How do they figure it out?

Postby Venetoland » Wed Jan 20, 2010 10:51 pm

Most regions have literally thousands of nations.

National rankings are a direct result of nations' stats, as affected by Issues and World Assembly resolutions. So (for example) if you make issue decisions that improve your environment, you will go up in Most Beautiful and down in Most Polluted. If you're a WA member and a General Assembly resolution gets passed that protects the environment, this too will move your ranking in those areas. There are dozens of different stats and rankings, so you may rank very high (or low) in some areas but not be particularly notable in others.

There are a few exceptions to this rule. Most Influential is determined by a complicated mixture of endorsements, history, and region size that most players needn't be concerned with. Largest Nations is determined by your population, which is to say simply the amount of time you've been in the game.
I wish I remember who wrote:Games like Nationstates are like a big cardboard box, and there are two kinds of people in the world. The kind who look at the empty void inside the box and ask "Where the hell is it?" and the kind who jump into the box with their friends and make it into a fort, or a spaceship.

You jump, no question. A lot of people have the same environment, or influence, or population, as you.

There's no earthly way of knowing
Which direction we are going
There's no knowing where we're rowing
Or which way the river's flowing

Is it raining? / Is it snowing?
Is a hurricane a-blowing?
Not a speck of light is showing
So the danger must be growing
Are the fires of hell a-glowing?

Is the grisly reaper mowing?
Yes, the danger must be growing
'Cause the rowers keep on rowing
And they're certainly not showing
Any signs that they are slowing!

Only 6 regions (TP, TNP, TSP, TEP, TWP, Lazarus) have over a thousand nations. Six out of six thousand is not most. ;)

MOST regions probably have 15-40 nations. (It'd be cool if this was averaged.)

The world contains 52,958 nations in 6,297 regions. <<<< Means 8.4 nations per region on average.
