The Homeland Reclaimed!

Before the cities of the Roman Empire lit up with the flame of civilization and built a state that stretched across three continents, conquering many barbarian forces, the original warrior tribes lived in the old Dominion of Firehelm. They spent their time ravaging native lands close to them and infiltrating nearby tribes to take all they had, and their realm prospered for a while. However, after a brutal civil war most of the surviving people had to migrate from their homeland and into the north lands which were inhabited by many different native civilizations. They would spend a long time subjugating these kingdoms and tribes, gradually carving up more and more land for themselves. Finally, the old Overlord and leader of these migrations settled his main force next to the river Tiber and started up a small settlement called Rome. In this settlement he proclaimed the start of the Roman Empire, and all of the conquered territory became Imperial land.

They had left their old home behind to build a new, more prosperous empire and to establish a force which would not be brought down by any forces, outside or inside. And the old Dominion was left to rot in decay, with the remaining few forces joining into a short term alliance with another band of raiders. However, recently the Emperor managed to work out the deal with the chief who had held the region and lead the opposing side of the civil war. The old territories were brought back under Imperial control, personally held by the Emperor, and now enjoy the special status as the Prefecture of Firehelm. And in turn, the other chief was allowed into the server of the Empire, where his safety has been guaranteed. A small garrison of Roman troops moved in to secure the borders of the Prefecture and preserve what is left of their past. The date on which this occurred, which is the 14th of January, will in future years be celebrated within the Roman Empire as an important holiday, when the motherland was returned to proper rule.

The Senate and Elections

In December the Emperor wrote and published the First Imperial Edict, in which he detailed the reforms which would add a political aspect to the region. Having a blend of political and cultural activities within a raider region was the original plan for Rome, where raiding would be the main focus and purpose and the politics would exist as additional activity to interest people and give them more chances to rise up and contribute. When it was founded Rome did have a political system, but it was too rushed and after some infighting was scrapped and Rome went on to function with the structure of a regular raider region. However, time has passed and the region has grown, and now the first step towards creating a new and unique system has been taken.

The SPQR(Senate and People of Rome) was created with the purpose of serving as a legislature, which would require the Emperor's approval for passed legislation. All members of who hold the rank of Legionary or higher are allowed to participate in discussions, votes, and elections, and can write their own proposals. Additionally, the position of Consul was created to oversee the SPQR with an intentionally small term of one month. With this also came the creation of social classes, which would serve as the foundation for future expansions of the system. The Patrician class would act as the ruling class of the region, while the equites class would be the backbone of the Empire as members of that class are true enlisted and trained Romans, the Proletarii class differs in that they are just enlisted but untrained Romans that enjoy few rights, and the Latin class consists of regular residents who have a nation within the Empire and have almost no specific rights. The first election for the office of Consul which would determine who would serve from late December to late January saw three candidates(Darth Tiberius/Byroms, Chelvo, Pageko) step up, having both the Optimates and Populares factions represented along with an independent candidate. The election ended with Darth Tiberius/Byroms winning in a landslide, with even candidate Chelvo giving his vote and support to the winner. The first term was a satisfactory one, as the forum which was previously only used for membership applications and storage and was rejected for discussion in favor of the discord actually saw activity and a few different proposals being proposed. A new member managed to pass an act to start up a roleplay, however since he had to leave due to RL restraints another Roman will have to be put in charge of running it. Currently we are in the middle of the election for the second term, where Darth Tiberius has opted not to run and given their support to Chelvo, who is sweeping up the votes. It seems this term will go to the Populares faction, who also have the WA Delegate of the region on their side. Due to the special privileges this grants them, it is interesting to speculate what they have in plan once they take over the office of Consul.

