NationStates' "logic"

Postby Anvilonia » Mon Nov 14, 2011 7:48 pm

Recently I have legalized trading nuclear/biological/chemical weapons and not only did this not budge my economy, as suggested in the issue, but my political freedoms took a dive. :palm:

Can anyone explain how this us supposed to make sense? Shouldn't increasing trade of a highly sought after product boost my economy? And why did this dent my political freedoms?

Hopefully someone can offer clarification and advice. I really am tired or having a "developing" economy and I'd rather not trash my healthcare, welfare or environment.

Lastly, does anyone have similar experiences where a passed legislation does something so random you can't help but say "
What the fuck, NationStates?
"

I figured since most of the events have an obvious neoliberal bias that cutting my 75% income taxes would improve my economy. But no, it knocked off 10 points and apparently caused all government workers to have to mortgage their homes to afford food. Ok then. The only things that seem to approve the economy are morally abhorrent choices. Improving education and public services is of course neutral at best and devastating at worst.

Well, in an effort to pull up my ecomomy I did something I hate. I allowed building on the greenbelts thinking (well this ought to do something but noooooo. My economy did NOT ONLY CHANGE AT ALL, but now my national animal teeters on the brink of extinction due to "widespread deforestation" and I have a frickin cancer rate now.

Fucking NationStates, how does it work?

Sometimes economic recovery takes time to process. Sometimes something else is holding your economy down. In your case, it's because you're a socialism, and socialism usually means bad economy. Not that it's impossible to make an economically powerful socialism, but I am fairly sure that it's impossible to do so if you're already socialist. Try legalizing private enterprise, and THEN working on your economy.

Also consider that NS is a bit of a silly game. Issues both implement the caricaturised view of the ideology behind an issue choice, but also the caricaturised view of what opponents think it does. Imagine a liberal making fun of his own position. Now imagine a conservative making fun of the same position. Take both jokes and implement them both. That's how NS issues work.

NS has never really been fair. After all, the mods are just a bunch of pissed-off llamas from Japan.

Nationstates is biased against Republican politics. That's why.

You'd think outlawing nudity and graffiti and cheese throwing at politicians would make sense, but all of a sudden your economy is crap and political and civil rights are outlawed. WTF? If someone doesn't allow nudity in public or damaging people's property, it doesn't make their nation into North Korea...

What confuses me the most is what exactly "corruption" in NS actually is. I mean, the issue about some divers finding gold reserves in a public basin increases corruption of the state seizes the assets found on public soil. How is that corruption?

I take exception to this. I am a duck, and ducks call no nation home. Though they do generally seem to be pissed-off.

You'll notice that issues repeat. With my main nation I was initially committed to allowing small scale capitalism. But when I got the monopoly issue I'd 'harvest' the capitalists for the greater good. Cf the bolsheviks & the 'nepmen'. A functioning socialist economy is easier with a large population in NS at least in my experiance.

Now apparently I have gone from having the highest net trade in the region to having no exports at all... This is kinda bullshit.

Allow public nudity. Next day find out 1% more of my population are dying of exposure. That's over 38 million people.
38 million people took to the streets and ran around naked until they died.

Welcome to NationStates.

To be honest, I thought that all of the issues worked at least somewhat along these lines would be common knowledge by now, what with this game being 9 years old. It's been in the FAQs for awhile.

EDIT: For fuck's sake, I've been wasting almost 9 years of my life on NS. What the hell have I been doing D:

And if he'd made nudism compulsory, instead, then they'd have died from sunburn... :D

1% of people who die, not 1% of your population. Unless you've got a nation of corpses that is...

As to the OP, yes I've had issues do the exact opposite of what I thought should happen. It's frustrating, but it's the nature of the beast with this silly game.

Two issues that are easy Economy boosts are Reclaim the Streets! - the 3rd option that gives gov't funds to the auto industry, and the issue Give Us Money, Quoth the Poet. Give money to the poets.

I gave up on the economy of NS, it understimates too much investments in education, science, infrastructures, ...

I'm focusing on maintaining things like "crime is unknown" and "utter lack of prison", "healthy population" with "beautiful environment" and similar.
