Nationstates: NationStates is a multiplayer government simulation browser game created and developed by Max Barry. Based loosely on Barry's novel Jennifer Government, the game was publicly released on 13 November 2002 with the site originally founded as an independent vehicle publicizing the novel one week before its release.
Nationstates’ Forums: The official forums for the Nationstates.net website, serves as another medium of communication between players. Is also referred simply as The Forums.
General:
Nation: An account created by a player via the nation creation page. Nations serve as the accounts for the players, allowing them to play the government simulation and communicate with others on the site. It represents as the fictional nation that the player has created.
Puppet Nation: A nation crated by a player to serve as an alternative or extra nation that they can have.
Population (Pop): The total number of citizens within a nation.
Customizable Fields: The things that can be changed by the player about their nation such as their flag, currency, mottos etc.
National Flag: The (smaller) image that appears on a nation’s homepage. It is a nation’s official flag. It can be changed via settings.
National Banner: The (larger) image that appears on a nation’s homepage, it takes up a large chunk of the top screen. It can be changed via settings.
National Currency: The text that appears on the homepage next to “currency”. It is a nation’s official currency. It can be changed via settings.
National Animal: The text that appears on the homepage next to “animal”. It is a nation’s official national animal. It can be changed via settings.
National Motto: The text that appears on the homepage under quotation marks. It is a nation’s official motto. It can be changed via settings.
Classification: The text that appears before the nation’s name, it serves as an official pretitle for a nation.
National Capital: The text that appears on the homepage next to “capital”. It is a nation’s official capital. It can be changed via settings. Can be accessed at 250 million population.
National Leader: The text that appears on the homepage next to “leader”. It is a nation’s official leader. It can be changed via settings. Can be accessed at 500 million population.
National Faith (Religion): The text that appears on the homepage next to “faith”. It is a nation’s official faith/religion. It can be changed via settings. Can be accessed at 1 billion population.
Policy: A policy is a law that a nation will follow. These serve as the in-game way to enforce rules and regulations, as well as granting rights and freedoms to a nation. They can be changed by answering issues. Policies can be viewed on the policies page.
Issue: One of the game’s core mechanics. An issue is a dilemma that a nation is faced with. Giving the player a problem with several pre-set solutions. It serves as a way to change a nation’s characteristics. It represents how the fictional government would respond to that situation. Issues can be found in the issues page of your nation.
Telegram (TG): A private way to message another nation. A telegram (or TG for short) is similar to a direct message, as it allows for communication between two or more parties without having the message be trackable besides those who received it. These can be viewed on the telegram page.
Dossier: A nation’s collection of intelligence on other nations and regions. It provides a way to view nations or regions. This can be accessed on the dossier page.
Factbook: The place that holds a nation’s dispatches.
Dispatch: A dispatch is a statement issued by a nation. Types of dispatch include Factbooks, which officially describe a nation in their own words, Bulletins, which address gameplay, and Accounts, which are articles or stories involving a nation's people. Dispatches may be edited later or deleted.
Nationstates World Census Ranking (Stats or Trophies): Statics about a nation, determined by how they choose to solve issues. They can be viewed on the rank page. (The one with the big trophy icon.
Regions:
Region: An area where nations can be located at. Regions serve as a place for other nations to exist and communicate with each other via the Regional Message Board.
User Created Region (UCR): A region created by a nation. It does not have nations naturally spawn in it. It can convert into a frontier.
Feeder Region: A region created by the game. Has nations that naturally spawn within it.
Frontier Region: A region created by a nation. Has nations that naturally spawn within it. It can be converted into a User Created Region.
Catcher Region: A region that hosts nations that are ejected out of another region.
Restorer Region: A region that hosts nations that have recently been revived from Ceasing to Exist.
Sinker Region: Refers to both the catcher and restorer regions.
Warzone Region: A region that cannot permanently ban or password lock the region.
Founder: A nation that founded a region.