Unreported Raids

Last week the Roman warmachine went full speed ahead and was online to fight the fendas and natives alike during ever major update and a few minor updates. Aside from speedruns and racing with the greys, we also trained a couple new members who got into it pretty quickly and earned promotions from Munifex to Legionary. A healthy boom in embassies has been recorded as a result of this consistent raiding, as well as tired but satisfied Romans. There was also an attempt made at a multi team raid but there were a lot of unexpected no-shows so after essentially raiding with one team for 10-15 minutes the raid was ended and the no-shows were demoted, hit with stick, and hosed down. We're also happy to see Pageko try out triggering for the first time with pretty solid accuracy and speed and look forward to seeing him hone his skills more. Below are the hitcounts and participants of the larger raids that managed to pass the filter for a forum post, spoilered for your convenience because in Rome the barbarian is always right ~~on the cross~~.

Episode I: The Barbarian Menace

(Sage advice for a barbarian.)

A long time ago (actually 2 days) in a galaxy far, far away (actually just here)...

The Roman Empire is continuing its reign of dominance over the barbarian regions. The iron fist of the Emperor rules over hundreds of regions and there is no end in sight. The cultured among NationStates welcome the presence of the mighty Roman Empire, but the barbarian swine continue to fight back in a futile effort to retain their independence. Why even try?

The barbarians found a mysterious ally in their fight against the good wholesome warriors of Rome. Who is this ally? The wise Emperor does not know. But he must find out. He must discover who this mysterious barbarian sympathizer is because his spies tell him that this man is powerful and effective. The spies must be lying to the Emperor because no barbarian could be powerful or effective so they were beheaded just before Emperor Plagentine and his apprentice Optio Hired Contractor departed on their quest to find and kill this barbarian menace, taking them through 20 barbarians lands.

Episode II: Attack of the Romans

(The reaction many barbarians are having as they watch the supreme dominance and might of The Roman Empire overcome their futile uprising.)

A long time ago (actually just yesterday) in a galaxy far, far away (actually just here)...

The quest to discover the identify of the mysterious barbarian leader and then kill the uncultured swine came up short. They were able to determine that the man helping the barbarians organize and resist the loving arms of the Empire is a Dark Lord of the delusional cult that call themselves The Grey Wardens. This Dark Lord has been plotting against the Emperor and leading the fight against the Empire for no reason other than his own pride. He has those inferior barbarians fooled. Fortunately for them, the Emperor cannot stand the sight of such an injustice and will not stop until the world is rid of the deceptive Grey Warden.

Forced out of the dark shadows by the Emperor's cunning PR campaign, this Dark Lord is forced to use his barbarian army to launch a full scale war against the Empire ahead of schedule. The wise Emperor foresaw such a move and has already prepared his unstoppable Legions and sent them to attack 27 strategic barbarian strongholds in a triumphant offensive coordinated by Optio Hired Contractor.

Cornered by the Roman army, the dark lord is forced to make his escape by sacrificing his own warriors as a shield for his getaway. Emperor Plagentine, a masterful swordsman, would have surely outclassed the cowardly Grey Warden if he hadn't ran away.

Episode III: Revenge of the Romans (almost)

(The Emperor's bold declaration before he and his apprentice enter combat with the final barbarian disciples.)

A long time ago (actually today) in a galaxy far, far away (actually just here)...

Enraged by the cowardly retreat of the Dark Lord and a group of his barbarian disciples, Emperor Plagentine and his loyal apprentice, Optio Hired Contractor, embark alone on a mission to eliminate this uprising once and for all. 47 barbarian regions have already fallen to the Empire since the beginning of this uprising. The dark lord and his disciples are alone now. Their house of cards is crumbling down around them as more and more barbarians willfully offer themselves to Rome and embrace our culture and Emperor. They are only postponing their eventual decimation.

The Dark Lord and what remain of his misguided followers are holed up in an abandoned temple. They are afraid and starving, but they believe themselves to be safe for the time being. They believe they are hidden. They couldn't possibly be any more naive. The Emperor and his apprentice enter through the roof and face off against the 37 remaining heretics. Using their masterful knowledge of combat and incredible skill, they defeat every single one of the heretics with their blades, arrows, and even their bare hands. Their heroics shall never be forgotten.

