LAST MINUTE ENTRY THAT IS REALLY REALLY BAD

Postby FiHami » Mon Jun 29, 2020 5:56 pm

Topic Title: Phoenix's Entry

Name of Candidate: Phoenix (FiHami)
Name of Entry: Hear our Thunder
Inspiration/Description of Entry: Sorry it's so bad and sloppy D:

As for inspiration, I kinda just suddenly got the idea to jump in and do a thing and uh did it, computer crashed and I lost the files, and then I re-recorded everything as quickly as I could today and so it's REALLY REALLY sloppy and such but I had fun doing it and uh next year I'll definitely have something way better D:

Entry: https://soundcloud.com/phoenix-lowe-441 ... he-thunder

LYRICS: You'll hear the Thunder

V1:
The Early morning
when they are waking
we are out here
we're prepping puppets

The sound ferocious
just like a lion
when they hear our call
they know they have to run

The clock is running
another endo
yet we still have advantage
we got the thunder

we are watching
we are waiting
frantic keyboard smashes
oh my gosh why do y'all take so long

Pre-Chorus:
triggers so tight and
refreshing at the speed
of light, we take the win
and you take the L

Chorus:
Keyboard warriors, we stay up and fight
frantic keyboard smashing
there's no way we'll lose
the roaring rumble of our
collective freedom call
that's the sound of victory
in a few seconds flat

Tag:
Woah, woah, woah, you'll hear our thunder

V2:
It's growing late
we're getting bored
we're beating them all in
before they even jump

defender prowess
we're showing our stripes
these wins are a breeze
and these L's are for lag!

(Prechorus, chorus, and tag to end)

Why should you win?

I shouldn't win at all heh.

Do you want this song to be flagged as non-competing (e.g. will not be judged as a regional entry) Choosing this is only advisable if your region has already submitted a song.

Eh might as well compete, why not?

RaiderVision has ended. Thank you to everyone who submitted an entry, and everyone who stopped by to listen to all of the entries, as well as the amazing people who performed live in our karaoke event after the song showcase. I think we learned a lot from this year's event and can come up with some ways to expand it in the years to come, it would be really cool and a lot of you are far more musically gifted than I realized.

This was the 5th year this competition has been done, and there was a record number of entries. On top of that, they were some of the best entries RaiderVision has seen yet, and it was very difficult for the competitors and the regional representatives to pick a winner. Even so, they managed the task. These results were independently certified by myself and Jakker, and we agreed that our counts matched and were accurate. All voters were shown these results, which were tabulated after each voter submitted their votes privately to the organizers, to ensure that no one would be influenced by how the votes were going. One of our competitors suggested we encourage the voters to include notes for why they voted the way they did and offer feedback, and that was an excellent idea. Many of the voters did just that, so I would also like to share some of those thoughts as we announce the results. I will also be including the point values each entry received, and you will see just how fierce (and close) this year's competition was.

The third place finisher surprised a lot of people, including I'm sure the person who submitted it. It was called "legitimately hilarious and quite well done considering (multi tracked vocals with effects and everything)" and "cocky and playful." The singer was praised as well, both because many people didn't think they could sing, and because of the bravery in performing this particular song. As one voter put it, "I would die before I tried to rap and put it on the internet, so big props for pulling that off." The lyrics were all praised for fitting the song and for their creativity, and across the board those who rated it higher really enjoyed listening to it, considering remarks like "I couldn't believe what I was hearing lol." The presentation, then, may be where this entry fell short. As one voter said, "I can believe that it only took you an afternoon to throw together...With a little more polish, this would be up there with Grey Wardens," a thought that was echoed by another who asserted that "next year we'll give him a quick tutorial on processing vocals and he'll be unbeatable ;P" which I got to say, I totally believe. If this is what can be done on such short notice, imagine what a little more time and practice can bring.

Congratulations to Numero, whose entry "Ursibae" won 2020's Quarter Note Award, with 128 points!

The second place finisher came to win, and very nearly succeeded. As one voter put it, "In any other year it could’ve easily won." Voters praised the "amazing" collaboration, the "perfect" song choice for the subject matter, the "shockingly high production value" (with particular love to the "cherry on top" lyric video that accompanied it, particularly its logo thumping to the music), the "lovely lyrics" which were also "both true to the tone of the original song" and "a complete re-write," and the "hustle" with which it was made. It was called "genius" and the word "masterpiece" was thrown around more than once. The highest praise in my opinion is what one voter said: "I can tell this is going to be played over and over through the years." That is absolutely correct. I also want to echo the thoughts of one voter who said "a grunge rock version of Ghostbusters wasn't something I knew I needed till I heard it." Amen.

Big congratulations to Roavin, whose entry "Grey Wardens" won 2020's Half Note Award, with 140 points!

