Help with #62 "Oh, the Angst," Please?

Postby Bozepolis » Sun Apr 03, 2011 12:22 pm

The issue:
#062: Oh, The Angst! [Uni Students; ed:Reploid Productions]

The Issue
In response to rising rates of depression related suicides, mental health groups have called for government funding to help support treatment programs, citing various surveys that indicate psychological disorders are often an overlooked problem.

The Debate
1. "Although it is often dismissed as an irrelevant complaint, depression is a real disease, it isn't just 'all in your head'," says @@RANDOMNAME@@, depression sufferer. "Depression has significant effects on groups and individuals, especially amongst teenagers. Every day, more and more people commit suicide because of this disease, but this could all be stopped if this country had a decent level of funding for support and public awareness programs."

2. "Screw them," @@RANDOMNAME@@, talkback radio host, stated yesterday. "Depression isn't a disease, it's just another example of today's youth finding something to complain about. Life's never been better. In fact, just yesterday, I bought my fourth BMW. And even if it is as serious as the bleeding hearts claim, then I say we leave it and cut some of the funding being wasted on these head cases. If a few whiners jump off a bridge, it'll be good for the genepool. Natural selection, my friends. It's a great thing."

3. "Actually, a lot of depression cases in teens are related to school and all the stress and pressure young people are under to succeed. A greater effort to correct the problem of depression should start there, with more funding so that schools can provide better counseling programs." Comments Dr. @@RANDOMNAME@@, author of the book "Tomato Soup for the Soul". "That way teens who are depressed can get help even if their parents can't or won't take them to see a psychologist."

I know that No. 1 increases healthcare funding and No. 3 increases education funding, but do either of those two options have any effect on civil rights and/or political freedoms?

If so, great. I'll pick one of those. But if not, then I might as well pick No. 2, because at least it looks like it will give the economy a boost.
Does anybody know?
Thanks.

Doesn't look like it'll effect any political or civil rights. #2 looks like it would just cut taxes, rather than boost the economy.
Can I cut myself to look pretty?

See, I don't mind jacking up taxes some in order to improve civil rights and/or political freedoms, but I'm loathe to raise taxes without a benefit to at least one of those things. And, by that same logic, if it's not going to hurt my civil rights and/or political freedoms, then why not slash taxes to the absolute minimum? Doesn't lowering taxes help the economy (according to the game algorithm, that is, not so true in real life)?
So I'm inclined to pick No. 2, unless 1 or 3 would improve civil rights and/or politcal freedoms (I imagine probably the former more likely than the latter).
Does anybody know?
Thanks.

No. There are a lot of options, which increase or lower tax rates without any effect on economy. According to the game algorithm, even 100% income tax doesn't hurt economy and private sector.

All right, so, I'm not hearing that Nos. 1 or 3 will help civil rights or political freedoms, so, since decision time is drawing near, I guess I'll go with No. 2, because I don't think it will hurt anything (except for the suicidal folks, I guess).
I guess I do have another couple hours though, in case anybody can give me a definite answer about the effects of Nos. 1 and 3.
Thanks.

To my recollection, it didn't actually affect any of my stats. Just boosted education funding when I selected option 3.

Same. Went from no crime due to the police force to no crime due to the police force and social policies when I picked it.
