Thorn would never forget nor forgive the baby, the pony and the Art Curator for embarrassing him on a spring afternoon. He went out charging into the battlefield to strike down a set of targets only to find out that every single time he tried to get to the target, the other 3 had already made it there and back to the base. Being out done by people he considered to be ancient history (most people were ancient history to Thorn) infuriated Thorn to a degree that he did not want to admit to anyone in the brotherhood. He retreated to his quarters after that battle and thought to himself on how he should improve. The art curator appeared in his room at some point to give Thorn pointers. This irked Thorn more because he knew the ethereal being was reading his mind, but they were very good pointers, so he did keep them in mind.
After spending several days thinking (or maybe it was hours. His attention span wasn’t long) he decided he’d start practicing by racing the hamster. So began his quest for maximal speed. Racing the hamster was fantastic practice for Thorn. After a week or two of practice he was able to take down targets and lock onto the next one in 10 seconds. This was not yet fast enough, however. After even more thinking (and his brain was really hurting by this point) Thorn remembered a spirit he had conjured at one point. The entity called Waste that he had summoned to assist in destroying 144 targets in 1 night. If anyone knew how to do speed, it would be Waste.
Thus began Thorn’s tutelage in the Land of Many Flowers. Allergies aside, it was the most fun that Thorn had had in a very long time. Blisteringly fast strikes were intoxicating. The ability to take down over 144 targets by himself was a power that he loved. Waste was a hard teacher. After giving him the rundown, he threw Thorn right into combat, keeping pace with Waste and the one called Sw33z3. And it was hard. Far and away the hardest thing Thorn had ever done. They were fast. Insanely fast. Afterall, they were the ones that gatekept the record number of takedowns in a night. 270. The number that Thorn wanted gone. Or better yet, his. After a week of this intense training, he had gone from keeping up with every third strike to keeping up with every second strike to keeping up with 9/10 strikes. Thorn finally matched their casual pace by giving it his 100%.
And thus came the night of the Dragonslayer. Thorn was paired with someone who had also trained extensively in the Land of Many Flowers. He was paired with one who went by the Desert Fox and in that night the duo took down an unknown amount of regions, but they attempted a whopping 175. A feat which impressed even Waste. The duo then agreed that the next attempt would be to try to reach 200.
The night of 200 jumps came and went. The duo managed to reach 210 targets and fully take down 175. They just kept getting better and better. The next goal was the 90-minute record. 193 targets in 90 minutes, set by the defender menace. It was on this stretch where the Imp and the Desert Fox split ways for a while. The fox was locked in a place of the winds.
Thorn needed another duo partner for a while. A duo partner that he found in the form of a spirit of insanity called Qek. Fresh blood in the Land of Many Flowers was he. Incredibly fast also was he. The two of them continued to hone their skills under the tutelage of Waste. Such a time came where the trio attempted yet another record. The 193. Qek took 2 others under his wing on one team and Thorn went out with Waste on the other. Thorn was equipped with his trusty blade “Feather” whilst Waste had the laser blade called “Koru”. With their blades the duo managed the record. 198. And it felt incredibly hollow for Thorn. It wasn’t 200. It wasn’t with the Desert Fox that he had come so far with. And worst of all, it gave Waste yet another record. It wasn’t all lost yet, however. It was this day, 2 months into their training, that Waste had decided Thorn and Qek were worthy to graduate from padawans to knights and granted them each the laser sword of Koru.
Several weeks had passed now. The Desert Fox was free. Qek and Thorn had honed their skills with their laser swords. And so, the quartet of Waste, Thorn, Qek, and Wasc went out again. Thorn had specifically chosen this night because of a time dilation caused by something General. Or maybe it was something Secure? Either way, Thorn and Wasc got beat badly that update. Chased into oblivion and reduced to a measly 121 hits while Qek and Waste had reached 256. A new record. Still a sour taste left in the mouths of the duo. Like the masochists they were, they said again.
And this brings us to the modern day (and mostly out of me turning a raid report into an ego fest for myself). The night of August 27th the quartet set off again in their usual formations, this time even accompanied by an Eastern Cat of the Catiania variety. This night was nice however, not a single soul was found chasing them. Wasc and Thorn quickly realized that they were on pace to their goal. 75 targets down. 100. 125. 150. 175. 200. Finally when the 90-minute timer went off the duo had left behind a pile of 214 bodies. An all-time 3rd best (2nd in 90 minutes) AND most importantly, they became the first duo to achieve 200 hits in any context without any help from Waste. The grass is certainly greener when you are producing no waste.
