Do you support the use of puppets?

Postby Skundi » Wed Oct 23, 2019 9:51 am

So having been on this site for a year and a half, I’ve come across many nations and their puppets, and after encountering a lot of them, I was wondering what the nations think. So what do you think?

Personally for me, I found that getting to grips to the game was made easier with puppets. Having founded my region almost straight after I was founded, meant that I was heading into proper unknown territory. I found it quite nice then, to head round to other regions and see how it was run. Puppets have provided me with extra knowledge of the site.

Despite this, I’ve heard of the dangers of puppets, eg. voter fraud, trolling etc. etc. so I do have a little bit of doubt that puppets are good. But enough of what I think, do you like puppets?

I think puppets are good. Being in a new region is always nice, because you get to see how other regions are run without moving your main one. I tend to use puppets for RP though. One of my puppets was made to be the arch nemesis to my main, and another puppet was made so that I could RP the collapse of a nation.

Puppets aren't so great when used en mass to farm cards though. A few puppets for farming is fine in my opinion. They also aren't great when used to break rules, obviously.

Yes.
At one stage I had over 180 puppets, of varying natures and in varying regions, to enjoy: There are somewhat fewer of them now, admittedly, but each of those has its own reason for continued existence.
The Confrederated Clans (and other Confrederated Bodys) of the Free Bears of Bears Armed
(includes The Ursine NorthLands) Demonym = Bear[s]; adjective = ‘Urrsish’.
Population = just under 20 million. Economy = only Thriving. Average Life expectancy = c.60 years. If the nation is classified as 'Anarchy' there still is a [strictly limited] national government... and those aren't "biker gangs", they're traditional cross-Clan 'Warrior Societies', generally respected rather than feared.

There are some good aspects that come from puppets, and some bad aspects.

They're great for roleplaying (alone, or as a group of nations or characters), and also for seeing how nations develop when acting according to different principles.
I object to people making no-effort puppet accounts with no roleplaying or aesthetic value. It's sad to see people using puppet accounts to funnel funds into their main accounts to monopolize valuable cards, or using them to hijack regions. It's up to the staff to discourage that.

Anyone who really gets into this game will have a good number of puppets. Lots of use and need, from using them in NS mini games like N-day and Z-day, to the Raiding/defender elements, to just being able to be in many regions at once building influence.

It's not a question of good or bad, more a question of level of involvement in NS.

I currently own two main nations and 27 puppets, all of them exhibited in [region]Ghost Land Government Type Museum[/nation], and I actually like being allowed as many nations as I want as it allows me to test out different ideologies, scenarios, etc. without altering the theme of my main nation every month. Plus, coming up with cool flags, capitals, etc. is part of the fun! Yes, there are WA cheaters, vote stackers, and ban evaders, but that would happen regardless of whether puppets were "allowed".

Back when I was more active last summer, I sent out a few to other regions to poke around while my mains continued to sit in TEP.

Puppets are useful to communicate across regions. Also for the case if your main nation got defamed (not deleted) but you still want to return under a new identity.

This nation is technically a puppet, while the main nation had been the ideal nation, it was defamed to the ground so I don’t identify with it anymore.

For me one of the best aspects of Nationstates is that you can have unlimited nations. I use puppets for a multitude of reasons in a multitude of ways and yes I do have quite a few.

The maintenance can be rather time-consuming and monotonous but for me it’s worth it.

I have about 20 or so puppet nations. I'm trying to build sort of a mirror version of the IRL world in my region. It's tricky to maintain them (as well as write individual dispatches/newspapers) but it's quite enjoyable and fun

BTW this is one of them. My main nation is Chechenastan. Quite possibly the world's most perfected socialist state
