Realm of Asgard: Constitution Passed, Elections Upcoming

Frequently Asked Questions

Basic Questions

What is Asgard all about?

Founded in 2012, Asgard has just returned from a long hiatus. What we're all about will largely be determined by citizens of Asgard. We have just started our 2017 Constitutional Convention, which will give newcomers and returning players an opportunity to weigh in on what Asgard will be for today's generation of Asgardians. We encourage newcomers to check out our guide, Getting Started in Asgard, and apply for citizenship to participate in our constitutional convention and help shape the future of Asgard.

There's so much about this game I still don't understand. Can you help?

We're in the process of putting together an Information Directory, a compilation of information to help new players more easily figure out how NationStates works and how they can get more involved in Asgard. Some of this information will be written by Asgardians and some will be written by others, with full credit to them, of course. Several links have already been added and we will be adding even more as we get it written or discover helpful information that has been written by others.

In the meantime, feel free to ask any questions you have here (or elsewhere). We're always happy to help!

Advanced Questions

What is Asgard's gameplay alignment?

While much of what Asgard is going to be about will be left up to citizens participating in the constitutional convention, one thing that has already been decided is that Asgard's gameplay alignment will be independent. What this means is that Asgard will act in external affairs -- foreign affairs and military operations -- according to its regional interests, rather than according to the raider or defender ideology, or any other ideology for that matter. Asgard will be aiming for true independence and not simply "raider lite."

What is Asgard's embassy policy?

We aren't accepting either game-side or off-site embassies, or diplomatic visa applications, until after the constitutional convention. Diplomats from other regions are welcome to join our Discord server in the meantime. Our embassy policy will be decided by the executive government, in whatever form that may take, after the constitutional convention has concluded. It's expected that the policy for game-side embassies will be somewhat more stringent than the policy for off-site embassies.

Information

The Great Heathen Army is the independent military force of Asgard, dedicated to pursuing Asgard's regional interests through military operations and expanding Asgard's power on the world stage. The independent alignment of Asgard and the Great Heathen Army doesn't mean "raider lite"; we will engage in both invasions and defenses as training operations to maintain military activity, and we are willing to engage in more serious non-training invasions and defenses according to the interests of our region. We strongly believe that being a major power in today's NationStates world requires more flexibility than in the past, and that a regional military capable of staying true to its allies and taking the fight to its enemies must be well practiced in both invasions and defenses.

The Great Heathen Army will continue and build upon the legacy of the Asgard Imperial Armed Forces (AIAF), the first iteration of Asgard's military, founded in 2012. The AIAF is best known for the nearly one month long invasion and annexation of the region Christmas, prompting the WA Security Council to pass SC#95: Liberate Christmas, which remains on the books to this day. While we are proud to have been home to the Vikings who stole Christmas, the AIAF was much more than that, participating in numerous anti-fascist operations during its brief existence. The Great Heathen Army will continue to take the fight to fascists in NationStates, as well as to other regions that adhere to and promote similarly extreme and offensive ideologies.

As an independent military force, the Great Heathen Army encourages enlistment by anyone from any gameplay background, provided they are able to respect our independent alignment. No one will be turned away from enlistment in the Great Heathen Army due to a preference for raiding or defending, and no one will be expected to participate in any operation with which they are uncomfortable. Our independent alignment places our region and our citizens first ahead of ideological or moralistic considerations, and as a result, we would prefer to have as many of our citizens participating in the Great Heathen Army as are interested. We will, of course, take great care to ensure operational security when engaging in any operation, our own or others'.

Any citizen who is interested in participating in the Great Heathen Army is encouraged to enlist here.

Ranks

Soldiers of the Great Heathen Army advance through its ranks according to the criteria set forth below. Soldiers who demonstrate their dedication to the Great Heathen Army ahead of dedication to any other military force will advance more quickly through its ranks, especially its officer ranks, ensuring that the Great Heathen Army will always be led by experienced soldiers who have put Asgard's military activity first. In addition to advancing through these ranks, soldiers may receive ribbons and other honors for active participation in military operations.

Enlisted Ranks

Konstabel: A new enlistee with no prior military experience will be enlisted at the rank of Konstabel.

