How has your nation changed overtime?

Postby Rovikstead » Thu Jun 06, 2019 6:05 pm

Hey guys. I've recently returned from a long hiatus from the forums. One of my biggest goals coming back to the forums is to get back on track with roleplaying and worldbuilding for my nation. I'm hoping to turn it into something fun and original, and a far cry from my rather poor attempts in the past to make a medieval nation. But thinking about the contrast between what I've done to shape my nation in the past and what I plan to do looking forward, I'm interested in seeing how other people's nations have changed overtime their plans on how their nations will look like in the future, whether it be dramatic change or very little at all. So with that, I'd love to ask everyone how your nations have changed overtime. What were they like in the beginning, and what changes have they undergone since then? Have there been any dramatic changes, like wiping the slate clean and making something completely different from what it once was? And if you have any, what are your plans for how you will continue to shape your nation in the future?

Personally, my nation has undergone a lot of change as I've decided to switch things up a bit throughout the almost three years I've been on here. My nation began as a boring kingdom with very little that gave it character or novelty. Then, it turned out to be a rather poor recreation of barbarian society set in a high fantasy setting. Believe me, it was very cringy and I've had half a thought to remove the posts I've made about it because of that fact. Then, it lost all character entirely because I became absorbed in WA politics, only rarely going back to my cringy barbarian roots when acting "in-character" (I was pretty bad at getting in-character, and still am) to express my views in the WA. But now, inspired by nerdy past-times like DnD and Skyrim, I've decided to create a medieval fantasy society with far more depth and creativity. So over these next few weeks, I'll try to create a unique lore and society for my nation that is hopefully less cringy than my barbarian society, and can open myself up for some compelling storytelling and RP. Although my plans are bound to change, I'm thinking about making a elven society founded by the tribe known as the Lumottu, powerful high elves endowed or perhaps cursed with limitless magic at their fingertips. They were feared by elven society because of the Lumottu's destructive capacity, and forced to flee where they established their safe haven of Rovikstead. So Rovikstead will be a magical elven society with a rich history and culture. Hearts hardened by their alienation from normal elven society, Rovikstead's people are very xenophobic, and although only a fraction of the Lumottu's descendants have inherited the Lumottu's power, Rovikstead has also acquired a sense of ethnocentrism as well.

Two years ago, in 2017, when I started playing NationStates, I decided to make a nation with a democratic government and a royal family overseeing it. The nation would be a small space-fairing nation, and it would only have future tech standards. The factbooks back then were incredibly crappy as well. They had no pictures, just long paragraphs of explanations, which I knew the readers would find boring.

In 2017 Q3 (3rd quarter), because I had an overwhelming desire for dominance and power, I couldn’t help control my urge to make Bluelight the ridiculously overpowered nation I have now. It was fun, thinking up of new and weird gadgets. Sometimes, I couldn’t explain how they could be made without breaking any laws, so I decided to incorporate magic in 2017 Q4 to the nation to patch holes in the technology I can’t explain. Thus I became a fantasy tech nation.

In 2018 Q2, I decided to revamp the entire factbook layout into a Wiki format. Not all, though. Some of them were too informal that they could be Wikipedias themselves. That’s how I thought up of the idea to have a formal Lightian Wikipedia, and an informal one. In 2018 Q4, I [suddenly] got the idea of a benevolent dictatorship, which was literally staring at my face. So I abolished the democratic government, and replaced it with a small governing body for the leader to oversee. After all, it would be, in my opinion, nonsensical for one man to control all the subjects of a nation bigger than existence ever known.

In the World Assembly, from 2017 to 2019, my interest of answering appeals and repeals have decreased. Even though I’m in there, I don’t feel like doing anything. Thus I gave up my World Assembly Delegate position over half a year ago.

That’s all I can say, if you’re curious.

That sounds very interesting and I love the idea of a mix between a sci fi and magic nation. What were some sources of inspiration for your nation?

It hasn't changed that much I would say. I've adopted a more pragmatic approach to technology though; we are in a sort of interbellum 'Mapp and Lucia'-cum-'Jeeves and Wooster' period but set in the modern day, whereas I used to be strictly late Victorian. GN has also become a bit less socialist with manoralism rising to take its place.

This nation is an exaggerated representation of my personal views in most areas.

My nation hasn't existed for longer than a year and almost two months - yet, it has undergone a couple of major changes ever since.
One can easily imagine April/May 2018 Lillorainen as a sort of benevolent dictatorship - a rather autocratic government, which, however, granted its citizens an extreme lot of personal freedom with almost no restrictions on anything (drugs, guns, and so on). Politically, the Federation used to be more of a confederacy, with the central government (despite being autocratic) only playing a minor role and the states doing it all - said states were even more like their own nation-states with hardly anything in common when it came to language and culture. Imagine an archipelago of nine little anarchies forged together by the father who knows best.
One may have to add, that initially, Lillorainen was based on former roleplays I did, and supposed to be more satirical.
Over the time, I added some democratic elements into it, but left it as a one-party state; I developed the ideology of the Federative National Meritocracy as a result of ancient philosophical foundations it is based on. People still have a lot of personal freedom, but it's kept at a reasonable and realistic level. Norse paganism, a faith I've always been interested in learning about (but don't follow in RL personally, despite even knowing people who do), became the majority religion. The economic system is Social Market Economy - but that hasn't ever changed, for it's been like that from Day 1.
Also, the population grew from 54 to 77 million, the size increased from Denmark's to Sweden's, to become more realistic. This is part of my 'Retcon of Doom', which is still being worked on, including a new factbook, which has yet to be finished due to myself being an incredibly lazy bush-bum very busy. I also wanted the states to fit the regional cultural landscapes - since this would be too heavy of a retcon, I'm just roleplaying it through. And while I still use March 9, 1981, as the official founding and unification date, I added a lot of historical elements which give more of an impression as to how Lillorainen has always felt as an actual, consistent nation with a shared identity that just hasn't happened to be unified prior to this quite recent date, rather than just a bunch of different peoples labeled as a nation as an excuse to run under one flag.
Thus, one can generally say, that my nation has grown more mature over the time. Despite some of these satirical elements still being visible, I now follow a much more serious approach than a year ago. This may also have been influenced by the RPs I've done in that time, and the way my mates from these RPs have influenced my worldbuilding (which I especially noticed with the two other nations I've created since then). More substance, more consistency, more realism - and more fun.
Therefore, Rovikstead, don't ever be afraid of letting your nation undergo major, even essential changes! It can be a long way to shape a nation up to the point one is satisfied with it - and we all get older (shocking, I know) and wiser, so of course, we reconsider things every now and then. And also, don't worry about being bad at getting in-character - no one of us was born as an expert. ^^
Since Lillorainen's geography is currently being overhauled a 'tiny' bit, most information on it posted before December 12, 2018, is not entirely reliable anymore. Until there's a new, proper factfile, everything you might need to know can be found here. Thank you. #RetconOfDoom (Very late update, 2020/08/30 - it's still going on ...)

I don't even know what many of those words mean. This is why I love NationStates so much. The game is different for every player.