Governor: The nation currently in charge of a region. Having the ability to hold a certain degree of control and power over a region.
Successor: The nation appointed by the governor of a region. They will take power if the governor was to disappear from the region or the governor is to abdicate.
Delegate: The nation with the most endorsements from within a region.
Regional Officer: A nation appointed with powers in a region.
Regional Message Board (RMB): A place where nations can communicate with each other. Each region has its own Regional Message Board, usually having different rules about what can be posted there and what cannot. Nations can post, like, and quote other comments on the board.
Suppression: A post on a regional message board being hidden with a block covering it up.
Suppressing: The act of a Regional Officer/Governor/Delegate suppressing a post.
Eject: For a nation to be moved from a region to a catcher region.
Ban: For a nation to not be allowed back into the region.
Banjection: The act of ejecting and banning someone from a region.
Password Lock: A region having a password added so only people that know the password can join.
Influence: The amount of power a nation holds in the region. It takes influence to eject, ban, and password lock a region.
World Factbook Entry: A region’s description of itself, viewable on its homepage.
Embassy: A mutual agreement between two regions that (generally) allows nations from both sides to post on each others regional message boards.
Tag: A category that a region can add to itself (or be added in by the game) to help players understand basic information about the region, such as them being pro or anti democratic, pro or anti World Assembly, etc.
The Pacific (TP): The first feeder region established.
The North Pacific (TNP): The second feeder region established.
The East Pacific (TEP): The third feeder region established.
The South Pacific (TSP): The fourth feeder region established.
The West Pacific (TWP): The fifth feeder region established.
The Rejected Realms (TRR): The first catcher region established.
Lazarus: The first restorer region established.
Balder: The second restorer region established, along with Osiris.
Osiris: The second restorer region established, along with Balder.
(Raid/Defense:)
“The Invasion Game” (Raid & Defense | R/D:) A gameplay mechanic where raiders attempt to seize the delegacy of a region, and defenders trying to stop this.
Raid: The act of a group of nations (all in the World Assembly) attempting to get one of their members as the delegate, by endorsing them so that they will have the most endorsements in a region. This will usually give the raiders power over the region.
Tag Raid: A type of raiding involving raiders changing a regions customizable fields.
Coup: The act of raiders infiltrating a region’s political system or using their current position in said region in order to gain control.
Raider (Invaders): A nation that participates in a raid.
Defender: A nation trying to prevent a raider from succeeding in their goal of taking the delegate position. Or trying to reclaim the delegate position to the region’s original governing authority.
Siege: The event of both raiders and defenders fighting for control over a region after is has been taken over by raiders.
Occupation: The act of a group of raiders holding the delegate position in a region for a indefinite amount of time.
Liberation: The act of defenders attempting to take back the region from raiders and give the delegate position back to the original people in the region.
Update: When a region refreshes and checks which nation in the region has the most endorsements, then giving the nation the role of delegate. If the nation was already the delegate and still has the most endorsements, they get to keep the position.
Jump Point: A region in which nations participating in the R/D will move their nation to in order to be ready to move into a region (Usually right before an update).
Piling: The act of a nation moving into a region to endorse another nation before it’s close to an update.
Detag: The act of a region’s authorities removing and changing tags and other customizable fields such as flags and the World Factbook Entry that have been changed by previous authorities. (Usually defenders after taking back a region from raiders).
Cards:
Trading Card: Collectible items that are trading card versions of nations. They can be collected by answering issues. They can be viewed on the card deck page.
Card Deck: A place where a nation’s trading cards are kept.
Trading Card Marketplace: A place where nation’s can buy and sell trading cards.
Bank: A collection of a nation’s amount of (fake, not real) money earned through trading cards.
Money: The currency system used for trading cards.
Junk: The act of removing a card from a nation’s inventory in exchange for some money add to the nation’s bank.
Sell: A nation selling a card to another nation in exchange for money.
Bid: A nation placing a bet on a card using money in order to buy it.
Gift: A nation gifting a trading card to another nation.
