Ohmigod, its like a pre-built issue. It's even got a crazy third response in the form of internet meme grieving.

Yeah, it's not that amazing.

Back when it happened, it was a big deal in the media. You never saw any stories about it?

If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. | Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

I'm actually curious as to how it was covered internationally (probably not much if at all) because it isn't actually of any importance even though our national news ran wild with it.

True... looks like the BBC ran it under World News, but not in its main news section. No idea if they mentioned it on the telly, I consume almost all my news online.

I suspect that an occurrence in a zoo in America was probably of greatest interest in America. World news is a bit like that.

For example did you know that recently...:

- In India it's recently become mandatory to play the national anthem before cinema performances, and for everyone to stand?
- Kyrgyzstan's donkey exports to China are coming under scrutiny?
- That The Gambia is in the midst of a constitutional crisis?

I certainly didn't, till I did some world news googling to make a point for this post. :)

The Gambia's constitutional crisis has been frontpage news for the last week...

Anyway, there are 97 nations that have "Harambe" in their nation name and 23 nations in "RIP Harambe" region, so it seems like it's pretty well known about on NS. It would make for a good issue, although aspects of the "protests" might not pass the PG-13 barrier.

(Interestingly, Harambe as a nation name itself will become available through the reuse system within a year!)

So I guess NS has lots of Americans who spend a lot of time on the internet. Who'd have thought, eh? :)

So if you all people have known about this for this long, why's there no issue submission yet, eh?

I couldn't figure out significance at the time, to be honest.

I mean, thinking over it now, I can see potential for a general zoo/safari and animal rights over (consenting) spectators issue.

These are all great ideas for issues! Someone who actually reads the news might make drafts on all these occurrences.

Obviously there's room for both but, I've been toying with an issue about a zoo selling art painted by an animal and questioning whether the animal or the zoo own the art. A bit of bummer about the "Fantastic Beasts and how nation harmed them" issue is it makes it hard to write a good 'are zoos okay issue', maybe your idea could be a way of getting at that.

I noticed that we don't seem to have any issues about vehicle licences.
You know, about who is allowed to drive a car (or pilot a helicopter) or whatnot. There's an idea for someone.

Here's an issue idea for you guys. The audio and music industry is filled with snake oil. All sorts of products from headphones to guitar cables to FLAC music files claim to deliver lossless audio quality. While this is technically true, the difference is physically impossible to distinguish with our ears. In one double-blind test, test takers were asked to distinguish between a $300 guitar cable and a wire coat hanger that had been straightened. The test takers were not able to do so. The issue to write on would be to decide when something is a lie or not.

As it happens, "aspiring pilots must be personally vetted by the Minister of Transportation before receiving their license" has just been added as an effect line. We'll have to wait until the issue is posted to see how close it is.

Just thought of something that doesn't seem to be already covered: there could be an issue for building a network of underground survival shelters. For the inevitable doomsday. Like US did during the cold war.

Could even use a chained event for nations that later become pacifistic: "what the heck do we do with all these shelters?"

The issue about naming a capital city has a "build it underground for safety" option, does that count?

I took that to be along the lines of making sure that the government/military survived bombings, not the rest of the population.

I'm thinking about writing an issue about kids playing hookie, are there any already existing issues that cover this topic

I'm afraid so: #160. A carefully constructed follow up to one of those choices might work.
