Whatever happened to the 'Free Republic' category? While browsing the internet archive I came across an early edition of NS, and even though the nation creation function didn't quite work, I could still fill out the form. There were some other categories for the country I can't remember, but you could call your nation the Free Republic of @@NAME@@. Any reason why it's not here anymore?

Let's out-nitpick that: there are moments when the update order changes. That's when it is possible for a region which updated at the end of the prior update to update next time at the beginning of the update. For a while update order was even randomized so this happened all the time. This cuts it down to closer to 11 hours. Then there are the update errors: an update that is started an hour or more later than it was supposed to. Or back in the old days... an update which lasted close to 24 hours and had to be killed off because the next one was about to start (updates were 24 hours apart back then).

Do you haver a link for that? I cannot find any reference to "Free Republic" in our codebase history. Perhaps it was from a time before the current NS code versioning log (March 2004).

No Free Republic actually, must have been thinking of something else. But there are two categories that aren't here now, Sultanate and Holy Republic. Any idea why?

Sultanate is still an active category, it's in the list.

On May 15, 2009, "Holy Republic" was removed and both "Matriarchy" and "United Kingdom" were added to the list.
No record was made as to why, but a likely reason is overlap with "Holy Empire" and simply "Republic".

Actually, I just found Free Republic. It's all the way back from 2002, so there might not be any logs of it, but as of November 25, 2002, there was a Free Republic.

Who holds the record for longest run as head or leader of a region? As in Delegate, President, etc. only counting regions with at least some activity and several participants. Also would be interested to count any with only brief interruptions to their premiership.

I think it would be better to ask off the top of your head which players have done the most to help out the NS community? You might want to be specific though if you're referring to gameplay.

I think everyone would give a different answer. I'd say it's the people who have helped the communities of NS keep going who have done the most good. For me that would be people like Northern Chittowa in the GRA, who even when he's been bored of NS and has stopped playing makes sure he logs in every few days to ensure the community has what it needs. All the long lasting communities of NS have one or more people like that, many don't get recognition outside those communities.

Actually, I think NewTexas may really be first. Some years back there was a glitch during update that lead to quite a few nations losing their delegacy. If I recall the story correctly, NewTexas lost his, but gained it back the following update.

I know this is a vague question, but I can't find a better way to phrase it..

Afforess got deleted a while ago, but I'd say he's arguably a huge contributor. He created the immensely useful tool NS++ and spent a lot of time and money on it, as well as creating a new NSwiki, which unfortunately doesn't seem to be making any progress.

Aside from that there's Hobbes, who hosts forums for multiple regions with his own money as well as creating RadioNS, a short-lived internet radio station playing great tunes and talking about NS-wide events.

That's only in recent memory, though. I joined in early 2013. If we're talking about the most influential nations of all time, I've heard that Francos Spain basically started everything.
