Issue 85 - Illegal File Sharing Flares!

Postby Samozaryadnyastan » Mon Apr 04, 2011 9:54 am

The Issue

A surprise raid conducted on ISPs over the last week in Samozaryadnyastan shows that more than 30% of all Internet data transfer in Samozaryadnyastan at one time or another is used by illegal file-shares to illegally distribute files, most notably songs.

The Debate

"What we need to do is hack their computers and format their hard drives," says Jazz Mistletoe, recording industry representative. "People need to be taught to not mess with the law. This is theft, pure and simple. And they're not only halving our revenue to tune of billions of Samoz Dollars, but you are also stealing a few hundredths of a Samoz Dollar from the artist for every song they steal. THINK OF THE STARVING ARTISTS!"

"Yo, dude, like, don't be hatin' man," says teenager Zeke Winters. "We're like, going to change the whole structure of our society. Everything should be like, publicly available to, like, everybody, dude. Copyrights are so, like, uncool man and we need to get rid of them. That'd be totally radical, and cool as well."

"Yo, dang, blizzity blang, yo, this ain't, right, yo," says Akira Fellow, famous rapper with three platinum albums. "Dang, yo, we dang need to copy-protect my dang CDs, yo. That dang playability life dang decreases, yo, but it's the only way to stop this, dang, yo."

From my interpretation, Option 1 would either maintain my economy or slightly boost it, whilst impacting heavily on Civil Rights and/or Political Freedoms. Option 2 would probably cause my economy to plummet (due to mass pirating) but improve my civil rights. Option 3 sounds good - just copy-protecting CDs, but there might be something under the 'dang dang dang' I missed. Does anyone know if Option 3 particularly inpacts on anything?

I think option 3 would slightly harm your economy since it causes CD's to break sooner, thus deterring people from buying them.

Well, 1 and 2 will cause Civil Rights and Economy to completely bomb, respectively. 3 seems the most logical option to maximise everything.

mass pirating actually makes such a minuscule dent in the economy that you wouldn't even notice it.

IIRC, when I got this issue and picked option three, my economy tanked by eleven points and nothing else changed.

I had this issue like 2 days ago and I chose option 1. No more copyright issues, and my economy is still going well. Well, maximum 5 points lower.

I've just noticed Option 2 is about repealing copyright, not just pirating music.
So the economy wouldn't change or would improve since the market is now free to everything. In theory.

Yes, option 3 harms economy (and it's stupid). If you don't like radical options (War on Piracy or abolishing copyright), it's better to dismiss this issue.

If you dismiss an issue, is it replaced immediately with a new one, or does it simply delete that issue and go into 'skip a turn' mode, and you have to wait for the next issue slot?
