Flag advice super thread

There's something I don't like about my flag. I could not tell what is it, though. What do you guys think?

It's small, which makes it hard to tell what's up in the crest, but I'd recommend one (or both) of two things, just to see what's up: try shrinking the crest so that you have more white space to either side of it, and try increasing the height of the flag slightly; a ratio like 3:2 might work.

Generally not a good idea. Try simplifying instead. In particular...

Use fewer colours. Ideally no more than 3. Blue and green don't work well as adjacent colours.

Use fewer symbols, ideally just 1 or possibly 2.

Don't use writing. If you want to convey numbers, use a relevant pattern.


Using your current elements, one option might be: A blue or green background, 16 gold disks arranged one either side or all around the periphery, 10 gold or orange claws arranged in the centre.

I wouldn't suggest adding more elements if you want to keep the animal as a focus point.
As it is, your flag has an overall good design, complexity isn't always a good thing, especially with a flag.
I put up the flag of Japan, Canada, or France as an example of this.

Edit: something you could consider is the color of the stripes. Lower saturations look better on white, and will put more attention on your animal.

I like it overall, but I feel that the design around the nail and gear is a little too complicated, and it's hard to see the details.

I agree with pencil sharpeners.

I also thing your colour choices aren't quite ideal. I would recommend a slightly brighter blue - just enough to make it clearly different from the black - and a much brighter red. The top of the logo gets lost against the black background. That might help a bit with the detailing, too.

That looks much better than your current one, primarily because the gold/yellow provides a cleaner contrast to the black and dark blue than does the red. Meanwhile the red in the middle and the sharp black lines of your sheaves contrast well against the white. Very nice.

That looks good too. My personal preference would be the red and gold centre, just because the shape of the middle part makes it look like the white bits are invading the coloured bars, rather than just being overlaid. Purely aesthetic, though.

I use Inkscape, which is a free, high-quality vector graphics program. I find it quite good for both flags (some flags I've made with it) and other things such as maps, paper money, logos, etc. (some other things I've made).

What's up guys? I've just finished my coat of arms and I'm somewhat iffy about the overall design now that is placed on my flag. So I'd like some feedback from you guys.