Only the Dark Lord remains now. The cowardly Grey Warden attempts to negotiate with the Emperor. The Emperor finds this last act of desperation to be disappointing, but not unexpected. Proving his grace and mercy, the Emperor gives the Dark Lord one final chance to repent and bend the knee to the Empire. The Dark Lord foolishly rejects the offer and begins to run away. The Emperor and his apprentice chase the fleeing Grey Warden, but soon realize that a coward will go to extreme lengths to ensure his own survival. They discover that a trap door was made that allowed the coward to slide down a secret tunnel and away from the temple. The Dark Lord escapes the clutches of the Roman Empire once more, but only by a hair and only temporarily as the Emperor vows to get his revenge.

Roman loyalists clash with the rebels

Is it just a small spark, or the start of something gargantuan?

This is the question that Roman Legates asked themselves after 41 rebellious soldiers were defeated in battle by the Emperor. A small band of rebels, to be sure, but they seemed to know exactly where the Imperial guard would be passing.

"DEATH TO THE EMPEROR!" they shouted as they charged "GLORY RESTORED!"

The recent reforms definitely caused a stir within the Empire, but is it possible that they hurt the interests of certain people so much that they would openly rebel? Is this just a small rogue band of traitors, or was this a planned and deliberate attack, a result of some conspiracy organized by someone in a position of power.

The Emperor sighed as he washed the blood of his face in his tent, this definitely calls for an investigation. If this rebellion is part of a bigger plot, then his life and that of thousands of other Romans is in danger.

The faith of Rome remains to be seen...

Episode IV: A New Hope

(The Grey Warden lures an impressionable barbarian in hopes of brainwashing him.)

A long time ago (actually just today) in a galaxy far, far away (actually just here)...

The pesky Dark Lord has been in hiding. He manipulates his remaining followers through messengers. Misguided by the Dark Lord's teachings, the less intelligent barbarians believe the Emperor to be evil and his Empire to represent oppression and despair. These poor souls are fighting a rebellious resistance against the Empire in the name of this terrorist. Their futile efforts keep getting beaten back by the overwhelming might of the Roman Legions, but nevertheless the traitorous barbarians keep growing in size and, as a result of Grey Warden backing, power. The Emperor is displeased.

Legatus Kyorgia comes to Emperor Plagentine with a plan. He proposes that the Empire seize 24 of the rebellion's most strategically important strongholds to deliver a crushing blow to their morale and strength. The Emperor agrees to this plan and orders Optio Hired Contractor to assemble a Legion of their finest warriors so they can depart first thing in the morning.

Legatus Kyorgia's ability as a commander impresses all of his troops. Even the Emperor found himself feeling a bit frisky around the man in between their successful sieges. Protected by God himself, the Legion chews through each barbarian stronghold, outclassing the barbarians with their combat ability and skill. The speed and swiftness of each blow is the result of years of practice, experience, and natural gift. It is not until the final stronghold that they encounter any troubling resistance.

It is this final stronghold where the Emperor sees the very coward that has slipped away from him twice before. Crushing the skull of a weak traitor with his boot, the Emperor locks eyes with the Grey Warden. The Emperor remains composed and walks out to meet him among the dead bodies.

"The world has a new hope now," Roavin proclaims while surrounded by the mutilated bodies of his disciples. Ironic. "I give them hope. Rebellions are built on hope."

"Faith placed in the wrong man is worse than no faith at all," the Emperor retorts with his legendary sword, Tito, in hand. "Their lack of faith in my Empire is disturbing, but their faith in you is unforgivable."

"Believe what you will. So many people already believe you are evil and that your Empire is one built on oppression and tyranny. That is their truth. Strike me down now and this rebellion will become stronger than you could ever imagine. It would prove your evil ways to them."

