Condemn Resolutions

Postby Letoilenoir » Fri Jan 28, 2011 3:02 pm

What, exactly, do these do vis a vis the mechanics of Gameplay?

All they seem to do is give the recipient a badge, one that some seem to regard as abadge od honour - yes I'm looking at you Unknown ,

Surely if a region is condemned it has contravened the rules (or spirit) of the game and it would be reasonable to assume that some form of sanctions could be put in place?

It's a badge, no more. Any sanctions are left for other nations and regions to hand out.

So if a Condemn proposal is effectively a waste of time - why have them?

It would seem that the only time the SC is worth bothering with is for Liberation proposals.

Now if the economies of the nations were affected in a Condemned region then maybe they would have more purpose - the inhabitants might be inclined to remove a delegate that was leading a region towards that and condemned region might find recruiting harder - after all what new region would want to join a region in economic meltdown?

They're not a waste of time - they're a chance for NSers to take a moral stance on happenings in NationStates. They're there to show disapproval of actions - and if other effects were to be added, they'd become more about whether it's appropriate to impose those effects, than whether the nominee is worthy of disapproval.

That said, I wouldn't mind seeing a sanctions/embargo proposal category, to impact on the economy of the nominee, but I don't think it'd be a priority.

Logically, sanctions should follow on from a condemnation, to encourage the region to mend its ways so to speak, and desist from the behaviour that led to the condemnation in the first place.

I am not a code monkey but surely a command line could be written along the lines of "IF RegionStatus is "Condemned" Then EcONOMY = 90%"or whatever would be required to reduce the stats - am sure that the region field is part of the nations stats else how else would the XML feeds work?

As to the morality of collectively punishing a whole region, I would argue that if the actions of a small minority of their members has bought about the condemnation in the first place, it is in the majorities own interests to distance themselves from the culprits, ideally by organising and removing them voluntarily.

It is evident that the permissions are in place to remove passwords & enable Delegate controls, else the Liberation Resolutions would not work.

The same Liberation Resolutions also set the precedence for direct intervention in a region - why should it only be applied to victims regions and not perpertrator ones?

One consideration of affecting the stats is that it would also have an impact on the nations that play no active part in the region by directly affecting their RP abilities, thus they wold not be able to abdicate responsibility for their region
