10000 Islands, the Rejected Realms, the South Pacific, Spiritus, and the Union of Democratic States are proud to jointly announce the Aegis Accords, a multilateral mutual defense treaty based upon our longtime and shared defender values. With the treaty now in effect, the Aegis enhances the security of all its member regions and provides a framework for a stronger and more united defender world. Since ratification, these members have been joined by The League, The Order of the Grey Wardens, and Europeia.

For years, we have been an informal alliance brought together through various bilateral treaties amongst eachother. It was only last year that we came together for the Security Council bloc that is the Partnership for Sovereignty, of which we are all members. But today, we have taken an additional step forward to establish a formal military alliance between longtime friends and allies – a bond that cannot be severed so easily – who share a common cause.

This treaty owes its name to a shield mentioned in Homer's Iliad that was wielded by the goddess Athena and her father Zeus. Carried by the goddess of war, a defender of freedom, the aegis serves as an apt representation of our alliance and what we stand for. We are the aegis for peace and freedom throughout NationStates, and we will defend against any threat that comes our way.

Good luck to this alliance. I hope they show themselves as a strong and well co-ordinated front with not reckless, but assertive collective leadership especially within the state we find ourselves in R/D these past months. I am also curious to see how y’all shall put your name out there from an FA influence perspective!

Congrats to all of the regions involved! I imagine that it took a lot of work to get this off the ground, and I'm excited to see where Aegis goes

Happy to finally have this announced, really glad to have gotten to this point after so many years of coordination and teamwork. To have something formalized like this is a big step forward for all regions involved and hopefully proves to be an even larger step forward to the defender cause.

Serious: Libcord exists. Is Aegis supposed to be a replacement or a challenger? What does membership of Aegis offer that participation in Libcord cannot - or does not?

At the very least, a more binding layer of protection through the treaty. One notable result of Aegis is that UDS and TRR are now treaty allies, for example. Which, while the UDSAF and the RRA often cooperate in Libcord, is a substantial difference from that cooperation.

I don't think it can be categorized as either a replacement or challenger one's an all-defender military venue, the other's a treaty

Other than what Minskiev has said, I can't help but think I've heard this joke before. For real though, the Aegis provides a formalized relationship between allied defenders and sets up a rules-based order that was unwritten before now.

I see that your snide remarks that fall just short of base humor have not changed, lovely to see Tin

But in essence, as Minkskiev put pretty plainly, there is certainly no reason to assume Aegis is a replacement or a challenger in any form to Libcord. If it were ever intended to be that TGW and The League would most certainly have also been early signatories as well. This is much more a representation of combined regional cooperation & friendship between the signatories than a way to challenge other parties and defender organizations.

You guys have been putting quite the effort into this. And I see this working out really well. Wish the alliance the best of luck.

Interesting. This was not sold to South Pacificans as a military alliance.

10000 Islands ended its war against LWU some time ago. Even if they had not, Aegis does not obligate a region to support another in its war effort, only to defend that region if it is attacked.

I'm admittedly mildly surprised not to see either on the document, considering modern defending practically hinges on the former. For a document with a focus on creating a "stronger and more united defender world", this noticeably excludes the strongest region of the defender world.

The actual text seems like a strange mix of an ideological manifesto and military and intelligence clauses, with any diplomatic or cultural mentions being footnotes at best. "An alliance with a military cooperation and mutual defense component" fits less well than military alliance, I'd say. Though it's strange to me that South Pacificans would somehow miss what the Accords would actually do or aim to accomplish, if they feel misled as Roavin's post seems to imply.

The Aegis is proud to announce the successful execution of a joint military operation spanning both the major and minor updates of July 16. On the occasion of the Aegis Accords’ signing, the alliance came together to hone our military capabilities as one. Under the new Aegis banner, our militaries united to detag 342 regions over two updates thanks to a valiant joint effort. In total, 15 military personnel from four regional militaries participated.

Very pleased to see a new institution rise in the name of global peace and goodwill. I like the flag too, a bit Milograd-esque in a good way!