Overkonstabel: A new enlistee may be enlisted at the rank of Overkonstabel if they have limited prior military experience. A Konstabel will be promoted to Overkonstabel after successfully completing one update operation with the Great Heathen Army.

Korporal: A new enlistee may be enlisted at the rank of Korporal if they have considerable prior military experience. An Overkonstabel will be promoted to Korporal after demonstrating consistent cooperation and dedication to the Great Heathen Army.

Sergent: A new enlistee may be enlisted at the rank of Sergent if they have significant military command experience. A Korporal will be promoted to Sergent after demonstrating great confidence and skill in the Great Heathen Army's military operations.

Officer Ranks

Løjtnant: A Sergent will be promoted to Løjtnant after demonstrating consistent leadership potential in the Great Heathen Army and proving helpful in the training of new enlistees.

Kaptajn: A Løjtnant will be promoted to Kaptajn after taking leadership of multiple military operations in the Great Heathen Army and inspiring confidence in their leadership ability among their fellow soldiers.

Major: A Kaptajn will be promoted to Major, the highest non-command rank, after demonstrating exceptional operational leadership skills over the course of a significant period of time.

Command Ranks

Oberst: An Oberst will be a member of Great Heathen Army command, will be responsible for assisting the Marskal in operational command and communication with allied and friendly military forces, and will advise and assist in overall command of the Great Heathen Army.

Marskal: The Marskal will be the operational commander of the Great Heathen Army, responsible for its day-to-day operations. The Marskal will be responsible for coordination of update operations and the primary point of contact for allied and friendly military forces. The Marskal may promote soldiers through the enlisted ranks of the Great Heathen Army and may recommend promotion through the officer and command ranks to the Konge, whose prerogative it will be as Commander-in-Chief of the Great Heathen Army to commission all officers and commanders.

Best of luck. Here's hoping Asgard's revival lasts. ^^
Never underestimate the power of cynicism, pessimism and negativity to prevent terrible things from happening. Only idealists try to build the future on a mountain of bodies.

The Thing to Remember About NationStates is that it is an almost entirely social game - fundamentally, you have no power beyond your own ability to convince people to go along with your ideas. In that sense, even the most dictatorial region is fundamentally democratic.

Stop giving misogynistic abusers a platform. Anyone who sides with Tiktok Star Andrew Tate even 1% of what he says will be treated as enemy who should be shamed out of society. Impressions+Views+Videowatches=$. Nothing he says is new or revolutionary. I don't care if he said "some good stuff", it's still bad because: the more you watch him, the more ad revenue MONEY and algorithm BOOSTS you're giving him to traffick victims. And don't say the victim lied, a young man stupidly told me that the victim confessed to lying, I told em to link me proof, articles or the Audio of her confession, he googled and found 0 proof 0 articles, and he realized he was spreading fake rumors he heard and BELIEVED without fact-check. Don't brand victims as liars without GOOGLING. Debated here

This afternoon, the Realm of Asgard's 2017 Constitutional Convention concluded and passed the Constitution of Asgard by a vote of 6-0 with one abstention. The new constitution establishes a constitutional monarchy, which features the following:

  • An elected Statsminister, elected to two month terms to serve as head of the Ministerråd, Asgard's executive government;
  • An elected World Assembly Delegate called the Delegeret, elected to four month terms;
  • An elected legislature called the Folketing, elected to staggered two month terms, providing monthly legislative elections;
  • An independent judiciary called the Højesteret and an independent attorney general called the Rigsadvokaten, appointed by the Konge (King).
With passage of the Constitution of Asgard comes elections on the horizon. On July 1, elections will begin for Statsminister, Delegeret, and Folketing. Due to the staggering of elections for the Folketing, a special election will also begin on July 1 for an abbreviated one month Folketing term until midterm elections are conducted in August. There are expected to be three seats in the Folketing for the coming two month legislative session, though the number won't be definitively determined until shortly before voting begins, based on the number of candidates standing for election.

Anyone interested in reading the Constitution of Asgard in its entirety may do so here. Anyone should feel free to ask any questions about terminology or anything else regarding how the new government of the Realm of Asgard will work.

This is an exciting time in Asgard with passage of our new Constitution, upcoming elections, the Great Heathen Army already starting operations, and a steadily growing population, so there has never been a better time to get involved!
