I’m late, but I wanted to say that Feb 2022 news post was really engaging. I enjoyed it.

@LC article: I agree the LC needs reform, but I’m not enthralled with the idea of appointing the LC as that would completely undermine the idea that the LC represents the GP community. I don’t see what that change would accomplish.

The LC was created as a compromise between Tsunamy who wanted a bicameral legislature (in-game and forum-based) and Glen-Rhodes who wanted no distinct in-game representation (believing the players who were on the RMB but didn’t join the forum held no interest in the governing of the region). I was quietly very supportive of Tsu’s vision and put a compromise on the table: instead of a legislature, we’d have in-game elections to fill a small local gov’t and give it jurisdiction over in-game regional management. The power of ordinances was open-ended. What I secretly hoped the LC would do is use their ordinances to legislate the creation of an ongoing RMB-based town hall or legislature (the Leg could have designated hours on TSP RMB, or make use of a TSP Town Hall region sharing its RMB with TSP via an embassy.) The failure of the LC to develop the LC beyond an executive is, in my mind, the reason why it hasn’t brought a lot of value or continuous engagement to TSP. I couldn’t spell out this idea in 2014, as it’d have kiboshed the whole compromise — so it was left open ended in the hopes that LC would come to recognize the value in regular public meetings on its own.

I’ve always felt it’s a waste that democratic NS regions will have hundreds of potential voters and instead they limit their elections to the same thirty-five electors under a whole host of strictly anti-democratic arguments (e.g., if they cared they’d get citizenship, they don’t know anything). Most governments barely even make their own regions aware that an election is imminent and if they want to participate they will have to register before a certain cutoff. Ultimately, if a government is elected by these same thirty-five players over and over again, they’re more or less responsible to those thirty-five players and not the region at large, which explains why recent governments put so much emphasis in ensuring those players are ‘culturally’ engaged on Discord.

There is clearly no issue with new nations being founded in NS, the GCR population graphs mostly increase with the usual erratic spikes in between. All these new players may be engaging in the game in a different way, placing less importance on and showing less interest in the regional government format that has been accepted practice. The shift this data identifies may be one away from government activity and toward treating NS as another space for community interaction similar to a social media hub.

This gets at the core of a phenomenon that I think has been happening for a long time, although I wouldn’t limit it just to new players. Much of the democratic activity in GCRs used to come from established players, who aren’t any more immune to this phenomenon than new players.

I would toss out a theory for consideration that this article and the article below it regarding campaign monoculture may be linked and driven by a common change in NS. In the sense that the formal political process is becoming less important to players as a regional “super” consensus emerges because there are less differences for the political process to contest.

I’ve notice the campaign monoculture thing occurring in other mature GCR democracies.

The Treaty of Lake Calenhad

Postby TSP Foreign Office » Thu Jun 02, 2022 6:29 am

Prime Minister Moon and First Warden Grea Kriopia sealing the deal

Attention all travelers. Welcome to South Pacific International Seaport. The local time here is currently ten past seven in the evening. Please remain within the passenger seating area until the vessel is safely docked.

“Wait, what?” the Warden asked, turning to the South Pacifican beside them. “Where are we? And — wait a minute, when did that lampshade get on your head?”

“That thing’s always been on my head,” the South Pacifican replied. “What are you talking about?”

“Okay, forget about that,” the Warden said, throwing up their hands. “Let’s start with one thing at a time. How are we getting to Lake Calenhad?”

“Lake Calvin’s Hat? Never heard of it.”

“No, no, no!” exclaimed the exasperated Warden. “Lake kah-len-had. You know, the one we named our whole treaty for…”

“Oh, the treaty! Sorry,” the South Pacifican muttered, flipping through the folio folder in their lap. They gestured to the lampshade on their head. “Hard to see through this thing. Err, you probably can’t tell by looking at me, but I’m smiling sheepishly under this thing right now.”

“Okay, great. How’d we even get from the Amaranthine Ocean to the… South… Pacific?”

There was a moment of silence. “I, uh,” the South Pacifican started. “I’m giving you a blank stare right now. Under the, you know, lampshade.” They gestured again to their head.

