Okay, so apparently almost everything is legal in my nation. Nice to know.

We don't say that because that isn't breaking and entering. Accepting abortions in the cases of rape and health of the mother are still classified as abortions.

Medical marijuana is legal in my state. I don't have a license for it, so it's illegal for me. Doesn't change the fact that it is still legal in some circumstances (and those circumstances are capable of being gamed). Therefore marijuana is restricted but legal in my state. It'd be silly to say otherwise. Same principle with this issue.

Issue 449, Big Fracking Problem

"I don't think you understand the magnitude of these environmental issues," says Georgina Dovey, the organizer of the anti-fracking protest movement No Fracking Way. "Fracking can pollute the air and contaminate groundwater with toxic chemicals, which will end up in million of people's drinking water.

It should be either "a million people's" or "millions of people's." Sorry, NoQ

I'm not a fan of that anyway, so I will look at rewriting it.

Bump this again in two weeks to either (a) remind me or (b) confirm that I've done it.

Thanks.

Castle laws let me kill a man in cold blood. Murder is still illegal.
Police officers may consume narcotics to further an investigation. They may pass this protection on to citizens aiding an investigation. Coca Cola imports 100 metric tons of active coca leaves each year and denatures them in New Jersey. The flavor is in your soda. The cocaine itself does not leave the United States; it's passed on to a pharmaceutical company. Cocaine is still illegal.
In some jurisdictions, I can take and keep pictures of my own children in the bathtub that I would be unable to transfer. Child pornography is still illegal.
In other jurisdictions, I cannot take and keep pictures of my own children in the bathtub if I would be unable to transfer them. There is still a right to privacy.
Likewise, I cannot yell "Fire!" in a crowded movie theater despite possessing freedom of speech.

Forgive me for running out of examples so soon. The law is never a binary condition, if nothing else I can be excused any act by showing I was not sane at the time. The subsequent required psychiatric therapy can be compared to the diagnosis and ongoing treatment necessary to obtain medical marijuana.

I understand that the nuance would be a hindrance to coding issues that affect abortion, where in some nations it is illegal in the practical sense but the door is open to extend or retract already existing governmental protections. It would be too limiting to require all of those issues be worded ambiguously enough to cover all situations. Maybe someday I'll have a suggestion.

Is our children learning

Postby Narakou » Wed Oct 14, 2015 1:18 am

The title of "Is our children learning?" is grammatically incorrect.

It should be "Are our children learning?" or "Are the children learning?"

Thank you.

Hello! I'm only two weeks late.

The term "vet" has not been used anywhere else in the issue base; veterans are always referred to as "veterans" rather than abbreviated to "vets". "Vet" is much more widely used and understood as referring to veterinarians rather than veterans - I'm really not seeing a reason to change that.

Issue #180: Mobile Maladies

I just looked at this issue today. I don't know when this was originally written, but it's now 2015. Quite frankly, "mobile phones" and Y2K are ancient history. Because the complaint of mythical deadly radio waves has been debunked and smartphones have become ubiquitous, I think that this issue needs to be completely replaced by a new issue about smartphones, tablets, and their 'apps'.

Were the whole of my experience with the English language from the corpus of NationStates, you would have a reasonable point. However, people natively resolve ambiguity based on the current context, and not on the mannerisms of the source. If you were to hear someone pronounce [burth] without any other context, you would conclude that it refers to the painful bit between pregnancy and population statistic. On a battleship, talking with sailors, no matter how many times the sailors used the word bunk, say [burth] and they will hear berth, because that is the context they find themselves in.

I have a stat in my census for Defense Forces, and I have a stat for Healthcare, but the second one does not move when I change the laws on how animals are treated. For the purposes of context, we are definitely on a battleship, no matter how common it is to be living in the suburbs.

This could be overridden were the usage of vet confined to the issue that contains the decision, however the usage is a part of the tag for making the decision. It is intentionally stripped of the context that would help in processing it and hangs out on your front page for days after you've touched the issue in question.

Personally, I'm much more used to reading "vet" as "veterinarian" while always spelling out "veteran" in full, even on NationStates. It helps that "veteran" is easier to spell ;)

If you need context, I'll point out the veterans aren't generally known for carrying out neuterings, while veterinarians are.

Issue 57, Electronic Plague in @@NAME@@

Option 3 reads:
"Yeah, wonderful! Fix a virus by releasing an AI that will likely turn on its creators? Are you people trying to get us all killed?!" Decries infamous technophobe....

"Decries" shouldn't be capitalised.

Issue 191, option 3:
"You're kidding, right?" burbles anaemic patient Anne-Marie Cohen from a hospital bed. "I'm not going to let some closed-minded priest tell me what I can and can't do with my blood! But I don't think people should be forced to give blood; they just need incentive, that's all. Like money. Trust me, any kind of '@@CURRENCY@@s For Blood' scheme will have them almost begging to donate. It's the only humane way to ensure that people like me are getting the care we need. If you're worried about funding just get it from those religious nuts... they're not helping anyone with it."

The @@CURRENCY@@ macro returns the currency in lowercase, which is quite jarring when paired with the words that come after it. ("quinoes For Blood", for example, clearly looks wrong.) This needs to be fixed somehow. I can't propose a solution because I don't know how the macros work.
James 1:26-27, Matthew 7:21-23
If you claim to be religious but don’t control your tongue, you are fooling yourself, and your religion is worthless. Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you. | Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. On judgment day many will say to me, ‘Lord! Lord! We prophesied in your name and cast out demons in your name and performed many miracles in your name.’ But I will reply, ‘I never knew you. Get away from me, you who break God’s laws.’

Postby Zongzi » Sun Oct 25, 2015 12:29 pm

Hello ! We appear to have found an error in issue 44 , option 2.

Option 2

"Are you kidding?" states political activist @@RANDOMNAME@@. "Torture never works. If anything, it should be outlawed. What do we want to become, genocidal maniacs?

The option is missing a quotation mark at the end !

Issue #450

Option #2

Third Line.

"Look, we're not going to agree on this any time soon, so why not make both sides happy?" suggests Anne-Marie Obama, cultural anthropologist and author of the academically acclaimed book 'Can We Please Just Respect Everyone And Everything All The Time?' "Lockdownn doesn’t want to be remembered as the brutal oppressor, and our new, eh, friends, doesn’t: don't want their hardships swept under the rug. So, let each territory have their own version of history! What could possibly go wrong?"

Issue 197

Option 1
"We should have a perfect right to feed our babies where we want and when we want without fear of harassment from anyone," declares Catherine Gratwick, a likewise young mother. "Why should women hide themselves away just to assuage the silly attitudes of these narrow-minded fogies? It's totally natural, and much healthier than bottle-feeding for both mother and child so why the fuss? Today, women are afraid to breastfeed in public and the law should be on their side - if not for their benefit, then for that of the children."

There should be a comma after "child" and before "so".

Issue 305

Option 4
"All ze jobs are VHERE?!" General Von Gugelheimer lets out a piercing scream.

Unless "Von" is meant as an actual first name, which I doubt, it shouldn't be capitalised, as titular prefixes (von, de, de la, etc) normally aren't.

Issue 155

Option 2
"I'm not a criminal just because I'm seventeen!" shouts honors student, Sarah du Pont. "Yeah, I like to go out partying, but I'd never hurt anybody! Besides, we've already got enough problems with these pigs breathing down our necks. If anything we need MORE freedom. It's time for the government to step up to the plate and tell these power hungry swine to stop cramping our style!"

Power-hungry has a hyphen.