"You underestimate my power, little warden." The Emperor squeezes Tito tighter. "I have the high ground...metaphorically. I have the power, the resources...I have the gods even. Your death will only serve to weaken the rebellion and strike fear into these weak barbarians."

"You know...we're not so different, you and I. We both lead armies. We both have devoted followers. We have charisma and strength. In power all men are the same, but right now only one of us is in power so you carry the burden of being the tyrant. This can be profitable for the both of us. Let me go an-" It is at this moment an arrow flies through the air and strikes the fraud of a Dark Lord in the throat. His face is filled with shock as he falls to his knees. The arrow was fired off by Legatus Festavo The Enigma, who had been observing the exchange while eating jerky.

"A big difference between us is that I will always win," the Emperor declares with a smirk as he approaches the defeaten man. Still breathing and eyes open, the Grey Warden looks up at the Emperor with tears rolling down his cheeks. The Emperor raises his sword and brings it down with force, decapitating the traitor. "I hit with sword and your hope disappears."

Plagentine commences a tactical retreat when a behemoth ghoul appears

Two veteran investigators took out three rookies out on the field to exterminate ghouls in the 6th ward of Tagyo city, two of which were from the allied TI department. Upon arriving to the ghoul hideout they were met with small resistance from low level ghouls that could barely use their predatory organs, and were sufficient training for the newer investigators.

However as the facility was cleared it became obvious that tunnels lead deeper underground into a small system of bunkers, where usually higher ranking ghouls and their officers would take up residence with their bodyguards. The newer investigators were left in the top floor and allowed some resting time as their job was concluded and they would not be able to fight off the ghouls that awaited below.

The duo of older investigators proceeded through the tunnels, and faced several S and SS rate ghouls which put up quite a fight, one even managing to slightly scar an investigators arm. However all of them were exterminated in a timely manner, and the the investigators pressed onward.

But suddenly a tremor was felt as the earth shook slightly, and then a huge burst appeared from the ground.

The behemoth ghoul bursts from the floor and ambushes the roman investigators

The ghoul slashes through concrete and tore apart the bunker system as the duo evaded its fast and powerful strikes, looking for openings in the ghoul's defense. It was impossible to tire out with its immense stamina and incredible strength, and at a few points it seemed like it was finally about to slash the investigators, but with proper teamwork and speed they managed to dance around the slashes and punches just in time.

But the fight would have to end soon if the ghoul was to be defeated, because the two investigators were near the end of their abilities after fighting all those previous ghouls. They attempted a few counter-attacks in order to wound the ghoul's predatory organ and put it down in one precise strike, but every time the ghoul managed to dodge just enough for them to miss by an inch.

After an hour of constantly evading powerful strikes and charging up to put up a fight the investigators had no more energy to fight, and the ghoul managed to knock out one of the investigators against the wall.

Seeing that his comrade was out of the fight and that there was no other alternative, Plagentine decided to put his secret power(tm) to the test. After being cornered he threw his weapon to the ground and made it appear as if he had lost, but at the right moment when the ghoul's guard was down and it launched a full on attack the secret weapon was activated and the ghoul was properly exterminated.

The psychic and his associate enjoying a royal gift as reward for their good work. How did the Empire acquire pineapples? Don't overthink it.

Legatus Festavo The Enigma enters the Throne Room to inform Emperor Plagentine of a visitor.

"We have a psychic here to see you," the dashing Legatus says with a chuckle.

"A psychic?" the Emperor asks, clearly skeptical. "Why is there a psychic here to see me?"

"He claims to have important information about the whereabouts of traitors of the Empire."

"I'm not so sure about this guy, but send him in," the Emperor commands.

The psychic and a companion enter the Throne Room accompanied by two Roman escorts, Legionary The Knights of Julius and Munifex Jacombiny.

