Economics of "Affirmative Action in @@NAME@@?"

Postby Aurora-Nova » Fri Jun 10, 2011 9:44 pm

The Issue
After a recent high-profile case of a minority student being refused admission to a traditional, prestigious college, civil rights activists, conservatives, and teachers are up in arms about affirmative action and ethnic equality in education.

The Debate
  1. "This is just another attempt to discriminate against people of color," declares civil-rights activist, former TV commentator and unabashed publicity speaker Jack du Pont. "If people are disadvantaged in their upbringing then they should be given an 'equal' chance to succeed in college."
  2. "The affirmative action programs aren't necessary at all," rejoins conservative speaker and hair care product salesman Larry Frederickson. "If you really want to treat everyone equally, as you claim, how can you support special treatment for a few so-called minority groups? Besides, it would cost even more money to enforce."
  3. "I think you are both looney," says Falala du Pont, professor of liberal arts at Aurora-Nova National University. "All education should be open to everyone regardless of their grades in high school, economic status or academic prowess. Free college education should be available to every citizen of Aurora-Nova, no matter what the cost!"

Yes, I did a search and found a rather old topic on this, but not wanting to risk gravedigging, and the topic not answering my question, I figured I'd post a new topic.

Basically, I want to know how, if at all, the various options of this would affect my economic strength. I realize the third will raise taxes, and the first would add regulations, but I'm not sure if either of these would directly affect economic strength. Does anyone have any more information on which option would be best if I wished to strengthen my economy?

Thanks.

Hope you don't mind the slight thread necro, but I've been trying to find answers on this same issue, and can't find anywhere that answers the question of what this issue might do to the civil rights of a nation.

Anyone know? I mean, the question of affirmative action versus civil rights IRL isn't even agreed on, and if you throw in the randomness of some issue results, I don't know which way to go to keep my civil rights high.

Thanks in advance.