The Warden turned to look straight at the South Pacifican who, ostensibly, was staring back. “Let me just get this one thing straight. Are we even in Thedas right now?”

“Oh! I get it, I finally get it! You’re still in your whole Dragon Age shebang!” said the South Pacifican, laughing. “I didn’t realize you Wardens took your roleplay so seriously.” There was a pause. “Oh, by the way. You can’t see, but I’m laughing right now.”

But the Warden didn’t catch that last sentence. “Roleplay…?” they muttered, confused, under their breath. “So they think fighting darkspawn is some kind of act?” But they mustered a smile at the lampshade sitting next to them. “Let’s just announce this treaty and call it a day.”

Little did our two confused characters know, as they tried in vain to find a logical explanation of their situation, the captain of their ferry was doing their announcement for them.

This is your captain speaking. Before we disembark today, I’d like to offer a special welcome to the diplomatic delegation from the Grey Wardens. It’s my pleasure to read this official message from the Government of the Coalition of the South Pacific describing the purpose of their visit today…

Image

The Coalition of the South Pacific and the Order of the Grey Wardens have the pleasure to announce the ratification of the Treaty of Lake Calenhad, ushering in a new era of harmonious cooperation between the two longtime partners. The treaty of mutual defense, military and cultural cooperation was overwhelmingly approved by the relevant bodies of both regions, finally formalizing the fruitful relationship that have existed between the South Pacific and the Grey Wardens since the latter's reboot in 2016.

The name originates from the lore of the Dragon Age video game series, from which the Grey Wardens have taken their name from. Lake Calenhad is the largest lake in Ferelden, a kingdom of many barons who unite together to fight off darkspawn and the setting of the first game of the series, Origins. We felt that the name was more than a fitting reference to our extensive history of collaboration and a combined desire to prevent invaders from encroaching on sovereign territories.

The South Pacific would like to thank the leadership of the Grey Wardens, particularly First Warden Grea Kriopia, High Constable Sir Merlin and Warden-Commander Altmoras, for their infectious enthusiasm and insightful perspective during negotiations, and hope that our two regions continue to be intimate companions for the foreseeable future.

The Grey Wardens would like to thank Prime Minister Moon and the team from the South Pacific for their earnest attitudes and exceptional shitposting during negotiations. From shared humor to mutual cooperation, the future of friendship between our regions has much in store. And, of course, Curious Observations is right.

Signed,

Emodea, Prime Minister of the South Pacific
Sandaoguo, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the South Pacific
Grea Kriopia, First Warden of the Order of the Grey Wardens
Sir Merlin, High Constable of the Order of the Grey Wardens

TREATY OF LAKE CALENHAD

The South Pacific and The Order of the Grey Wardens, recognizing our shared defender values and close historical ties, hereby enter into this alliance for friendship, mutual defense, and military partnership.

Article I. Mutual Recognition of Government Legitimacy

Section 1. The parties to this treaty recognize as legitimate governments that government espoused by the authoritative representatives of each region, and will not extend that recognition to any government otherwise represented.

Section 2. The South Pacific shall be authoritatively represented by the government of the Coalition of the South Pacific, embodied principally for these purposes jointly by the Prime Minister as head of government and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, unless the Council of Regional Security, as the Coalition’s security institution, lawfully declares a state of emergency, in which case it shall be authoritative for the duration of the state of emergency. The respective military authority of the South Pacific is the South Pacific Special Forces (SPSF), embodied principally by the Minister of Defense and the General Corps.

Section 3. The Order of the Grey Wardens shall be authoritatively represented by the First Warden as its head of governance, or in their absence by the High Constable, or in their absence by the collective of Warden-Commanders.

Section 4. Should the government of either party change, authoritative representation will be performed by the corresponding functionally equivalent positions or institutions.

Section 5. A “territory” of either party shall be a region which exists under the sovereign protection or control of the party’s legitimate government. In order for a territory or home region to be afforded protections under this treaty, it must be listed below:
  1. The Order of the Grey Wardens, as the home region of The Order of the Grey Wardens.
  2. The South Pacific, as the home region of the Coalition of the South Pacific.
  3. The Amaranthine Isles, as a territory of The Order of the Grey Wardens.
  4. The Frontier, as a territory of The Order of the Grey Wardens.

