What exactly makes the economy of a NS Nation good?

I'm not too good at politics. Basically speaking, when I play NS, I choose the issue solution that I personally like best. It's to the point it may not seem all that realistic - for example, free education for all while we also have universal health care at the same exact time..lol.

I was wondering, what exactly makes the economy good or bad within an NS nation? Would anyone have an idea? I feel like I just happened to luck up with my issues and some how the economy just happens to be very well.