Auction: A process in which nations are allowed to bet on a card in order to obtain it.
Rarity: The rareness of a trading card.
Season: The date on which a card was produced.
Season 1 (S1): Cards produced on April 1, 2018
Season 2 (S2): Cards produced on November 28, 2019
Season 3 (S3): Cards produced on November 12, 2022
World Assembly:
World Assembly (WA): It is the fictional Nationstates Multiverse’s governing body. The WA is in charge of drafting legislation that will affect it’s member states. It is in responsible for a lot of the in-game canon and story.
World Assembly Member: A nation who is a member of the World Assembly.
Endorsement (Endo): A badge that a nation can receive or give to another nation. Nations with more endorsements will have more influence.
Endorsement Cap (Endo Cap): The amount of endorsements regional authorities will allow you to have.
General Assembly (GA): The oldest Council of the World Assembly, the General Assembly concerns itself with international law. Its resolutions are applied immediately upon passing in all WA member nations.
Security Council (SC): The Security Council recognizes and responds to individual nations and regions, with the aim of ensuring global harmony. It essentially services as the “Judgement” committee.
Proposal: A proposal either in the General Assembly or Security Council that is trying to become a resolution.
Resolution: Legislation that is officially recognized by World Assembly and it’s members.
Commend: A SC resolution that aims to praise a nation or region.
Condemn: A SC resolution that aims to shame a nation or region.
Injuction: A SC resolution that would prevent a region from transferring into a frontier region, or vise versa.
Liberation (WA): A SC resolution that would remove regional imposed barriers to liberate a region.
Approval: A point given to a World Assembly proposal by a regional delegate. World Assembly proposals need a certain amount of approvals in order to enter the voting stage to become a resolution.
Quorum: The amount of approvals a World Assembly proposal needs to enter the voting stage.
Voting Stage: The stage of a World Assembly proposal in which after reaching the approval quorum is sent out to be voted on rather it should be passed or not by the members of the World Assembly.
General Assembly Secretariat (GenSec): A panel of nations who judge the legality of WA General Assembly proposals.
General Assembly Secretariat Member (GenSec Members): A nations in GenSec that votes to indicate whether they believe a proposal’s status.
Status: The legality of a World Assembly proposal.
Legal: A proposal that complies with World Assembly’s rules.
Illegal: A proposal that violates one or more World Assembly’s rules.
Discarded: A proposal that blatantly violates one or more rules and is not worthy of the General Assembly's attention.
Forums:
Factbooks and National Information (F&NI): A forum to put national factbooks, embassy exchanges, and other information regarding the nations of the world. [In character forum]
NationStates: A forum where nations come together and discuss matters of varying degrees of importance. [In character forum]
International Incidents (II): A forum that serves as a staging-point for declarations of war and other major diplomatic events. [In character forum]
Global Economics and Trade (GE&T): A forum where national storefronts can tout their wares and discuss trade. [In character forum]
NS Sports (NSS): A forum where nations across the world can engage in international sports. [In character forum]
General Assembly Forum (GAF): A forum dedicated to the discussion of the General Assembly and their proposals.
Security Council Forum (SCF): A forum dedicated to the discussion of the Security Council and their proposals.
WA Archives (WAA): A forum of carefully preserved records of the most notable World Assembly debates.
Gameplay Forum (GMF): A forum to talk about regional management and politics, raider/defender gameplay, and other game-related matters. Not a roleplaying forum.
Got Issues? (GI): A forum to spoil daily issues for those who haven't had them yet, snigger at typos, and discuss ideas for new ones.
Technical Forum (TF): A forum for bug reports, general help, ideas for improvements, and questions about how things are meant to work.
Moderation Forum (MF): A forum for reporting forum-related incidents to moderation, and learning more about the moderation team and the rules.
General Forum (GNF): A forum for discussion and debate about anything. (Not a roleplay related forum; out-of-character commentary only.)
