Last year, our region embarked on a new chapter of its history. A pillar of the Imperialist world abdicated and became Emperor Emeritus. I, as Crown Prince, stepped in to carry on his work and lead the region as the Emperor of the LKE.

Since then, a lot has change. Both home and abroad, surprises and challenges continued to test LKE’s resolve. We had to say a difficult goodbye to our old forum and search for a new home for our community. Old foes continued to malign us while new ones have emerged to challenge us. Alliances were tested. The previous year was not an easy transition. I myself know this, as circumstances beyond control have deprived me of fulfilling my regular duties for the most part of the second half of 2018.

Notwithstanding these, loyal Electors chose to rally behind the Golden Eagle and work harder to protect the peace of our community and bring it to a new age of prosperity. Senior members and newer players alike came together and proved to the world that the legacy of Imperialism we inherited carries on. It remains alive in each and every one of you and that is what will always make the LKE strong and a force to reckon with.

Today as we celebrate beginnings, renewals, I am pleased to recognize the Electors who went above and beyond the call to serve the LKE. Individuals who demonstrated loyalty, passion and an unwavering faith in our community. Please join me in congratulating the following Electors:

First, I award the Crown Prince Linkin Maximus the Order of Dynasty. The undeniable work Crown Prince Linkin rendered as Prince Regent during my absence ensured the responsibilities of the Monarchy were fulfilled and the region was with a steady leadership. He and the other members of the Imperial House as well as the Lord High Steward have my gratitude. I find great comfort in knowing that as I assume full activity as Emperor again, I will continue to have them as friends, advisers and confidants.

Second, an Elector is raised to the regional peerage. Julio of Nulkia-Sova has steadily risen to the ranks, proving both competence and commitment. He has served in a multitude of senior roles both in the executive and legislative branches of the Imperial Government, among which are stints as a Former Prime Minister of the Land of Kings and Emperors and President of the Imperial Senate. His continuing involvement in affairs of state and various contributions in the military, roleplay and the World Assembly clearly qualify him for the highest levels of recognition. He is created the Baron of Haifa.

Our current Prime Minister, John Spencer-Churchill has done fantastic work in managing the transition of the community into our new forums and overseeing domestic activity. He has led the charge into new cultural pursuits, such as roleplays in Hedingham and the housing districts, reprioritized the World of the LKE and brought forth legislation reforming the University. He has also been most helpful in strengthening our linkages with our allies and partners. The Prime Minister is created a Knight of the Most Perfect Order of Ortho.

Rayregalia von Arcadia has proven himself to be a truly loyal and dedicated member of the LKE. Having served in a number of top positions, from Governor-General of the Land of Dragonia to Minister of Culture and Private Secretary of the Emperor, Rayregalia has been key in securing priority government objectives and helping anyone whenever he can. He too is active in the cultural scene, having participated in various regional roleplays, the University and public discussions. He is awarded the Order of Achievement.

Lastly, but certainly not the least Holy Queen Erica may be a relatively new face but she has become one of our most active roleplayers. Her posts support the cultural goals of the Imperial government and help generate activity within the community. For her continuing work and support of domestic efforts, she is therefore awarded the Order of Achievement.

As we march into the new year, I call on each and every Elector to continue dedicating themselves to the glory of the LKE. No matter what challenge may come along our way, we will always prevail!

Imperial Succession Day

On the 8th of January, one year ago, a new Emperor acceded to the throne. To commemorate this momentous occasion, we gathered to congratulate His Supreme Majesty on a successful, if slightly turbulent, first year of reign. His Supreme Majesty gave an encouraging speech to the Electors and chose to honour the worthiest among them. His Supreme Highness Crown Prince Linkin Maximus received the Order of the Dynasty for his wise stewardship of the Empire, which he accepted with his usual gravitas and honour. In addition, His Supreme Majesty awarded many of the most noble and honored subjects of the realm. The assembled crowds cheered raucously for Julio of Nulkia-Sova, John Spencer-Churchill, Rayregalia von Arcadia, and Erica Wilhelmina von Claire as their efforts were given their due. Long may they all serve the Empire with such loyalty and skill! The Emperor’s noble words remind us all that through devotion to the LKE, we may all achieve great things. The LKE remains ours, for we have the valour and strength to keep it!

An Anglo Adventure No.2


The City of London

On December 22nd, Prime Minister John Spencer-Churchill announced that the LKE will be participating in a State Visit to the United Kingdom in the following week. The Land of Kings and Emperors and United Kingdom have been allies since the Treaty of Argyll was first ratified in 2014, and we have been friends long before that. As soon as the LKE delegation arrived, the Prime Minister and the Crown Prince were formally welcomed by the UK Prime Minister. Early on day two the Prime Minister met privately with HM King Edward X and the UK Prime Minister, while in the evening a State Banquet took place in Buckingham Palace in honour of the LKE delegation. On day three the Prime Minister met once more with the UK Prime Minister and discussed in more detail plans for future cooperation between the two regions.