Article II. Non-Aggression and Mutual Defense

Section 1. The parties shall respect the sovereignty of the other, encourage that respect amongst their partners and allies, and acknowledge that with sovereignty comes the right to govern themselves in the way of their choosing.

Section 2. The parties to this treaty agree not to attack the home region or any territory of the other party, nor participate in any action with the intent to overthrow their legitimate government.

Section 3. Both parties will refrain from conspiring, either directly or through a third party, to destabilize or overthrow the legitimate government of either party’s home region or territories.

Section 4. Both parties will refrain from conducting clandestine operations, espionage, or other forms of spying against either party.

Section 5. Both parties will, in good faith, report any known threat or concern related to the other party's security, to the appropriate security organs. For the South Pacific, the appropriate security organ will be the Council on Regional Security. For the Order of the Grey Wardens, the appropriate security organ will be the First Warden.

Section 6. The parties to this treaty may seek assistance for the self-defense of their home region or a territory by lodging an official request with the appropriate officials.

Section 7. Both parties agree to aid each other against attempts to illegally overthrow the in-game Delegate of their respective home regions or territories.

Article III. Cooperation

Section 1. The parties’ home regions shall share in-game and off-site embassies in order to allow cross-posting. If an illegal delegate of one parties’ region closes the in-game embassy with the party region's counterpart, embassies shall be restored immediately following the restoration of the legitimate delegate.

Section 2. The parties to this treaty agree to seek opportunities for military cooperation in defensive, liberation, and anti-fascist operations.

Section 3. Both parties agree to share intelligence as circumstances permit for the purposes of conducting defensive operations. Both parties agree to keep classified any sensitive information regarding military affairs that concerns the other party or its defense operations, and only publish that information in a manner mutually agreed upon.

Section 4. The parties to this treaty will endeavor to conduct communal cultural activities. This will include military confidence building measures and wargames at least once per year.

Section 5. The parties will assist each other during lawful delegate transitions of their home region or a territory upon request if operational circumstances permit.

Article IV. Peaceful Settlement of Disputes

Section 1. The parties to this treaty undertake to settle any and all disputes between them through peaceful means and to refrain from using the threat of force or sanction against one another while this treaty is in force.

Article V. Deposit and Clarification

Section 1. This treaty shall be deposited in a publicly accessible area of the community forums of both parties.

Section 2. The parties to this treaty may, from time to time, clarify the terms of this treaty through memorandums of understanding, which shall be posted alongside the treaty.

Article VI. Suspension of Terms and Termination of the Treaty

Section 1. Either party may suspend the terms of the treaty, if the other party has materially breached its terms, until such a time that both parties peacefully settle the dispute and adopt a memorandum of understanding that the treaty is again in force.

Section 2. Either party may terminate the treaty with five days’ notice, posted publicly in the forum of deposit in both regions, after which the terms of the treaty are no longer binding on either party.

This alliance isn’t quite so natural or obvious as you think! It took quite a bit of negotiation to iron out a treaty. TSP and TGW may be both defender, but that doesn’t mean we’re naturally compatible in all respects. But I don’t want to get in trouble while I’m still technically MoFA :P

The End Game of the South Pacific

Alone in his kitchen, surrounded by empty beer bottles, Roavin lets out a choked sob.
“How did it come to this?” he whispers, “I thought… I thought this could never happen…” he collapses against the table, tears now flowing freely.

Five thousand miles away, Glen smoothly dons his dark red suit jacket, buttoning it up in front of the mirror, before heading over to his sunglasses rack.
“Hmm… which pair today? The poise of the classic black frames? The elegance of the frameless pair? Or maybe the bright green? Now that would be a statement…”
After much deliberation, Glen chooses to wear two pairs: a silver-framed number over the top of a blue-tinted pair, to symbolise power and style respectively, two things Glen has in abundance. He strides purposefully out the door, as he knows that he is one step closer to securing control over the region. He doesn’t want a Defender TSP, he wants a DeGlender TSP.

