I believe they spoke some earlier form of Russian, that or some proto-East-Slavic.
Basically what happens when you throw Germanic raiders in a blender with Romans and give them a few centuries to form their own culture.

You say you want a Russian sounding name. I made a nation called Kraciva, based off the Russian word for "beauty," "красивая." And you want something environmental-ish, so what if you look at the Russian words for "green" or "trees" or "forests" and work off of that?
