Issues with 3 extremist opinions and no logical choice?

Postby Ron Paulica » Tue May 24, 2011 10:53 pm

The Issue

Several major city streets were clogged with bicycles this morning, as the environmental group 'Two Wheels Good, Four Wheels Bad' staged a protest. Several hundred riders ambled through downtown streets, blissfully ignoring the torrent of abuse hurled at them by thousands of motorists running late for work.

The Debate

"People are sick of dirty, smelly automobiles," said protest organizer Zeke Spirit. "They're choking the city, the environment--our lives! Cars must be banned!"

"The only thing people are sick of is long-haired idiots riding their bicycles at two miles an hour on major thoroughfares," says committed motorist Pip Li. "People shouldn't be able to protest like this. The government needs to crack down on them."

The Automotive Manufacturers Association, meanwhile, has called for government support. "It's clear that we need to boost the level of automobile support in this country. This protest this morning is a clear indication of... um... anyway, we need more government funds."

My only options are to ban cars completely, infringe on peoples rights to protest, or give government aid to automobile industry?

None of these options make a whole lot of sense for my country and this isn't the first time I've had 3 extreme choices. I'm sure the third option will boost economy in this game, but I'm really trying to stay away from corporatism since apparently my government is corrupt and wealthy businessmen are viewed with suspicion.

I'm trying to make my country a libertarian free-market kind of country, but need to strengthen the economy and try to make the public sector smaller but I don't think giving financial aid to the private sector makes a whole lot of sense for Ron Paulica.

Another issue with extremist choices were - when I heard that young children were gambling in my country, my only options were make gambling illegal, or let anyone of any age gamble. I ended up letting everyone gamble but somehow have a bad rep on my country description.

Should I just dismiss issues that don't have any logical choices or will that have negative consequences later on? I'm mostly just ranting but I guess I need some advice on how to handle these kinds of issues for the kind of government and society I am trying to lead.

Unfortunately, none of the three options seems to adhere to a free-market/libertarian ideology, however, if I were forced to pick one, I would choose the second, as it has the least impact on the nation's stats, except a minor hit on political freedom.

Personally? I'd choose to dismiss it, considering there's no answer fitting your nation.

You can always dismiss the issue.
95% of people on NationStates won’t read this, but as we speak, Libyan people are being massacred, because they’re rebelling against an unfair government. The elderly, women, children, everyone in Libya is in danger tonight. It’s genocide. Repost this in your sig to raise awareness and support the revolution!
