About (1): I'm a hand-drawing artist who extremely very minimally dabbles in digital art, so I don't know if I'm up to the task of creating my own flags, but I'd definitely like to try creating at least one of my own assuming I can find access to the right tools and it proves easy enough; I haven't been too impressed with the couple "flag editors" out there that I was able to find with Google search, but I suspect the lovely people here would be aware of more options. I do what little digital stuff I do on a laptop computer.'

About (2): I'm looking for a flag for this nation (Temosia) that incorporates a Byzantine cross (not to mention I can't copy-paste it myself since most images of it on-line seem to be trademarked or copyrighted for some reason and want me to pay them money to use it... even though it's the recognized religious symbol of Eastern Orthodox Christianity ). You know, the Christian cross with an additional little bar near the top and a diagonal bar near the bottom? To include the Byzantine cross is my only hard criterion; feel free to make the cross extra fancy, or throw some azure colour on the flag somewhere or add in a multi-pointed star or halo or whatever; I dunno! Just go crazy and do what you want.

Here's some background to my fictional island nation's history as of this writing to give you all inspiration to work with:

Temosia is an isle in the Mediterranean Sea that was conquered by the Byzantine Empire and remained a colony of the Empire until its collapse. After the Turkish conquest of Constantinople it was left to its own devices, (kind of like how Carthage was left alone to do what it wanted after Phoenicia collapsed in real life).
The Ottomans tried conquering it, but it was too close to Italy to comfortably take, and Venice and other Italian states were sufficiently swayed to defend it in exchange for various favors. Temosia had a strong local democratic tradition going back to pre-Byzantine times that persisted to some degree even under Byzantine rule, and this reemerged as the dominant form of governance after de-facto independence. Please note that this was Athenian-like majoritarian democracy, so none of that watered-down Enlightenment democracy with individual rights and concerns about mob rule and whatnot. The government is also theocratic in that there's no separation between church and state; the two are interlinked, and the nation takes both religion and democracy very seriously. Members of the clergy even have ceremonial roles both in public events and in the inner workings orchestrated by the country's elected officials. In addition to its obvious Greek influence, the island received heavy Italian influence over the following centuries. Temosia's national religion is technically Catholicism, but it's really an offshoot of Byzantine Christianity in everything but name and surface detail; the local bishops acknowledged the Pope's authority to please Temosia's Catholic neighbors, changed pretty much nothing, and called it a seventh day. Its language is also an off-shoot of Byzantine Greek, having evolved unique characteristics (and influences from Italian) but in general being more conservative than mainland Greek.
Skipping ahead several centuries, prior to WWII the Temosians absorbed a lot of ideas (especially economic ones) from the Fascist Party in Italy (and to a lesser degree in Spain); they didn't like the one-man rule part and the emphasis on secularism, but there's no denying that the modern politics of Temosia is heavily influenced by its ideology. As a result, the modern ideology of Temosia could be said to be a form of "democratic fascism" with strong religious elements; business and society are heavily regulated by the democratic government which, while allowing private enterprise and publicly despising socialism, employs most of the isle by itself and directly funds the Church and the clergy with taxes. In foreign policy, 21st-century Temosia mostly keeps to itself and rarely makes a fuss; its deeply devout populace cares more about what the Pope thinks than what the E.U., U.S., or U.N. does, and as previously mentioned they care at lot more about what the local bishops think than what the Pope thinks. While a minority of native Temosians are invested in foreign affairs, most either think the rest of the world is going to pot or are too busy preparing for their life after death to worry about anything that isn't local. That Temosians democratically elected to limit internet access tells you a lot about its national attitude. It's not a dystopia though; just a quirky nation that is very conservative, deeply proud of its traditions, and pragmatic when it needs to be (due to being accountable to its voting citizens). Plus they have gambling and auto racing!

No. Bad idea. Starting small and scaling up is a recipe for horrible low-quality results. Start large (e.g. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... al.svg.png) and scale down.
