Harassment is terrible, and it should never happen. I think the UoCR founder should be ashamed and know that NS is not a harassment-filled kind of place. Multiple people have made threads before about leaving due to harassment, and I commend the mods for trying to stifle it as they are. We should always try to combat harassment, wherever we are.

harrasment sucks sure but there is differences in harrasment and shit talk. Most of harrasment happened due the person behavior on internet where some people don't like it and others too. I don't deny there isn't but it is very small chances to happen like sexual stuff than just being called as faggot(http://www.pewinternet.org/2014/10/22/o ... arassment/). Most of worse cases happens from the victim self who doesn't properly anonymize self against it. You also forget the repercussion of over moderation which lowers the freedom of speech in message boards.

You know, I totally agree with you, their is a difference.
As a gay blind man, I've had a lot of shit talk and I've learnt to grow a pretty thick skin. No thick skin can protect you from sexual harassment though, as well as blackmail and other forms of unloveable behaviour. The two should not be conflated.

Don't we all wish it was that simple? Harassment, especially sexual, puts people in an extremely tight position. Imagine, for example, that a person was being blackmailed with personal content, threatened with their contact info or location, or if it was someone in a position of trust or power who was pressuring them. You are clearly speaking as someone who has not experienced this. I would like to remind you that harassment of this sort is against the law in every developed country on Earth, nobody tolerates it, and neither should you.

Quite. The fact is, the moderators are here precisely to help out in situations like this. More than half the time, it's farting around, snark, or shit-posting that is not actually actionable. The serious ones need us to be involved, both for the protection of the players and for the site.

If players like North Curbstompia and Fluffy Moths want to take actions into their own hands, do so on some unmoderated site. On this one, we have rules ... and they are enforced.

Have you ever had someone act like they care about you, like you're the only important thing in their world? They'll tell you that, and they'll make you believe it; they may even pretend to be suicidal making you pour out your sympathy to them. They'll get you to the point where you're as reliant on their attention and on their happiness as they claim they are on you. You might go to great lengths for this person; you might, for example, take a flight to another country...the other person might be their, but they might not; they don't care, it all really depends what they're plans are that night and whether the game they're playing on you is the top of their agenda. After all, they're probably playing a similar game on someone else, or possibly two other people.
If you realise how much they're using you and end it, they'll cry; sure they will. Generally, from what I know for a few days they'll accept that you've left them. They might act over-sweet in public in an effort to try and win you back or something, but they won't do anything you'd say is too weird.

A year later, I was calling the police because this man was threatening my family and contacting me more than 75 times a day. I couldn't get a restraining order out on this guy because he was not a UK national, and their was little they could do to help me. I carried on blocking him, and I carried on ignoring him; you'd think he'd stop but of course he didn't. I started neglecting friends and family, and my confidence dropped so low I hardly ever went out to do things I enjoyed. My education suffered, my work suffered. If I hadn't had such amazing friends I don't know where I'd be right now; to tell you the truth I don't know if I'd be right now.
Now I volunteer my time to help and act as a counsellor to people who were in that position. So I say to you, feel free to call me a faggot, I won't mind. Feel free to make disparaging jokes about my disability, I won't mind; hell, why not put the two in tandem, make jokes about a blind fag if you want. Their are a few of them, I don't mind giving you the ones I've heard a hundred times before if you think it'll make you feel better.
But don't you fucking dare come on here and claim that persistent sexual harassment is anything like someone calling you an upsetting name on the internet. Sexual harassment kills people, and if you'd spoken to some of the people who were thinking of taking their one lives because somebody was making their lives absolute hell, you wouldn't go onto the internet and talk shit about something you very clearly know nothing about. There is no justification for harassment, there is no placing the blame on the victim of harassment.

If anyone has resources they want to add to this thread, perhaps that would be another step forward (compiling the resources from various regions and players, I've seen other players working on this subject as well).