Our congratulations to the UK Government for the well-organised State Visit that helped strengthen the regional ties with our friends at the United Kingdom and layed the foundation for closer future co-operation in all matters.

Roleplay Initiative


The World of the LKE

The Foreign Broadcasting Service is pleased to announce that the Regional Map of the Land of Kings and Emperors is now available for view by the public. A staggering 12 feet by 10 feet in its full glory, the masterpiece now hangs in the Map Room of the Council of Rulers Headquarters such that all who visit will know the breadth of territory under His Supreme Majesty’s command. The map is the creation of dozens of the finest artists, surveyors, and geographers in the Empire, whose tireless labor enriches us all. The Ministry of the Culture wishes to dedicate the map to His Supreme Majesty Theoden Sebastian, in the hopes that through shared knowledge, our lands may seem as close in space as they do in the bonds of filial spirit. 

In addition, the Ministry of Culture is proud to announce the creation of the “Allied Mandate” program. For the first time, diplomats to the LKE may engage in the Role-Playing activities of the Empire. Your contributions have long brought vibrancy to our lands and we hope to see them continue to do so.

The Kelkia School of Law has founded the first academy of Juristic Science in the LKE. Scholars, professors, and students of every realm may come together to share in a rich exchange of legal discourse. The Program Director, Sir John Spencer-Churchill, invites all to apply for the Bachelor of Laws program. Graduates of this program will receive a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) accreditation. Please direct any questions about the program to the Program Director.

Further demonstrating the peerless scholarship of the Empire, The University of the Land of Kings and Emperors is now accepting submissions for academic work on a variety of matters religious, historical, or otherwise. Members are free to submit transcripts of lectures, excerpts of scholarly works, and other research materials to encourage the free exchange of ideas and emergence of truth.

Lastly, the Hapsburg Library is soliciting donations of distinctive artifacts for their permanent collection. Material culture can provide a window into the psyche of even the most inscrutable peoples, and the Empire would most certainly prosper through the sharing of any such treaures. Generosity is its own reward, but your donations will make the Library the envy of lesser nations. Physical materials will be handled gently by teams of highly trained archaeologists.

The "Perpetual" Senate

The past term has seen the continuation of the impressive legislative activity of the Imperial Senate. This term, the Imperial Senate has voted on a plethora of new laws sponsored by the governing Lion Party. The new laws either enhance our community from a cultural prespective or introduce reforms to the governing mechanism of our region. On the cultural scene, the Imperial Court Act (2018) introduces a unique-themed Court system that we believe will enrich the unique culture of our region, while the Housing Act (2018) aims to exploit to the potential of the Housing District.

On the political scene, the Imperial Senate passed a series of amendments to the Constitution that reform a part of the executive branch and add clarity to the fundamental legal document of our region. Specifically, Article V, which describes the executive branch, was amended in order to add more clarity and amend the grey areas of the law. Secondly, another amendment to the said article re-established the Sentinel Council as an advisory body to the Prime Minister.

Imperial Reclamation Day



His Supreme Majesty Emperor Theoden observed Imperial Reclamation Day with an address to the Electors of the LKE on 5th June. Imperial Reclamation Day was on 29th May but celebrations were deferred until 5th June, so that they would occur following the vote on the condemnation resolution. Seven years ago, on 29th May 2012, the Imperial Army reclaimed The United Kingdom of Britain, then home to the community of the former LKE colony United Kingdom of Britain, from an occupation by the Nazi region The Greater German Reich. Imperial Reclamation Day marks this occasion.

In line with tradition, the Emperor used his Imperial Reclamation Day speech to confer imperial peerages, honours and appointments. The most consequential of the titles and appointments bestowed were:

Akillian Talleyrand to succeed Linkin Maximus as Crown Prince and first in line to the Imperial Crown;

Valfor Talleyrand to succeed Akillian as Prince Imperial and second in line to the Imperial Crown.

After a distinguished LKE career which began in October 2006, second in duration only to His Imperial Majesty the Emperor Emeritus, Linkin Maximus is unable to continue as Crown Prince at this time for real-life reasons. Commenting on Linkin's service, His Supreme Majesty the Emperor stated:

Linkin Maximus has been one of the most loyal and successful statesmen of the LKE. He is one of a handful of electors who have been part of and contributed actively to the LKE during the early and modern epochs of its history. Regrettably, due to prevailing real life circumstances, he is unable to continue serving as Crown Prince. While we wait for his return, we recognize his exemplary work as heir to the throne and wider contributions to the region through many years of dutiful service. Linkin Maximus is hereby created the Duke of Quintington in accordance with Letters Patent CXCXII.

