[DEFEATED] Commend Shizensky Prime

Postby Apatosaurus » Tue Feb 22, 2022 1:48 pm

Hi, I'm aware that I have an iffy history here in SC. That said, this commendation is long overdue, and I've been sitting on this for a few months now. Feedback is appreciated :D

To give credit where it's due, thanks to Acronius, Benevolent Thomas, Deadeye Jack, Eist, Emodea, Giovanniland, Grea Kriopia, Hakketomat, HumanSanity, Jute, Morover, Tangaroan Islands, Thousand Branches, Titanica, Westwind and Zukchiva for helping in this.

The current character count is 4605.

Without further ado, here it is...

The Security Council,

Identifying [nation=Shizensky Prime] (Shizensky) as a prime contributor to several communities and staunch defender of regional autonomy through its amicable and skilful leadership, diplomatic expertise and overall benevolence,

Noting the beginnings of Shizensky’s predecessor, Korallia, as a native of [region=10000 Islands] (XKI), a region home to a friendly and vibrant defender community, where its contributions have included:
  1. Establishing and overseeing the initial growth of Taco Island, a cultural heart of the region that thrives to this day, and

  2. Rescuing the region's foreign standing alongside Ananke II through the revitalisation of the State Department, the healing of XKI's public reputation, and the development of ties with numerous regions including [region=European Union], [region=Texas], [region=The Council of Narnia] and [region=The United Kingdom],
Aware that, after the collapse of [region=Rogue Islands Alliance] in 2004, Shizensky founded its successor, the [region=Renegade Islands Alliance] (RIA), which came to be a legendary defender region under the skilful and welcoming leadership of Shizensky, eventually going on to be commended by [resolution=SC#173]SC#173[/resolution],

Impressed by Shizensky’s invaluable efforts in building the RIA into a thriving and vibrant community, notably by creating and operating the regional forums, which allowed for efficient communication and became a major hub of cultural activity, authoring the region’s initial constitution, which laid in place the RIA’s structure for many years, and supervising the RIA’s growth as Chief Executive,

Amazed by Shizensky’s creation of the RIA Special Forces (RIASF), a historically significant naval force designed to protect vulnerable communities abroad, where Shizensky played a crucial role by:
  1. Spearheading the recruitment of new Sailors,

  2. Overseeing the RIASF’s participation in the vast majority of its operations to defend innocent communities, including those in [region=Ethiopia], [region=Asia], [region=The North Pacific], [region=Middle Earth] and [region=St Abbaddon], and

  3. Helping to unite defenderdom to exceptional levels of collaboration and coordination through the RIASF during a period of extensive political turmoil and poor communication,
Acclaiming Shizensky's further contributions following a regional revival in 2013, notably updating the RIA's constitution, strengthening regional engagement and community by establishing many cultural activities as well as the regional economy, and tirelessly working to recruit new nations such that the RIA grew rapidly after the renewal and gained 317 nations in only eight months,

Highlighting Shizensky’s work in securing the region’s foreign standing during and after the rebuild, constructing relations with regions as diverse as [region=Lazarus], [region=Spiritus], [region=Wintreath], Texas and XKI, as well as negotiating the long-standing XYZ treaty with [region=Mordor] and [region=the Rejected Realms], which provides mutual defence to benefit each other’s security and bolsters cultural collaboration,

Honouring Shizensky’s role as a founding member in [region=Fort Triumph], a historic defender region that provided vital stability to defenderdom in a time of political instability, where Shizensky designed the regional forums to facilitate efficient regional communication, and then spearheaded the introduction of many cultural activities to strengthen engagement, including a regional economy, casino and bestial invasion,

Praising Shizensky’s mentorship of numerous nations that have since become prominent defenders and regional leaders, including Scepez, Acronius, Lichto, Timothia, Tangaroan Islands, Falconias, HumanSanity and Benevolent Thomas; Shizensky was even awarded the Best Defender Mentor award in 2015 for sharing its invaluable wisdom with generations of defenders,

Extolling Shizensky's creation of NSBreeze, a tool designed to facilitate many crucial national procedures and significantly strengthen the efficiency of defending methods, also serving as the foundation of Breeze++ (a tool which allows defenders to swiftly react to invader threats), and

Convinced that Shizensky’s prime efforts have positively impacted countless nations and communities, making it a nation well-deserving of international recognition,

Hereby Commends Shizensky Prime.

