments?

I was trying to come up with a decent idea-and I came up with this-What if there was some kind of death because someone went to McDonalds for breakfast every day? I think the options would include:
Government-controlled diets
Banishment of fast food restaurants
Displayment of nutritional information
Silencing of people obsessed with health

It sounds a bit similar to a couple of existing issues: #72 and '288 have similar option outcomes.

This'll sound wacky, but I was just wondering if there is any issue with an issue revolving around a volcano popping up in the middle of the nation? You know, you wake up one day and there's just a big ol' volcano where a small city used to be....

That seems a bit too sudden to be realistic and teeters (if not crosses) on the border of legitimate issue and Easter Egg.
Perhaps the devastation of an eruption? I could forsee one option were the greedy capitalistic businessman wants to turn the city into a tourist attraction Pompeii style.

I understand where you're coming from, but it's an issue based on this...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Par%C3%ADcutin

There are already several issues involving devastation handling, like the meteorite one. I was thinking more along the lines of how the nation reacts to realizing they are on a potentially dangerous fault line, with about 5 reactions ranging from declaring war on the volcano, to obsessive prayer, to flooding the nation full of scientists.

But does that still possibly come across as a bit too far-fetched?

Is there an issue based around the current anti-vaccination movement?

An issue regarding "Floor-Crossing" by politicians could also work since I don't think that's been done before.

Not really. The existing vaccination issue is more about the civil liberties aspect of mandatory vaccinations.

A couple of updates for the Primer?
  • International Aid is now a spending category
  • The economy graph now splits between Private / Public / State-owned / Black-market