Annnouncing his choice of Akillian Talleyrand as Crown Prince, His Supreme Majesty stated:

Selecting the Crown Prince is a unique privilege and great responsibility for the Emperor. The individual must be able to represent the tenets of the LKE and of Imperialism, must have proven leadership skills, a clear record of commitment and loyalty to our region and a vision which will inspire and motivate the people around him. I am grateful to Akillian Talleyrand because I need not look further. He has all the necessary qualities, even exceeding them, which makes him immensely worthy of the role. Akillian has served in the pinnacle of the three branches of our government. He headed executive branch as Prime Minister, served in the legislative branch through multiple terms as a senator and member of the estate noble and as current Lord Chancellor, heads our judiciary. Aside from these positions, his talent and strong worth ethic landed him in senior roles in other regions including Arda en Estel and United Kingdom, where he reigns as King Edward X. These establish beyond any doubt that Akillian will perform excellently as Crown Prince and will be ready to discharge the supreme duties of the LKE Crown in case of my resignation or demise. Akillian Talleyrand is created His Supreme Highness, the Crown Prince of The Land of Kings and Emperors by virtue of Letters Patent CXCXIII. The Crown Prince shall continue to enjoy the Archdukedom of Maxonberg in addition to his princely title and will remain Lord Chancellor. This restores the previous practice of having the Crown Prince serve as Lord Chancellor.

Announcing his choice of Valfor Talleyrand as Prince Imperial, His Supreme Majesty stated:

The elevation of Crown Prince Akillian leaves a key position in the Imperial House vacant. Fortunately, we have the man to fill in the vacancy. Valfor Talleyrand is created Prince Imperial and Archduke of Vienna in accordance with Letters Patent CXCXIV. Since joining The LKE on August 09, 2011, Valfor has risen through the ranks thanks to his talent, vision and dedication to our community. He has enjoyed successful and multiple stints as Prime Minister, Secretary of State, legislator and guardian counselor. Aside from being granted two of the three most senior imperial orders, he was created as the first duke in the modern epoch not to have served as a prince prior to being granted the ducal coronet. With his extensive political background and experience, the new Prince Imperial will be able to represent and coordinate the positions of the Crown and guide the Imperial government in its day to day administration of the region. In addition to his becoming Prince Imperial, Valfor is appointed as the new Chief of the Imperial General Staff. Having served in senior military roles including Commander of the Habsburg Infantry Division of the Imperial Army and LKE Division Commander under the United Imperial Armed Forces, Valfor has the skills and experience necessary to plan and execute strategic military objectives. In the coming days, I will be discussing with him fresh appointments to the Imperial Command as well as wider service promotions. He likewise takes over the Duke of Quintington as Imperial Law Librarian.

A Statement on the Incident that took place on The Land of Kings and Emperors Forum and Discord Server on August 17th

The Imperial Government wishes to provide notification of a serious incident affecting the Imperial Forums and the LKE Regional Discord server on the morning of August 17th. Three junior members of the government abused their moderator powers on the Imperial Forums to alter and destroy content. In place of the previously existing content, in a number of cases they inserted highly inappropriate and offensive content. Simultaneously its members spammed insulting and inappropriate messages on the LKE Discord server.

The three perpetrators of this incident were Edgar Jorgmund Kjærsgaard III (also known as Droiden), Sarkos Tunchix IV (also known as South Reinkalistan) and Adrian Willzhelm (also known as Greater Bastion). In subsequently seeking to justify their actions, these members and their sympathisers complained about what they perceive as restrictive moderation policies on the LKE Discord. This followed occasions where the members concerned and their associates had been warned over a number of matters, including offensive comments and inappropriate jokes, advertising for non-LKE servers and the excessive use of profanities on our Discord server. In addition to the administrative team, multiple ordinary members of the LKE had been offended and disturbed by their behaviour, with some members even leaving to avoid them. The LKE's administrative team is under an obligation to ensure that the LKE is a safe and welcoming community. In taking action to sanction such conduct, the LKE's moderation approach was at all times reasonable and proportionate. In any case, even if our moderation policies were too severe, vandalising the LKE's forums could still only be considered unacceptable.

Immediately following the incident, the members concerned shamelessly bragged about their behaviour on our regional message board, making a number of offensive posts suppressed by the NationStates moderators. They then created a temporary region called the "Placeholder Land of Placeholders", in which they were joined by a number of their close associates and friends including Novae Romae and Asurmenia. Very shortly after this group established New Roman Imperium as their new region.

