You might want to look up the lyrics to "Big Yellow Taxi".

Many issues are dotted with references to things that some people get while others don't. "Ghost Riders on the Sly", for example, is a reference to the country song "Ghost Riders in the Sky". Some got that, some didn't. Those that did got some extra ... joy, I guess, out of it.

They're like mini-easter eggs, if you will.

Does it ... have to? Bearing in the mind the thread in question is in no way an "official" one, it's a player maintained thread.

Well, helping to fix old issues depends on being able to notice those little "easter eggs", because neither me nor you want to waste time on "mistakes" that aren't mistakes, but rather well-hidden jokes and references.

Shouldn't "Is Our Children Learning?" be "Are Our Children Learning?" or are you playing off the whole uneducated thing?

I think a rather obvious grammatical mistake like that would have been caught by now if it wasn't intentional.

Is the old thread still available so I can look up some errors I reported before, but were never resolved?

Issue #94, Computer Users Fed Up With Heaps of Spam!

Postby Aibohphobia » Mon Jun 25, 2012 4:55 pm

2. "A ban on all spam is a restriction on our freedom of speech and on the freedom of the press!" screams Kayla Mombota president of Citizens for Internet Freedom. "What is the government to say what is and isn't commercial spam? Could they haul charity representatives off to jail for seeking donations? Could they jail politicians for using e-mail to try and gain votes? Could they arrest me if I accidentally send my erotic novel-in-progress to the wrong address? Seriously, spamming is a subjective offense and as such should not be considered a crime."

No, it's not. And this isn't about anything else, as Issue Editors can only edit Issues.

You've been posting quite a few of these lately. Most of them aren't actually problems with the issues, they're just a matter of personal grammar presence. Please understand that we tend to use both British English and American English (depending on the Editor), but we're not looking for Strunk & White perfection. Unless it's an actual problem with an issue (as opposed to a grammar preference, we're probably not going to address it, and it's just adding clutter to this thread.

Of course we're not asking that

If it's a serious, or obvious, grammar error, please do let us know. If it just comes down to it's fine the way it is, but you'd prefer it another way, please don't.

It's very hard to differentiate, and I don't want to get on your nerves.
To me, a missing comma is a mistake, especially if the resulting text is then hard to read.
Dealing with English and German is very problematic... There are no rules, everyone does as they please.
I really hate it to annoy you (since that's what I'm apparently doing), therefore, maybe, it's better to not try to help at all.

I think Fris was referring to the 'of vs for/towards' debate and corrections of that manner. In the end, it doesn't matter which we use if they all convey the same message.

You have a critical eye. That's a good thing. But having a new post or two every couple of days pointing out the missing commas is a bit much (to your credit, your comma corrections have been right from what I've seen). Given the admin's limited time, severe mistakes (like dropped macros and such) get precedent over minor punctuation. When it comes to "screams @@RANDOMNAME@@ president of Citizens for Internet Freedom" vs "screams @@RANDOMNAME@@, president of Citizens for Internet Freedom", 99.5% of players aren't going to notice that dropped comma. It would help if you compiled a list of mistakes you find into one post(as Ballo has done in the past), so the thread doesn't become overburdened with multiple posts of slight mistakes. That way, when an admin goes to fix them, they have a list in a single post rather than two dozen posts each separated by a debate as to whether or not it was a mistake.

Issue #157, Sergeants Are Too Nasty, Say New Recruits
2. "THEY WANT WHAT?!" screams Sgt. Burkz, while pressing back a rising vein on her neck. "This is WAR, not DAYCARE! If anything, the training standards should be tougher! If I want to whip some pasty-faced, beer-gutted greenhorn because he can't climb over a razor-wire fence then I should be be given the permission to do so right away! The cry-babies won't like it, but they can run home back to their rich daddies if that's the way they're having it. War isn't a walk in the park, and training shouldn't be either. For all our sakes."

then I should be be given the permission to do so right away!
Issue #8, Nudists Demand Time In Sun
1. "For too long, our bodies have been trapped in these prisons of cotton and polyester!" yelled protester Robin Fort, while apparently developing a nasty case of sunburn. "We must repeal the puritanical laws that make public nudity a crime. My body--my choice to dangle!"
2. "I agree," mused sociology professor Mohammed Sparkle. "But I don't think the protestors are going far enough. Public nudity shouldn't be an option: it should be compulsory. Nudity is highly liberating. And it would put that disgusting "Hooters" out of business once and for all."
3. "Whoa, whoa," says noted accountant Gertie Lopez. "Are these people serious? The last thing I want to see when I'm out for a coffee is some lumbering, over-weight nudist coming down the sidewalk toward me. If people want to get naked, they can do it in the privacy of their own homes. Think of the children!"

"yells protester", "muses professor".
Every other issue uses Present Simple, I think. Only this one went to the past for some reason unknown. And only for the first two options.
Issue #128, Ban The Burka?
Schools are considering banning all signs of religious affliation to "promote unity amongst students". Minority groups and civil rights activists have expressed their outrage in protests outside the Valodor Parliament.

affiliation
3. "Who needs religion anyway?" asks Evan Shiomi, Professor of Biology at Valodor University of Science. "Our nation is swamped in the mumbo-jumbo spouted by these money hungry crackpot evangelists. I say the people should be spared from these wacko delusions of gods and demons. ALL symbols of religion should be removed from ALL public spaces! Now that's what I call freedom."

money-hungry
Issue #60, Supreme Court Nomination
The death of 108 year old Supreme Court Justice Bill Cheswick has created an opening on the bench. Below are the possible nominees.

108-year-old

Issue 267, Controversial Coup Causes Commotion

A coup in a neighbouring country has seen a mercenary force led by retired @@NAME@@ian general @@RANDOMNAME@@ take charge of the peaceful backwater, purging the opposition, and suppressing freedoms. Despite the new leader making a dubious promise to hold elections, the government in exile is demanding that @@NAME@@ takes action.

The present indicative is used at the end of the second sentence. This is not the correct form. The present subjunctive should be used.

Thus, the beginning of the issue should say:

Issue 267, Controversial Coup Causes Commotion

A coup in a neighbouring country has seen a mercenary force led by retired @@NAME@@ian general @@RANDOMNAME@@ take charge of the peaceful backwater, purging the opposition [also, the comma here should be removed] and suppressing freedoms. Despite the new leader making a dubious promise to hold elections, the government in exile is demanding that @@NAME@@ take action.