The Security Council,

Introducing the legendary nation of [nation=Shizensky Prime] (Shizensky) as a prime contributor to the multiverse through its amicable leadership, diplomatic skills and overall benevolence,

Noting the beginnings of Shizensky’s predecessor [nation=Korallia] as a native of [region=10000 Islands] (XKI), where it founded Taco Island, a cultural heart of the region which thrives to this day, and then oversaw its growth as its first Mayor,

Cognisant that after a period of notable decline in XKI's foreign standing, Shizensky’s critical diplomatic work alongside [nation=Ananke II] resulted in the development of ties with regions as diverse as [region=European Union], [region=Texas], [region=The Council of Narnia] and [region=The United Kingdom], the healing of XKI’s public reputation, and the revitalisation of the previously-inactive State Department,

Aware that after the [region=Rogue Islands Alliance] collapsed, Shizensky founded the [region=Renegade Islands Alliance] (RIA) as its successor in 2004, which became a significant defender region now Commended by SC#173 due to Shizensky’s role as a welcoming and skilled leader,

Impressed by Shizensky’s invaluable efforts to build the RIA into a thriving and vibrant community, notably by creating and operating the regional forums, which allowed for efficient communication and became a major hub of cultural activity, authoring the region’s initial constitution, which laid in place the RIA’s structure for many years, and supervising the RIA’s growth as Chief Executive,

Amazed by Shizensky’s creation of the RIA Special Forces (RIASF), designed to protect vulnerable communities abroad, where Shizensky played a crucial role by:
  1. Spearheading the recruitment of new Sailors,

  2. Directing the RIASF’s participation in the vast majority of its operations to defend vulnerable communities, such as those in [region=Ethiopia], [region=Asia], [region=The North Pacific], [region=Middle Earth] and [region=St Abbaddon], and

  3. Helping unite defenderdom to exceptional levels of collaboration and coordination through the RIASF during a period of extensive political turmoil and a lack of communication,
Acclaiming Shizensky’s work in building the culture and internal structure of the RIA following a regional reboot in 2013 after the region collapsed due to the destruction of its forums, notably updating the RIA's constitution, strengthening regional engagement and community by establishing many cultural activities and the regional economy, and tirelessly inviting new nations to join the RIA's vibrant community, allowing the RIA to grow rapidly after the relaunch and gain 317 nations in only eight months,

Highlighting Shizensky’s work in securing the region’s foreign standing during and after the rebuild, notably negotiating the long-standing XYZ treaty with [region=Mordor] and [region=the Rejected Realms], which provides mutual defence to benefit each other’s security and has bolstered cultural collaboration, as well as constructing relations with regions as diverse as [region=Lazarus], [region=Spiritus], [region=Wintreath], Texas and XKI,

Praising Shizensky’s mentorship of several nations which have since become prominent defenders and regional leaders, such as [nation=Scepez], [nation=Acronius], [nation=Lichto], [nation=Timothia], [nation=Tangaroan Islands], [nation=Falconias], [nation=HumanSanity] and [nation=Benevolent Thomas]; Shizensky even earned the Best Defender Mentor award for its skills at sharing its wisdom with generations of defenders,

Extolling Shizensky's creation of NSBreeze, a tool designed to facilitate several crucial national procedures and significantly strengthen the efficiency of defending methods, and also served as the base for the creation of Breeze++ which allows defenders to swiftly react to invader threats, and

Convinced that Shizensky’s prime efforts have undoubtedly positively impacted many communities, making it a figure well-deserving of international recognition,

Hereby Commends Shizensky Prime.

You won’t find me on the NS forums very often, and definitely not as a contributor.
However for this man I will make an exception.