In a gameplay thread created by New Roman Imperium soon after, its members subsequently sought to donwplay their region's connection to the above events. Without referring to his own major role in the incident, Sarkos Tunchix IV/South Reinkalistan described what happened as "a travesty that all of the nations who partook in the act regret". This lacks all credibility. Within the 15-nation region of New Roman Imperium, Edgar Jorgmund Kjærsgaard III/Droiden is the World Assembly Delegate, Adrian Willzhelm/Greater Bastion is Minister of Regional Affairs and Sarkos Tunchix IV/South Reinkalistan is Minister of Internal Security. As well as holding high office, all three individuals are integral members of the core group which co-founded the region directly after they destroyed content and vandalised the LKE forums. In the immediate aftermath, all its members were fully aware of what had transpired. Yet they all chose to set up a new region with these three individuals as core members. Far from being a distinct entity, New Roman Imperium is effectively a continuation of the political party and role-play group comprising the members of the LKE who defected to New Roman Imperium. The party was led by Adrian Willzhelm/Greater Bastion.

On any objective standard, New Roman Imperium has the purpose and effect of supporting the three individuals who left and were banned from the LKE after they destroyed our content and posted inappropriate content on our platforms. The region provides shelter for those individuals without any period of banishment or exclusion, elevating them directly to the highest offices. New Roman Imperium holds a high degree of corporate responsibility for the events of August 17th. The LKE accordingly will not allow any player in New Roman Imperium to reside within our region. In view of their conduct, we also request that other regions decline to open relations with New Roman Imperium if they are approached with a request to do so.

We note with great disappointment that a small number of regions have already initiated construction of in-game embassies with New Roman Imperium, despite public discussion of the circumstances in the Gameplay forum and the wide audience gained by the dispatch released by our chief administrator. The regions forming in-game embassies with New Roman Imperium include The Empire of Mare Nostrum, another region which splintered from the LKE (but by comparison did not destroy content or post inappropriate content while doing so). The destruction of forum content represents a threat to the off-site infrastructure of all NationStates regions and communities. Especially so soon after the incident concerned, the LKE believes that the systematic destruction of content and posting of inappropriate content should not be overlooked and dismissed, regardless of any gameplay disagreements which might exist.

Balder is appalled at the actions of these individuals and of the region that harbours them. Their actions were disproportionate and totally unacceptable, and we stand by the Land of Kings and Emperors and the action that they took. We are pleased to see that order has been restored and that the culprits have been properly identified.

We note with disdain the support given to them by other regions and hope that these regions will reconsider their stance in light of the events that occurred. We will continue to support our allies in the Land of Kings and Emperors, and hope that the perpetrators will eventually be brought to justice.

As one of the nations that left the LKE over the behaviour of the people mentioned above, I can concur that the events described in the above post are true. During my stay with this region, several of the nations/names mentioned by Cunaris had expressed viewpoints that caused me to be severely dismayed. Not only did they call people who are LGBT mentally ill, they proceeded to justify why they believed LGBT'ers - in particular transgender people - indeed were mentally ill according to them and why society should consider them mentally ill. Asurmenia was one of the nations that provided the most radical view on their belief that transgender people should be considered mentally ill and should receive treatment for it, not to accept themselves or to change their body to who they feel they are, but to cure them of their supposed defect in their mind and make them "normal" again. Sarkos in turn proceeded to made very denigrating remarks, and I quote, "if you don't know what gender you are, look between your legs", which shows a strong lack of empathy for people who might struggle with their gender identity. I am writing this not to throw mud on the members of the New Roman Imperium. My intent is to join in with the message posted by Cunaris to warn people what type of people are in that region's leadership and what views they hold. If I have gone too far and this will be considered as "calling out", then I will accept that. However, in this particular situation, I strongly believe transparency is necessary, especially so that new players looking at the New Roman Imperium will be aware of what they are entering. That is the sole motivation behind this post/reply.

Simultaneously, I must commend the leadership of the LKE for their reaction to the events that transpired on the 17th of August, but also for how they responded to the incident I have just described. The LKE leadership was quick to condemn the viewpoints expressed by Sarkos, Asurmenia and their friends, stating that anyone coming to the LKE should feel safe and comfortable, regardless of their background. It is why they deemed it unacceptable that such views had been expressed by the previously mentioned nations, which is a commendable course of action. No one should be called mentally ill for something that they can't change about themselves nor should they have to. It is also why I express my praise for the LKE, for the fact they are public about the events that transpired on the 17th of August. As stated before, in this particular situation, the utmost level of transparency is vitally important.

The forum destruction undertaken by these players is reprehensible, especially considering that the damage was in retaliation for being moderated for their transphobic behavior. I join with others in asking all regions to cease diplomatic contact with New Roman Imperium, founded by and harboring these individuals who have who have embraced actions of hate and forum destruction.

I was sorry to hear about the malicious acts of off-site property destruction perpetrated by these individuals. I may not see eye to eye with The Land of Kings and Emperors over in-character matters, but gameplayers should be united in condemning malicious acts of off-site property destruction.

It's disturbing and disheartening to see The Empire of Mare Nostrum constructing embassies with New Roman Imperium. I hope they'll reconsider.
