Yet FPNS is at least a "halfway respectable media organization".

And to the hypocritical argument that Minuliv Messenger doesn't deserve an award since they've only posted a couple times recently and once in January... CAIN only became popular in the latter part of the latter half of the year, so the argument that Brinhilde is the most influential and that the best thread is CAIN directly conflicts your "petty" insulting of The Miniluv Messenger.

I don't really see the value in comparing an interregional, cross-spectrum coalition of literal hundreds of people brought together largely by the willpower of one person and her allies, united against a dangerous and genocidal ideology, to a former dictator's propaganda outlet. It's almost insulting to Brunhilde to suggest that her efforts don't amount to anything more than GP's most active spin outlet.

And no, FPNS is definitely not respectable in terms of actual journalism... my vote was half because of how Todd doesn't take himself seriously and also to prove a point that GP newspapers are in decline. I miss the Rejected Times. The comparisons you're trying to draw are a non-starter.

Least there was diversity in authorship. TRT lasted many years with different people.

If you're upset that there is bias in a Gameplay newspaper..

Go back to answering issues.

Apparently people are far too idealistic about the elimination of bias in news publication. Once again, NS is a microcosm of RL where no news source is truly unbiased.

But nooo! The editors and we authors get accused of bias all the time. Just go and have a gander of the unusual issue results megathread. smh

After a few folks asked me to, I agreed to tally the public votes for each category. Notes on methodology - I did not throw out any entire public votes, just invalid answers at the end of the tally, and I only took the time to do this once, so it may be off 1 or 2 numbers if I fucked up anywhere.

Most Influential Gameplayer: Despite strong showings by raider Yuno and reigning champion in this category Cormac, the award for "Most Influential Gameplayer" goes to... Brunhilde!

quickedit: tight categories included "Most Influential Gameplayer"

Public:
Brun - 30
Yuno - 16
Cormac - 7
BT - 5
Pier - 4
Elu - 1

Best Raider: A fierce battle between Ever-Wandering Souls, Yuno, and T E Lawrence (Knot) ensued in this race, as the other candidates quickly fell behind. A strong start by Ever-Wandering Souls suddenly gave way to Yuno and T E Lawrence (Knot) after two days, and these two fought all the way until the finish line. The winner of the category "Best Raider" is... T E Lawrence (Knot)!

quickedit: tight categories included ... "Best Raider"

Public:
Yuno and Souls - 24
Knot - 6
NSA - 4
DK and Scar - 3

Best Defender: Last year's "Best Defender" Benevolent Thomas held off a noteworthy challenge by Roavin, a new face of defending, while the rest of the candidates could not match. The winner of the category "Best Defender" is... Benevolent Thomas!

Public:
BT - 29
Roavin - 21
Tim - 7
Altmoras - 6

Best Up-and-Coming Raider: Just like in its mother category, three candidates (Tom Vasentius, Sygian, and Yuno) quickly rose above all the others. A race between Tom Vasentius and Sygian went right to the end, but only one came out on top. The award for the category "Best Up-and-Coming Raider" goes to... Tom Vasentius!

Public:
Yuno - 23
Tom - 17
Sygian -11
Snow - 8
Vetelo - 3
Rai -1

Best Up-and-Coming Defender: We have a slightly more legitimate contest this year for this category -- no raiders nominated! In a blow-out victory against other highly qualified individuals, the winner of "Best Up-and-Coming Defender" is... Roavin!

quickedit: tight categories included ... "Best Up-and-Coming Raider"

Public:
Roavin - 25
Altmoras - 23
Drake - 8
Teru - 3

Best Invader Organization: Two of the largest raiding organizations, The Black Hawks (last year's winner in this category) and The Invaders, were beaten to the crown this year by a dark horse. No, it wasn't Hydra Command. No, it wasn't Firehelm. The award for "Best Invader Organization" goes to... Lone Wolves United!

quickedit: tight categories included ... "Best Invader Organization"

Public:
TBH - 20
Hydra - 11
LWU, TGW, and TI - 9
Firehelm - 2

Best Defender Organization: Despite a small challenge from The South Pacific Special Forces, the golden award for "Best Defender Organization" goes wholly to... The Grey Wardens!

