I think folk are divided on whether occupation names ending in -man can be considered to be gender-neutral terms or not.
I recognise that most people would say a policeman is male (which is why we documents say "police officer"), but some usages are less agreed on.
Personally, I would have said garbage collector, just like I tend to say firefighter, postal worker and bartender. However, I'm equally aware that I've known plenty of women who call themselves by job roles ending in -man.
I'm basically thinking that if it were me writing or editing an issue, I'd probably prefer to use gender-neutral language. However insisting on this in the issues of others could be seen as being overly didactic. That in mind, I'll ping NoQ, let him decide, and support whatever decision he makes.