I can speak to the truth of most that is mentioned in this post.
The people mentioned by apatosaurus are many and I know there are a lot more players in every branch of the game that owe there careers, pleasure in the game, their training,… to Shizensky.

I joined the Renegade Islands Alliance all these years ago because of a well written recruitment telegram. I stayed because of Shiz.

So there is only one thing I can say/do towards this proposal and that is applaud it.

:clap:

Unequivocal and full throated support from me. Shiz is one of those individuals who's IC impact is immense and is maybe only outweighed by thier OOC impact on the individuals who got know them.

Support, but I simply have one question, forgive me if the answer to this is obvious or something, but why commend shizensky prime instead of the main nation of shizensky, especially when it was under the main nation that most (if not all) of the said commendable tasks were done under?

Like a large part of the commend is for founding the RIA, so why have you chosen to commend the younger nation of shizensky prime instead of the older and actual founding nation of shizensky?

Full support here. I've always had mad respect for Shiz just in how much they do, and it helps that they're actually a very wonderful person just to talk to, even just to play games of Werewolf with. But while I realize they had a bit of a history, I didn't realize it extended that far. For some reason I tend to forget that they're an older nation, so it always surprises me when I hear that they've been around doing impactful things...while I was just sitting around and ignoring everyone in my older years. :lol:

Shizensky is one of the most dedicated, thoughtful, and selfless players I have had the pleasure of interacting with in over a decade playing NationStates.

When I was at a decided low in my NationStates career, Shiz reached out to a young, combative, stubborn, but eager HS and offered me a fair deal: that if I was dedicated, put in honest work, and made an effort to work with others, I could have a home and opportunities to fulfill my ambitions. He worked with me through many a teenage meltdown, dream of glory, and old grudge to allow me to grow as a player at a time I desperately needed that guidance, and all knowing that there was a chance at any moment I might simply disappear or cause mayhem that might destroy months of his hard work. Even when we disagreed, Shiz always heard me out, and took the time to explain his honest perspective to me, even when he didn't have to. I am certainly not alone in having benefited from Shiz's generosity and mentorship.

Beyond Shiz's role as a mentor, dear friend, and confidant for a generation of defender leadership, Shiz was an extraordinary region-builder. The success of RIA was almost entirely attributable to Shiz's hard work and conscious leadership, a true labor of love, and provided tremendous joy and a sense of home to other players as well as making a significant interregional mark as a force for good throughout its multiple iterations. Compared to this, Shiz's work as a tech developer and in 10000 Islands is but a footnote, although a crucial one to understand his story as a player and the approach he brought to everything he touched.

I can think of no more deserving candidate for a Commendation.

Definitely a deserving Nominee, and written well. I think this is a likely candidate for a pass as long as people know that the nominee doesn't control Shizensky anymore. Full support on this one.
I am actually baffled that this has not passed before.

MOOOOOOOOOO...

...RRRREEEEE EDITS!

Apatosaurus wrote:Introducing the legendary nation of [nation=Shizensky Prime] (Shizensky) as a prime contributor to the multiverse through its amicable leadership, diplomatic skills and overall benevolence,

Any reason to shorten it to Shizensky and not Shiz? Might save some characters :p

Oxford comma.

Boring starter. Nothing like resolution-killing, but it is pretty overused. Either way, I don't have the energy or the knowledge of Shiz to come up with a better one so if you want to change that, it's on you.

Apatosaurus wrote:Noting the beginnings of Shizensky’s predecessor [nation=Korallia] as a native of [region=10000 Islands] (XKI), a region home to a friendly and vibrant defender community, where its contributions have included:

What in the world... rewrite:

"Opening with Shizensky’s predecessor, Korallia, as a native of [region=10000 Islands] (XKI), a region home to a friendly and vibrant defender community, where its contributions have included:"

Not a huge one, mostly just re-organizing the beginning since it looks very odd otherwise.