Arts & Fiction (A&F): A forum for those who like to discuss art, music, books, movies, TV, and each other's own works.
Portal to the Multiverse (PttM): A forum for all of the non-NationStates related roleplaying needs.
Forum 7 (F7): A forum to relax, unwind, share a joke, and generally goof off.
Trading Cards Forum (TCF): A forum to discuss about Trading Cards.
Archives Forum (AF): A resting-place for threads that might have otherwise been lost.
Events:
Nuke Day (N-Day): Refers to an in-game event where nations are allowed to join factions, and fire nukes upon other nations, as well as creating shields to protect themselves and other members in their group. The goal of the event is to get the most damage (radiation) inflicted onto others, while having the minimum amount of damage to you and other members in the faction you joined.
Zombie Day (Z-Day): Refers to an in-game event where infected zombies are risen from the grave, and are trying to infect the world. Nations have the choice to kill the zombies, cure the infected and turn them back into humans, or embrace the zombies and spread the disease. This is done by nations exchanging missiles, bio-weapons, and cure bombs to ultimately fight for their cause.
Global Trade Fair (GTF): Refers in an in-game event where nations attempt to collect different items and stash them in their region. This is done by getting them naturally, or stealing them. The goal of the event is to earn your region the most amount of points by stashing them in a region.
Meta:
In-Character (IC): A nation that is posting/acting within the context of a roleplay that they are engaging with.
Out-of-Character (OOC): A nation that is posting/acting not from within a roleplay context, and is posting their nonfictional thoughts and ideas.
Open: The act of a roleplay allowing other nations to join.
Closed: The act of a roleplay not allowing other nations (other than the nations that the original poster allows) to join.
Modern Technology (MT): The context of a roleplay taking place within a modern day setting, with modern day technology.
Pre-Modern Technology (PRMT/PMT): The context of a roleplay taking place within a pre modern day setting, with pre modern day technology. Technology and society being less advanced than it is today.
Post-Modern Technology (POMT/PMT): The context of a roleplay taking place within a post modern day setting, with post modern day technology. Technology and society being a little more advanced than it is today.
Future Technology (FT): The context of a roleplay taking place within a futuristic setting, with futuristic technology. Technology and society being way more advanced than it is today.
Above Nation (AN): Refers to the nation that posted before you, typically refers to the nation on a forum thread.
Your Nation (YN): Refers to your nation, typically referring to your nation on a forum thread.
Below Nation (BN): Refers to the nation that posted after you, typically refers to the nation on a forum thread.
Above Leader (AL): Refers to a nation’s leader, specifically referring to the leader of the nation that posted before you, typically on a forum thread.
Your Leader (YL): Refers to your nation’s leader, typically used to describe your leader on a forum thread.
Below Leader (BL): Refers to a nation’s leader, specifically referring to the leader of the nation that posted after you, typically on a forum thread.
Ninja'd (/Ninja’d): Having a nation post something right before another nation was going to post something.
Still Me (/Stillme): Refers to a nation proclaiming that the nation of attention (such as in a forum 7 game) is still on them, and not the nation’s that posted above and/or below.
Bump (/Bump): A post made by a nation to put a forum thread onto the latest forum topics.
Moderator: A site wide force tasked with removing rule breakers. (AKA the people you shouldn’t mess with.)
One-Stop Rule Shop (OSRS): Nationstates.net official website rules. It can be viewed here.
Getting Help Request (GHR): A way to request moderator intervention on rule breaking posts and content. It can be viewed here.
Deleted Nation (DEAT | Modbomb | GORT): A nation that has been removed by the moderation team.
Delete on Sight (DoS): A player that has been banned from the site.
Cease to Exist (CtE): When a nation becomes inactive for so long, the nation gets removed from the game. The nation can be recovered.
Shop: A shop where perks can be bought using real money to help support the site. It can be viewed here.
Site Supporter: People who have bought the “Support” or a plan that includes the Support role in the shop. These are the most based nations in the game.
