I think it's clear what happened. Max Barry is dead and is now a brain in a jar, and when someone becomes an issue editor, they swear a sacred oath in a dark, secret grove in Forest and give up their nation to combine with the singularity of Max's mind.

That also explains why IEs can't be commended for work they did while as an IE, since it would be uncovered that Max is multi-ing every IE out there.
