The NationStates World Fair V (click here for the forum link)

Hello, all. If I know some of you well enough, I know you're probably wondering where the talk of the NS World Fair has been this year. I've received a few TG's and messages from some good nations asking about this, and I just want to let you know I have all intentions to deliver a good fair this year as well. But time is running out.

I served as the chair for the last fair and I think most will agree last year was a solid hit from what we've been expecting from these fairs. This year, I can inform you that many members of the committee are very busy. So busy that they have been difficult to get in touch with - but not all are like that. There have been some members who have been active though, and some who have pledged to help when the time comes, but by and large everyone's busy and we're in short supply. In lieu of this, I wish to appoint temporary committee members to help with this fair. Please feel free to contact me directly if interested - the sooner the better. If we do a good enough job in the short time provided, I wouldn't see why one shouldn't remove the temporary status, so perhaps you'll become a full time bonafide committee member!

Our Current Committee

Todd McCloud, Lamoni, McMasterdonia, Eluvatar, Astarial, Sopo, and Almonaster. Lamoni was added to the committee after a stellar job of hosting the 2015 World Fair.

Any temporary committee members will be announced in this thread and will be placed in this section as well for quick reference.

Important information

This year's NationStates World Fair will be held on the 26 -31st of December. During that time, we will have several different events occurring at a given moment to capture the high energy and fun atmosphere we have enjoyed in past fairs, but with some twists that we hope you will enjoy.

We have decided that we will be opening the NationStates World Fair 2016 to bidding for host regions. The bidding period will be from right now until the 14th of December. The WF Committee will then choose the top five bids, with the voters having the opportunity to pick the winning bid. Given that we are operating on an extremely tight schedule, we will reserve the right to go with a neutral theme if the applications are not up to standard. However, we are confident that we will see many great applications.

In order to apply, please send a telegram to Todd McCloud with the following information;

1. Why does your region want to host the World Fair?
2. What activities/ideas would you like to bring to the WF?
3. What should this years theme for the World Fair be? How would you implement that theme?
4. Any other information we should consider with respect to your region's bid?

A vote will be held from the 14th of December and will last until the 17th of December. So, to recap, this is our current timeframe:
  • Now until Dec. 14th: host bids accepted
  • Dec. 14th - Dec. 17th: vote for a host
  • Dec. 17th - Dec. 24th: host and committee set everything up
  • Dec. 26th - Dec. 31st: the fair is held

What will hosting the World Fair involve?

The NationStates World Fair Committee is looking to expand the involvement of host regions into the operations of the World Fair. Host regions will be responsible for the opening and closing statements of the World Fair. In addition, they will be involved in the set up of the third party forum to be used for the fair. This is a good thing. Finally, the host will have involvement in the organization of the lectures for the NS World Fair, and other games & entertainment ideas for the World Fair 2016.

Regions who wish to submit a detailed application to host the fair should consider the above when making their application.

The Lectures

We will see a return of the very popular lectures of the NationStates World Fair in 2016. Planning is just beginning. If you are interested in giving a lecture, please send a telegram to McMasterdonia. Please provide details about the topic you wish to lecture about and your experience with that particular topic.

The Lecture series will run for the entire duration of the NationStates World Fair, with multiple lectures being given on each particular day. Lectures will be posted by the lecturer on the day which the speaker is slated to speak, and the lecturer will be available in an IRC chat during their lecture slot

Regional Booths

The NationStates World Fair is now open to requests for regional booths. Only regions may submit booths for this event. Please indicate the position you hold within the region, ideally we would prefer that Delegates, Founders, or the equivalent Minister or Head of Government makes the application.

Historical Fairs

More to come.

If a host is selected, The World Fair Committee will be working closely with the host region for the World Fair in the planning of other activities for the fair.

The Lecture Schedule for the World Fair will be announced as soon as possible.

Booths are for regions only. Also, please refrain from tagging.

Also, the fair dates are really... quick. If these dates can't be matched, we may need to extend. The hope was to get a fair in this year, but it will be very tough to do that given the current timeframe. What does everyone think?

You will probably find the main challenge is getting lecturers ready in time and a forum skin in place (you'll probably have to start on the skin before the hosts are chosen.) Lecturers need several weeks to prepare. If you've been arranging lecturers in advance, you'll be fine though.

The Lecture Hall is always the hardest logistical challenge because people overestimate what they can accomplish and they'll back out last minute; it's best to prepare, not just a full schedule of lecturers, but some back-up Q&As and round tables and such to fill holes.

Sign ups for Regional Venues can be started before the host competition is completed. That frees some time up for you as organizers.

The other thing to think about is a NS Sports competition - if you're doing one again like past fairs - you'll want to find an enthusiastic organizer (to scorinate) soon - they'll need a couple of weeks in advance to start up a "sign ups" thread and then develop a order from that. As a tip, although I experimented with wintery themes and such, association football is always the biggest draw with NS Sporters.

Overall, from my experience, I think the advanced timeline is do-able (ish.) It'all be a stretch but the holidays is a great time for a Fair. If you haven't started on organizing lecturers at all, though, my advice would be to delay the Fair to the first weekend of January (like the WF2 was) to give yourself more time on the Lecture Hall front. Good luck?

What do you mean by Activities? Also the OP keeps saying World Fair 2015.

First of all, i'd like to thank the NSWF committee for making me part of the fair staff. It is an honor, and i'll do everything that I can in order to make the fair the best that it can be.

Secondly, as the WA Delegate for Greater Dienstad, I would like to request a booth for my region.

What do you mean by Activities? Also the OP keeps saying World Fair 2015.

Activities vary by the year. Last year featured Regional Booths, the Lecture Hall, various threads for RPers, some sports threads for the NSSports community, an official NSWF IRC channel, and other activities. Activities for the 2016 NSWF will depend on whomever gets elected to host the fair, their vision for it, and what the communities of NS can come up with, as well. That said, there is nothing wrong with suggestions, as well.

Very excited to be working on this :)

A few nations have already expressed interest in lecturing for the World Fair, however if you are interested please get in contact with me ASAP so we can work it into the schedule.

As I mentioned before, I'm happy for the World Fair to have a guest News post to promote it site-wide. It'd be best to have that go up when the fair is starting on the 26th (so you don't get people milling around a closed event), which probably means getting an admin to queue it up in advance as they may be away over Christmas.

That means someone is going to have to get that written and sent to me ideally within the next week. If you've got questions about what to include, tone, or whatever, drop me a TG.

If they end up writing a piece with some history to it, like Gruen's NS Olympics primer, I'd recommend the authors take a look at the History of the NS World Fair article for stuff to pinch. Mind you, I never got around to updating it to include the NS World Fair III or IV - so you're on your own there.