The year of 2016 was a time of great upheaval for the South Pacific. New delegate and prominent Glenemy Hileville had begun instituting a set of sweeping reforms of dubious legality, and a battle for the future of TSP was raging. However, within 2 short months, Hileville was gone and a Great Council had been called, with Glen now at its helm.

He did not have things all his own way, however. The prevailing attitude of TSP, as an independent region which stood above the Raider and Defender rivalry, did not lend itself to an unfettered Glen-based Charter. With his grasp on power delicate, Glen had to compromise, a word he still shudders at to this day. While he was able to write the bulk of what would become our Charter, it was not truly what he wanted. That was not possible at this stage, he knew he would have to wait.

Towards the end of the 2016 Great Council a new force would emerge in TSP politics, an energetic and charismatic figure called Roavin. Quickly gaining supporters in both TSP and the Defendersphere, Roavin would soon outshine Glen as the leading light of TSP’s political establishment.

This was exactly what Glen wanted.

Roavin would be useful to Glen. Their agreed stance on Defenderism, combined with Roavin’s likeable personality, would make it much easier to move the region’s military and foreign policy attitude in a Glen-friendly direction. Was Roavin ever an ally? Not really - he was a puppet, but Glen was very deft and subtle with how he pulled the strings. Roavin’s close connection to The Grey Wardens worried Glen, as there was a risk that TGW could overpower his influence in the region. Over the next few years, Glen would skilfully walk a thin tightrope, allowing and encouraging Roavin and his allies to move TSP closer and closer to Defenderism, while also preventing any high-profile Defendersphereites from gaining too much power within the region. Glen slowly backed off from public view, content to allow his plans to develop in the background. A new generation of TSPers would rise, consisting of some home-grown talent mixed with young and exciting Defenders from around the NationStatesverse. But Glen was always there. Watching. Waiting. Never losing his position as a voice of authority and respect, while rarely appearing too heavy-handed in his influence over the region.

The pieces of the puzzle started to fall into place. In 2019, TSP would officially become a Defender region. In 2021, long-time mischief-maker Cormac, a prominent international influencer and political opponent of Glen, would find himself unfortunately eradicated from this plane of existence. Glen’s path to power was becoming clearer by the day, but he would have to move fast. During a chaotic three months in which no minister completed their term, Glen saw his opportunity to strike, winning the MoFA special election after the resignation of Roavin. Now firmly back involved with TSP politics, Glen quickly utilised his reputation to gain allies among the new generation. Within three months of his return to power, a Great Council was called. Like 2016, Glen will be at the forefront, leveraging his experience to write the bulk of the new Charter. Unlike 2016, TSP is not a politically fractured and unstable region with an apprehension of moralist Defenderism. This time, the conditions are right, and Glen can shape the region exactly how he wants it. Publicly, he paints a picture of this being his last act before stepping back from the limelight of TSP politics for good, but in private, he knows that this is the closest he has ever got to absolute power. Soon, nobody will be able to stop him.

The sun shines down as Glen strides through the automatic doors of TSP’s government offices. He blows a kiss to the receptionist before entering the lift. Arriving at the top floor, he emerges to be greeted by two young politicians, both dressed in the same dark red suit as he is. Moon and HuSa believe that this is their time to shine, that they are Glen’s protégés and will lead TSP into a bright new future following the Great Council. This is not the case. They are puppets, just as Roavin was. A charismatic screen to cover the ever-strengthening DeGlenderism behind. They will be prominent until they are no longer useful, and then they will be disposed of, and will join Roavin in TSP’s alcoholic scrapheap of former political leaders. Soon, there will only be one.

There will only be Glen.

I must fear Glen. Glen is the TSP-fenda. Glen is the GCR politician who brings total obliteration. I will not face Glen. I will permit him to pass over me and through me. And when Glen has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see his path. Where Glen has gone I will be nothing. Only Glen will remain.

