Sporaltryus wrote:Fellow South Pacificans and friends abroad,

Many of you are undoubtedly aware of recent events involving the South Pacific, alongside our allies in the League and Concord, the Order of the Grey Wardens, and 10000 Islands, and the North Pacific. In the time since, we have had invaluable conversations with South Pacificans at home and with other stakeholders, which have informed not only new perspectives on these events but also new ideas as we move forward.

Is "not extorting your allies" a new idea? I always assumed that was a concept as old as time. Glad to see TSP catch up to the times, I suppose.

We wish to express our deepest regrets for our role in this series of events, including both the original ultimatum and the April 8 response statement, and we retract our assent to both. Specifically, we wish to apologize to Hulldom, to the government of The North Pacific, and most of all, to the citizens of The North Pacific.

Did you read it? This is apparently a high bar, considering neither TGW nor XKI seem to have managed it. You posted it, but since signatures don't mean anything apparently I thought it was wise to check.

We are ashamed that our actions impinged upon the democratic independence of The North Pacific. Both of our regions have long, treasured traditions of democratic governance. By its nature, this means that there will come times when our citizens make different decisions, our governments follow different paths, and our regions adopt different beliefs; that these differences emerge naturally from our differing democratic processes; and that our diplomatic communications should be mindful of these differences.

Wait, are you saying your administration had the full backing of your citizenship while you attempted to bully TNP, and again when you doubled down on it? I assume you did, given the responses of citizens like Qvait, but if you did, how can one assume TSP has changed its position since the statement doubling down on the extortion? Which is already an absurdly generous assumption given you were the one to post the statement doubling down on it, and you waited a full two weeks on attempting to disingenuously backpedal. I hate to say it, but you should've taken an example in Quebec - at least he attempted to seem sorry immediately.

Our recent actions overlooked these differences and leveraged our own interests, and the interests of our involved allies, against the voices of citizens of The North Pacific.

No shit.

It was unfair and unacceptable to force a choice between the democratic input of citizens and the policy concerns of foreign governments, and we will move forward with renewed respect for the voices of citizens of The North Pacific and commitment to respect those voices, even when such differences arise in the future.

So you're essentially saying you had no respect for the North Pacific prior to facing consequences for your actions? Telling.

It is clear now, with the benefit of hindsight, that we relied excessively on the experiences and perspectives of individual foreign policy actors; that we deferred inordinately to the beliefs and expressed intentions of more established figures; and that our response to criticism was born of individual frustrations rather than collective level-headedness.

What? Who are you even referring to? I am assuming you're blaming HumanSanity for this, who has resigned in a neat attempt at feigning any sort of reform, but even if we take it at face value that this was HS' idea from start to finish, you are essentially saying you just mindlessly listened to his input, went along with it every step of the way, posted the statement without even questioning it and only came to the conclusion that it might have been a bad idea to extort a treaty ally of over a decade nearly two weeks afterwards. You're either A) acting in bad faith to maintain a treaty you want to leverage again when you feel the time is ripe to do so and not sorry at all, B) admitting yours were the actions of a mindless puppet that did not stand up for themselves or act as the leader of a government, in which case it is baffling to me how anyone could trust your word on anything if you get walked over so easily, or C) both. Personally, my money is on C.

In general, it is unclear to me whether this is posted on behalf of the South Pacific or every one of the four major defender regions that all backed you every step of the way before they realised it might bring consequences for them. There's only TSP signatures underneath it, but clearly those mean fuck all to defenders, so if I could some clarification on that I would be grateful.

Apparently people procrastinate on apologies as well.

"hey, uh, everyone's pretty mad about the whole fiasco with TNP and all and the fact we doubled down. the other regions are all apologizing and retracting their statements. should we do that too?"

"nah, give it like, two weeks"

TSP probably should have followed your example in diplomacy, then they wouldn't have treaties to worry about anymore.

Where's Observing Curiousities when they are needed to get to the bottom of this? Why did GlenWhatup not notice this discrepancy when responding to the statement? Did his screenreader glitch???

The greatest asset of the South Pacific Special Forces has always been the South Pacific itself. Our strength is our community and our members are animated by their experience and roots in many corners of the region.

Concrete Slab is one such member. Slab has built a deep foundation in the South Pacific over the past five years, serving as a long-time member of the Local Council, Coral Guard, and building a healthy resume in WA authorship.

When I received Slab's application, I wondered how a kid with a huge fountain of energy would adapt to the rigors of advanced military gameplay. Slab has had a winding path in the South Pacific, standing trial before the High Court for corruption and bribery (twice?) for various misdeeds. I worried we wouldn't be able to harness that energy or that Slab wouldn't commit to refining his craft.

I have never more enjoyed being proven wrong. Since joining the SPSF, Slab has been nothing short of delightful to work with. He took to the daily work of defending instantly, asked insightful questions to learn and grow his defending ability, and then stepped into the role of Minister of Defense with great energy, utilizing his deep foundation within the region to grow the SPSF to new heights during the sieges of England. Every organization at times needs a jolt of energy and a blast of purpose to reinvigorate itself, and to get its old farts out of their rocking chairs to get to work. Slab has been that energy and that purpose and shows no sign of stopping.

By unanimous vote of the General Corps, Concrete Slab is hereby promoted to Officer. May he be our foundation for years to come.

Concrete Slab has been Minister of Defense since February, which is a civilian position with a four month term (though obviously, in my experiences, carries substantial sway and direct management of the military), which any Legislator can be elected (now appointed) to. The promotion to Officer is an indefinite role within the military rank structure that requires certain skills to be completed, and approval from the Generals Corps specifically.