"Ave Roma!" the psychic proclaims. "I am very glad that you decided to see me."

"I don't have much time for you today, mystic man," the Emperor replies with a sigh.

"I'll make it quick. I apologize for my manners." The psychic and his companion both bow. "My name is Shawnus Spencericus and this is my associate, Puff Daddy." His companion smiles and waves.

"Tick tock." The Emperor seems annoyed at this point.

"I come here today because I had a vision... a vivid visiony vision from the mystic land!" the psychic shouts with his hands on his temples. "I saw a lot of men...men drinking wine and smiling...they...they..." The psychic collapses to his knees and seems to be in pain. "I see them now! They are colluding against you...against the Empire!"

"Go on," the Emperor commands as he leans back in his throne.

"They are all at the same place...they are together. I see them trying to radicalize others. They are trying to radicalize the rank and file against you. It's a group of officers...greedy officers. They are experiencing success with disloyal troops...they...they...I need a map!"

"Provide him with a map."

"Thank you." The psychic grabs the map and points to a location on said map. "I see them here! This is where they are! They will soon take over this fort and use it as their base of operations against the Empire!"

"One of our strongholds is located here, but it is a secret location. It's very new. How did you know about this?" the Emperor asks after looking at the map.

"I saw it in my vision, my leech. You must act quick if you are to stop them."

"Leech?" his associate asks with a puzzled expression on his face. "I think you mean liege."

"I've heard it both ways."

"Enough!" the Emperor declares as he stands from his throne. "I want those two charlatans removed from my presence now."

"We aren't charlatans!" the psychic shouts as he and his friend are dragged out of the throne room by their escorts.

"I am sorry for bringing those frauds to your attention, my liege," Legatus Festavo says.

"I want you to investigate his claims. They may very well be true."

"Are you sure?" Festavo asks. "They are obviously frauds."

"Can you be so sure? We have seen these rebellions pop up before. Everybody thinks they deserve better and can do better until they are put in the very seat of power they desire. They cannot comprehend or grasp the pressure and responsibility I have to cope with every single day. They would cave in hours if they had to deal with the imbeciles, traitors, and manchilds that I deal with on a daily basis!"

"Don't get started on this again. This is the third time today. I already ordered the execution of the last Munifex to mention a stick."

"You're right. Just go do as I ask and leave me in peace."

The loyal Legatus left the Emperor to ponder life. He dispatched fellow Legatus Kyorgia and Optio Hired Contractor to investigate the psychic's claims of traitors in the Empire's midst.

One week later...

"My liege!" Legatus Festavo shouts as he charges into the Throne Room, interrupting the Emperor sharing wine and suspiciously affectionate banter with Legatus Revall. "I am sorry to interrupt, but Kyorgia and HC just returned to inform me that the mystic man was right. It appears that we do have traitors in our ranks."

"Those bastards," the Emperor responds with disgust as he removes his hand from the noble Legatus' shoulder. "Are they aware that we know?"

"No. They have no idea. We can send Kyorgia and HC back with a small group of men to arrest the traitors if you wish."

"No." The Emperor rises from his throne and finishes his wine. "That is far too kind. We will kill them. All of them. Everybody at that fortress. Not just the men, but the women and children too. We will make an example out of them. If you betray the Empire, you will lose your life along with the lives of those you love."

"Dang fam," Legatus Revall reacts with surprise. "That's a bit harsh."

"Not as harsh as the spanking yo-"

"Let's not, my liege," Festavo interjects.

"Fine. Ready the men. We will make them all pay."

The swiftness of our Roman warriors on the battlefield is faster than the speed of light. Barbarians are continually baffled by the sheer speed of our trained Legionaries and experience jealousy. We understand. There is no shame in that. One team of our finest warriors captured 58 regions last night. Needless to say, every single one of those regions welcomed our presence and now feel that their lives have been enriched since we liberated them from their ignorance and inferiority.
