It's an American thing. Though other nations have similar things.

Including, in fact, Australia.

On the NSIndex page, the later issues in terms of number does not receive a fallout line for some of the options. Why?

We're not responsible for or affiliated with NSIndex in any way. You're best off asking them.

It is, however, a wiki. So if you think it's missing something, then you just edit it.

On the subject of unofficial wikis that benefit from editing, I always flag this as a source of fun which some may be interested to expand:

The problem is that our contributors have to actually get the issue and then choose the missing options to find the results text. It’s basically like the main NationStates Issues **SPOILER ALERT** thread, but with results text and further analysis. Furthermore, I’ve got rid of all the speculative Issues effects last month in response to complaints about the lack of accuracy.

A "source of fun" with which one should avoid contact on any day when one doesn't have several hours to spare for following links to other interesting-looking pages within it... ;)
I noticed recently that the 'Nationstates' entry seemed to have been edited at some point within the last year or so: Was that your work?
I keep meaning to register there so that I can add Bears Armed to the nations with their own details in the entry's 'Characters' section...

In part. I'm "Asklepios" on there.

Issue 201 is famous for having pirate speak buttons. But they're not changed on the confirmation page.

"Confirm" could be something like "Full sail ahead!".

#826 has a typo. "Licencing" isn't a word. According to Grammarist, "licence" is only the noun form in non-American dialects of English. It is never used as a verb. In American English, "licence" isn't a word at all. So the use of "licencing" as a verb in the title should be fixed. And since that is the only use of "licence" (the rest of the issue uses "license" as both the noun and verb form), I think that one change is all that's needed. I know that while not all issues are held to the same dialect of English, IEs try to keep it consistent within the same issue, and #826 already uses American English almost exclusively.

The speaker in #261 option 1 has a randomized gender despite being described as a "garbageman".

Should issue 39 be valid for nations that haven’t criminalized adultery?

So, an interesting one: #649's title has been recapitalized to "Made in Maxtopia", but in the issue text itself still makes use of "Made In @@NAME@@" and "Made In Maxtopia".

Thought-provoking observation, that.

I think folk are divided on whether occupation names ending in -man can be considered to be gender-neutral terms or not.

I recognise that most people would say a policeman is male (which is why we documents say "police officer"), but some usages are less agreed on.

Personally, I would have said garbage collector, just like I tend to say firefighter, postal worker and bartender. However, I'm equally aware that I've known plenty of women who call themselves by job roles ending in -man.

I'm basically thinking that if it were me writing or editing an issue, I'd probably prefer to use gender-neutral language. However insisting on this in the issues of others could be seen as being overly didactic. That in mind, I'll ping NoQ, let him decide, and support whatever decision he makes.

Sure.

It makes no reference to marriage or monogamy, instead just mentioning an affair that some are viewing as scandalous. It's up to you whether you agree there is any scandal there.

So, someone would have to be totally obsessive to catch something like that, and unhealthily obsessive to then google what the usual approach is to this on non-allcaps real world labels, and adjust things accordingly.

And yeah, done that, and changed the issue text to match the title.

Issue 20, option 4:
“Guns don’t kill people, people kill people,” says NRA head honcho Ken Swift. “If you outlaw guns, only outlaws will have guns. Is that what we want? Think, people. The answer isn’t kung-fu and it definitely isn’t banning guns. What you need to do is encourage us law-abiding folk to always carry a gun. Shoot first, ask questions later. That’s what I always say.”

Shouldn't the full form of "NRA" be used? I mean, not everyone is from the US.

Why does #847 option 1 lower civil rights, when it's explicitly described as being opt-in?

Eh, we've heard of the NRA outside of the US. Besides, Jennifer Government uses the abbreviation without explaining it, so good enough for Max, good enough for me.

Good question, and Gnejs asked the same one backstage. Free Joy State's very reasonable defence of this position is that "more questions on the national census always has a reducing effect on privacy" (and hence the right to privacy). Being the author, I stayed out of this debate, but for the record I think it's not an unreasonable stat choice. It stems more from the implication of a society less interested in the right to privacy rather than a direct measure that reduces freedoms. However equally, I think it's a stat that others may have left off. From an author's point of view, I didn't envisage it as being anti-liberty, but I get the editing rationale.

Ultimately I'm willing to defer to named editor on this, and don't think a change is indicated unless Free Joy State wants to change it.

I have a question.

No. 492: The Artwork in the Attic

“Pay to see them!” gasps Declan Gutenberg, the Maxtopian Minister of Culture and part-time art critic. “There are paintings of great historical and cultural value to my country in that collection! They should be returned to Maxtopia with all due haste! Just imagine ‘The Fall of St. Barrysburg’ hanging on the walls of the Maxtopian National Museum in the very room where it was painted by Whilhelm Daniel Negan as the noises of war reached his ears from outside his study. Does it not stir your soul?”

So was the museum the artist's studio? Because that's kind of a strange choice for an art studio.

#656 Ransom Noted

PostPosted: Wed Jan 24, 2018 6:59 pm
by The Glorious Third Reign of Templedom
NationStates Issue No. 656 Ransom Noted addresses payments to foreign rebels in exchange for the release of hostages.

How about a fifth option: Chief-of-Staff @@randomname@@ says, "That's right! We will never negotiate with terrorists. But that doesn't mean we should send our special forces boys on a wild goose chase after private r... these journalists. Let's just threaten to level the capital of Maxtopia with our glorious ICBMs unless their government returns those hostages to us safe and sound."

(Result: the hostages will probably all be K.I.A 'd and returned home in coffins draped with @@nation@@ flags.)
