Issue with Issue

Postby Bahr al-Ameri » Sat Apr 09, 2011 1:05 pm

I got an issue today I'd like to see more options added to.

Keep The Greenbelt Green, Say Protesters
A group of environmentalists are protesting against plans to expand urban and suburban developments into greenbelts, the designated countryside between settlements.

1- Give us permission to build on the greenbelt; tree museum to keep the tree-huggers happy
2- we should increase police funding to deal with these troublemakers
3- We should put a stop to all encroachment into natural areas

I can imagine at least 2 other options-

4- "They want trees?" asks sage investor/philanthropist Warren McDuffy, "We'll give them trees. Set aside plots or even acres of land throughout the city as a sort of nature preserve. Charge a small fee for people to enjoy the beauty. This isn't a problem. All these people," he waves to the mass of protesters, "are customers."

5- "Yes, we need to balance settlements and natural areas," says your Minister of Natural Resources, Jane Doe. "But, we shouldn't put natural areas under the protection of corporations or investors. They might suddenly decide to turn natural parks into office parks. Rather, the government should supervise the program and allow everyone to enjoy the beauty of our nation. Might require a small tax increase, though."

But it'd ruin the joke.
I’m mostly here for... something to do, I suppose.

I too have found the options of some issues inadequate to address the problem - with the most obvious and best solution frequently excluded.
Leadership does not mean domination. The world is always well supplied with people who wish to rule and dominate others. The true leader is of a different sort: he seeks effective activity, which has a truly beneficent purpose. He inspires others to follow in his wake, and holding aloft the torch of wisdom, leads the way for society to realize its genuinely great aspirations.

Also, issues aren't supposed to contain every possible option. A lot of the time you have to make a difficult decision, and choose something that isn't entirely perfect.

As Sedge said, the whole point is
a) to have the main positions exaggerated,
b) to leave you with a bad feeling whichever option you choose,
c) to force you to choose between two or more evils.
Honestly, would issues be at all interesting if the best and most workable solution was always offered?

I didn't see a joke.

I see your point Sedge and MA, I just noticed sometimes an issue has only 2 options, sometimes 6. I concluded it was because some were written better than others.

Here's an idea that can be considered for future program changes- each issue has a whole slew of options, say 6-10 or so. But, when offered, only a portion of the options (say 2-4) are actually listed. Since the issues are recycled, would allow for some variety over time and give some interesting choices over the short-term.

How's that sound?

I doubt that'd happen, but you're welcome to suggest it in the Technical forum if you want.