Finally, there's our first place finisher. Based on the feedback we received, the reason this entry stood out and managed to clinch the win this year was largely due to the talent of the singer. He was praised for his "fantastic" singing that was deemed "the best out of all contestants" and "the most outstanding song by voice alone." It was said that he "set the bar very high" and from there the "well crafted" lyrics received accolades ranging from the beautiful diction to their satirical nature. In terms of construction, many voters appreciated how it perfectly matched the style and theme that the creator was going for, so much that those who did dock points from it tended to do so because it lacked the oomph that other songs like our second and third place finishers had. That was exactly the right speed for this song, however, which made it a perfect package of singing and presentation. The best praise was probably the fact that one can "totally imagine this being the theme song of XKI."

A big round of applause to COE, whose entry "Hymn of the Tireless Detagger" won 2020's Whole Note Award and this year's competition, with 144 points!

Roavin, however, won the people's heart by a landslide and is the winner of 2020's Moves Like Jakker Award!

I want to take a moment to thank the other competitors for stepping up and participating. Your creativity and effort did not go unnoticed, and I hope the feedback you received was helpful and can be used to fuel your next entry in this competition, because we don't want this to be the last we see of you!

The full rankings were:

"Hymn of the Tireless" Detagger (COE): 144
"Grey Wardens" (Roavin): 140
"Ursibae" (Numero): 128
"The Devi Went Down to Update" (Mira): 98
"Hear our Thunder" (Phoenix): 74
"Burning Regions" (Refuge): 56
"Dear Mr Delegate" (McMasterdonia): 26
"Fenda. Aw man" (Holor): 14

I want to say that TNP had a lot of fun hosting this year and getting to know the musical talents of the raidersphere. We hope everyone had fun attending the live events and enjoyed the submissions, and I sincerely hope you come back next year so it can be even bigger and better than it was this year. Let's break more records and hear more voices, and if you couldn't submit this year or couldn't bring yourself to, make next year the one where you finally take the plunge.

Disappointing ending, considering that it's blatantly obvious that some voters left Roavin's entry off their ballot despite it being the objectively best quality song in terms of overall song mixing.

Congrats to COE, even if he did win due to piss poor IC attitudes in an OOC contest.

I've listened to Grey Wardens a few too many times, when Ghostbusters came on the radio this morning I was momentarily confused why it wasn't Grey Wardens!

A bit surprised it didn't win but the top three were all fantastic in their own right :)

This

And... Literally who cares, Tim? They're both great songs, what does it matter which got more fancy internet points?

Roavin's song is a banger - the entire point of RaiderVision is making music.
Roavin's song getting 0 still would not have changed that everyone on GP is adding it to their playlists.

The scoring is beside the point, and you probably should learn to enjoy these events for more than scoring them.

This was a pleasant surprise! No lie, I thought I was competing for second place after I heard "Grey Wardens". I'm thrilled that so many found my entry funny and entertaining, and I'm flattered by the feedback on my singing voice. I don't consider myself to have a naturally good voice, so I put a lot of effort into warming up and do multiple takes until I'm satisfied with the sound. I'm glad that seems to be paying off :)

Tim, what the fuck man? How are you gonna bring salt into this thread of all threads?

People who don't agree with the result are voicing their opinions? Oh no what shall we do!?!?!?!?!

Purely out of interest, can we have a breakdown of how many TBH members put COE first?

It is fair and valid if some are upset about the results. I hear you. With that said, I would prefer that this does not get too much into focusing on the voters or trying to place blame.

I will indulge your question though. Of the 17 voters, six of them are current Hawks (4 submitted songs and two were representatives for other regions). Of those six, five could have voted for COE's entry (he could not) and only 1 placed his as first. Of the six that could have voted for Roacin, 3 placed his first.

We did everything we could to limit possible influences with private ballots and cross-checking. I cannot say for sure why everyone voted the way they did. It could be related to the content of the song, the singing voice, the song's beat, the flow of the lyrics, etc. It is always possible for some bias to exist in the voting like any kind of voting. But it does not benefit TBH to try and push or hope for a specific winner.

In fact, I was personally rooting for another entry to win simply because there is a lot of gain when other regions are involved in the planning and advertisement of this event. With these results, I hope that there will be some work to try and expand the hosting for next year beyond TBH.

All of that is to say, we had some really great entries and the top three received a lot of votes as was deserved. Other entries beyond COE's and Roavin's received first and second place votes. The level of competition played a role as well into the results. From my interactions with the voters, they worked hard to listen to the songs and give their assessment to the best of their abilities.

At the end of the day, if anyone would like a say in the voting, the main step is to submit a song for competition. There is also the opportunity to serve as a regional representative. The more diversity in the entries and voters the better, so I would strongly encourage as many people as possible to participate in the process next year. This year likely had the most robust quality of songs ever and let's make next year even better!

I think it's fine to disagree with the results. Certainly the results don't match my own personal rankings. But I definitely don't appreciate Tim's implication that I didn't win on the merits of my entry, especially when there's no basis to make that claim. It's a hurtful thing to say, and uncalled for.
