Things are looking up between Defenders and the NPO because the NPO, casting about for a cause with which to stay relevant, has randomly decided to target Imperialists.
Never underestimate the power of cynicism, pessimism and negativity to prevent terrible things from happening. Only idealists try to build the future on a mountain of bodies.

The Thing to Remember About NationStates is that it is an almost entirely social game - fundamentally, you have no power beyond your own ability to convince people to go along with your ideas. In that sense, even the most dictatorial region is fundamentally democratic.

Today is the second anniversary of the United Defenders League!

Chief of the Band Mahaj prepared the following speech.



Friends, Merrymen, lend me your ears.

Today marks the second anniversary of the opening of the United Defenders League. For two years now we have done all in our power to fight the scourge of invaders everywhere, to protect communities at risk. For two years we have succeeded, and we have become one of the best defending organizations in NationStates, a force that even the most hardened of invader is forced to, when push comes to shove, respect.

There are speeches that I will give dedicated to showing the horrors of invading, to showing the blackened nature of those who engage in invading. This is not one of them. No, this speech is instead about the people that make the United Defenders League among the best, the people that save communities, the people that cause me to get telegrams thanking me for our work, the people that give fits to invaders from all across the globe. These people are the UDL merrymen, and on this second anniversary of the United Defenders League, it is time for them to get the recognition they deserve.

Every day, when I get telegrams seeking help, I do my very best to make sure to reply to all of them. I am continually astounded by the number of people who are surprised that I took the time and energy to respond to their queries. Many say they did not expect the head of a defender organization to have the time to do this. However I think that the fact that I do this shows the mentality that I have, and furthermore that the UDL has as well: the individual soldier is important as well. The UDL cannot be successful without the individual soldier fully contributing. My goal, as Chief of the Band, is to ensure that the merrymen are respected and listened to, so that both they and the UDL can thrive.

Soon a survey will be telegrammed out to the UDL ranks. I ask that each merryman take this survey, so that I can improve the UDL. The survey is anonymous, but you may put your nation name if you like. If you do so, I will contact you to address any concerns that you have. The well being of the UDL is my number one priority, and sometimes I get so involved in it that it is hard to see a better solution to our current issues. It is why I need every merryman to complete this survey, so that soon the UDL won’t be celebrating two years, but twenty.

Thank you to the merrymen who have stuck with the UDL and made innumerable contributions. Your contributions, your commitment to the UDL, your desire to help NationStates, are the things that help keep me going.

Here’s to another great year for the UDL!