Public:
TGW -36
SPSF - 14
RIASF and Solidarity - 3

Invasion of the Year: Although the significance is apparent in all nominated raids, the breadth of organization behind-the-scenes involved in the top invasion is incontestable. The award for "Invasion of the Year" goes to... The NSIA!

Public:
NSIA - 28
SLU - 8
Big Banks - 7
Dank Memes and Osiris - 5
Heroes Rise - 3
Blackout - 2

Liberation of the Year: While the liberations of this year were not as large-scale as those of last year, which included Lazarus, they are nonetheless significant The winner of the award "Liberation of the Year" goes to... Singapore!

Public:
Singapore - 33
Eternal Scholars - 11
Belgium - 9
Hippiedom - 3

Gameplay Thread of the Year: A race between the CAIN and The Invaders commenced, but only one came out on top. The winner of "Gameplay Thread of the Year" is... CAIN!

quickedit: tight categories included ... "Gameplay Thread of the Year"

Public:
Cain - 28
Predator - 14
Neutral Ground, Grand Central, and TI - 6

Best Gameplay Newspaper: While all publications nominated are renowned for their quality reporting and editing, the winner of "Best Gameplay Newspaper" is... The Miniluv Messenger!

quickedit: tight categories included ... "Best Gameplay Newspaper"

Public:
Hell's Bells - 18
Miniluv - 12
TRT and FPNS - 9
NFTF - 3

Biggest Meltdown of the Year: The unequivocal winner of "Biggest Meltdown of the Year" is... DoS Players!

quickedit: tight categories included ... "Biggest Meltdown of the Year".

Public:
Scieca (may have been grouped into DOS?) - 15
Osiris - 13
94 Block - 11
DoS - 7
USSD - 6

Quote of the Year: "Don't shitpost." (Sedgistan)

Public:
Reppy - 31
Sedge - 25
Souls - 4

Noteworthy Event of the Year: Almost unanimously agreed to be significant across multiple spectra of NationStates, the winner of "Noteworthy Event of the Year" is... The Predator Scandal!

Public:
Predator - 46
Rep. Con. Pacific - 11

Quick analysis: 7 votes have a perfect match between what was described and the public vote. 3 votes were different than the public vote, but were close enough that it's nothing weird given a decent volume of TG votes. 5 votes had a significant change from the public vote - Best Raider's winner overcame being 18 public votes behind to win, Best Up and Coming raider was a race between Tom and Syg, who were both a good chunk behind Yuno (moreso for syg), Best defender up and coming was a "blowout" for Roavin, while he was only two ahead of Altmoras in the public vote, Best Invader Org had to make up 11 votes behind, and best thread was publicly a blowout for CAIN, but reported as a close race between them and another option that was publicly in a tie for third, 22 votes off the lead.

An interesting Telegramed vote occurred indeed.

Hope some of y'all enjoy that hour of work :P

EDIT: A sixth discrepancy has been pointed out to me - Cormac was noted as a strong showing in Most Influential, while publicly sitting in a very distant (23 vote) third. That one could just be semantics on behalf of the OP though.

Having so many large discrepancies makes me think the unknown OP could have taken some liberties. Personally I consider the public voting results as the true results. But i'm excessively paranoid and half insane, so... yea.

Thanks for adding that all up EWS, I was actually thinking of doing that myself.

o/

More likely a group or groups "encouraged" members to go vote, mixed with some disqualified votes.

On that note, If we're being technical, as I noted my numbers aren't quite true, because any vote with a non-valid entry should have been entirely discarded as per the rules, while I ran a mass tally and then just didn't bother reporting invalid entries. That said, there was at most five or six folks with a mix of valid and invalid entries, and those didn't follow any specific pattern - that is to say, removing them would not have singlehanded caused any major swings. I just forgot about removing them until I was like 80% of the way through counting and didn't want to go back :P If you wanted to try that, just go find which entries has invalid components (mostly looking for "zaolat's," but also a knot vote in UnC R, A tom vote in UnC defender, A TI vote in defender org, a nasicornia and singapore vote in Invasion, A dank memes vote in libs, an osi vote in Thread, and a HANN vote in news) and subtract any valid entries those had from my totals. That'd legally be the public vote.

I think it's more likely that someone encouraged a large group of people to vote for a preferred ballot, or at least a few preferred people/things, by telegram. I don't know that the OP would go to all this trouble just to insert his own preferences as the winners, but I guess weirder wastes of time in this game have happened...