The South Pacific Special Forces Do the Laundry

After showing up to the Defender Olympics with a definitely-not-sensual eggnog theme, the SPSF had learned the hard way about the dangers of spilling eggnog letting a single drop of eggnog go to waste. While our wonderful General HumanSanity may have praised it as a delightfully gooey, scrumptious that one can let "drip...drip...drip down onto your tongue," drinking eggnog in bed from our hotel rooms at the Defender Olympic Village, some of us soon discovered that eggnog becomes a lot less fun when one lets it drip...drip...drip down onto the bedsheets. Lesson learned.

So tonight, the SPSF set out with some of our friends to do our laundry. Our mission was simple: to clean our bedsheets.

And as our sheets tumble around inside the washing machine, we watched every last trace of raider activity tonight get washed away. Because the sheets we carried out of our laundromat weren't just washed and dried. No; tonight, we kept clean sheets all around.

A big thanks to all our friends tonight who helped us as we chased raiders into 21 different region and kept a clean sheet with zero raider hits slipping through. Thanks for visiting the laundromat with us. We look forward to doing our laundry together again in the future.

Uhhh thanks for the detag of Yuno lol
Stop giving misogynistic abusers a platform. Anyone who sides with Tiktok Star Andrew Tate even 1% of what he says will be treated as enemy who should be shamed out of society. Impressions+Views+Videowatches=$. Nothing he says is new or revolutionary. I don't care if he said "some good stuff", it's still bad because: the more you watch him, the more ad revenue MONEY and algorithm BOOSTS you're giving him to traffick victims. And don't say the victim lied, a young man stupidly told me that the victim confessed to lying, I told em to link me proof, articles or the Audio of her confession, he googled and found 0 proof 0 articles, and he realized he was spreading fake rumors he heard and BELIEVED without fact-check. Don't brand victims as liars without GOOGLING. Debated here

TERMINATION OF DETENTE WITH OSIRIS

6 July 2022

Two years ago, our Minister of Foreign Affairs, Omega, agreed to a détente and normalization of relations with the Osiris Fraternal Order on reasonable grounds. At the time, Osiris revoked their proscription against our citizens’ participation in the daily affairs of their region. We were also impressed that they proscribed the Rahl family after the 2019 coup attempt in the East Pacific. These conditions at the time made it sensible and feasible to agree to the détente, knowing full well that no treaty would come out of it in the foreseeable future.

However, two years later, Osiris has repeatedly taken steps in the wrong direction that constitute a repeated breach of norms and respect for sovereignty. Just these past few months, Osiris allied itself with two organizations that show nothing but disdain for the principle of regional sovereignty. In April, they signed a treaty, the Covenant of Set with the Brotherhood of Malice, an organization that has shown fervent contempt and disrespect for regional sovereignty and repeatedly antagonized our treaty partners and their allies, such as their repeated provocations through their invasion of Stargate, their targeting of Frozen Circle, and now Operation Ragnarok. Their signing of a treaty with the Brotherhood and its continued existence with effect represents Osiris' complicity in the malicious behavior of the Brotherhood.

And on Wednesday, Osiris announced a treaty, the Stele of Horus, with The Black Hawks, an equally contemptible organization that has been proscribed by the Coalition for repeated acts of subversion and hostility towards our region. If Osiris considers the Brotherhood and The Black Hawks to be their allies, who have respectively shown contempt for regional sovereignty, how can we honestly expect Osiris to respect anyone’s regional sovereignty, no less our own? Given these conditions, the Coalition no longer views this détente as being sustainable, and we shall hereby close our embassy with Osiris, recall our ambassador, and consider the détente between our two regions to no longer be in effect.

It is beyond unfortunate for this to happen, but Osiris demonstrated through their actions that they are no friend of the Coalition or its allies. Until such time that Osiris shows its support for the rule of law, democracy, regional sovereignty, and self-determination, we shall not return to the normalized state of affairs sought after by our predecessors.

Signed,
HumanSanity
Minister of Foreign Affairs

A wise and necessary move after nothing but months of the benefit of the doubt given to OFO and its relationship with other raider organizations

(love the thread title btw)

A good move from TSP, and hopefully more regions follow suit in cutting off these regions.

An excellent statement, but even more excellent is the thread title, which definitely made me chuckle.