Apatosaurus wrote:Establishing Taco Island, a cultural heart of the region which thrives to this day, and then overseeing its growth as its first Mayor, and

Organizational rewrite:

"Establishing and overseeing the growth of Taco island, a cultural heart of the region that thrives to this day, where they also served as the first Mayor"

If you can, I would include something they did as the first Mayor or otherwise nix that bit entirely.

Apatosaurus wrote:Rescuing the region's foreign standing alongside [nation=Ananke II] during a period of notable decline thereof, notably revitalising the previously-inactive State Department, healing XKI's public reputation, and developing ties with regions as diverse as [region=European Union], [region=Texas], [region=The Council of Narnia] and [region=The United Kingdom],

You are aware that writing nation= means it will use the long form of the nation gameside, yes?

Delete "thereof". "notable" --> "significant".

Oxford comma.

Apatosaurus wrote:Aware that after the [region=Rogue Islands Alliance] collapsed, Shizensky founded the [region=Renegade Islands Alliance] (RIA) as its successor in 2004, which became a significant defender region now Commended by SC#173 due to Shizensky’s role as a welcoming and skilled leader,

I'd like to a rewrite here to bunch together a bunch of little things:

"Aware that, after the collapse of [region=Rogue Islands Alliance] in 2004, Shizensky founded its successor, [region]Renegade islands Alliance], which came to be a legendary defender region under the watchful eyes and skilled leadership of Shizensky, eventually going on to be commended by SC#173,"

Apatosaurus wrote:Impressed by Shizensky’s invaluable efforts to build the RIA into a thriving and vibrant community, notably by creating and operating the regional forums, which allowed for efficient communication and became a major hub of cultural activity, authoring the region’s initial constitution, which laid in place the RIA’s structure for many years, and supervising the RIA’s growth as Chief Executive,

"to build" --> "in building" | Delete "the" before "RIA" I would think.

Okay, you have too many different kinds of commas here, you need to use the age old rule of replacing commas with semicolons for clarity. With this in mind, the commas after "community", "activity", and "years" should be semicolons since you have further subclauses inside two of your listed contributions there. keepin mind, those semicolons are still commas, but they act essentially as big commas where the others are little commas. Hopefully this makes sense because it's absolutely crucial :p

Apatosaurus wrote:Amazed by Shizensky’s creation of the RIA Special Forces (RIASF), designed to protect vulnerable communities abroad, where Shizensky played a crucial role by:

Add "a sizable navy" or some other similar note of what RIASF is before "designed".

Apatosaurus wrote:Spearheading the recruitment of new Sailors, allowing the RIASF to gain 15 Sailors at its peak,

Just out of pure curiosity, you're saying the maximum amount of members the military ever had was... 15? That seems really low but maybe I'm just used to modern defender numbers.

Apatosaurus wrote:Directing the RIASF’s participation in the vast majority of its operations to defend vulnerable communities, such as those in [region=Ethiopia], [region=Asia], [region=The North Pacific], [region=Middle Earth] and [region=St Abbaddon], and

"such as" --> "including". Also what is the context around TNP?

It may also serve well not to use "vulnerable" since that kind of shines poorly on small native communities. Perhaps "endangered" would be more fitting.

Apatosaurus wrote:Helping unite defenderdom to exceptional levels of collaboration and coordination through the RIASF during a period of extensive political turmoil and a lack of communication,

"a lack" --> "lack".

"Helping" --> "Helping to".

Might not hurt to elaborate on this one if possible, it doesn't provide a lot of context at the moment.

Apatosaurus wrote:Acclaiming Shizensky’s work in building the culture and internal structure of the RIA following a regional reboot in 2013 after the region collapsed due to the destruction of its forums, notably updating the RIA's constitution, strengthening regional engagement and community by establishing many cultural activities and the regional economy, and tirelessly inviting new nations to join the RIA's vibrant community, allowing the RIA to grow rapidly after the relaunch and gain 317 nations in only eight months,

Okay this definitely needs a little trim. Rewrite:

"Acclaiming Shizensky's further contributions during the reconstruction of RIA in 2013, tirelessly working to recruit new nations, update the regional constitution, establish cultural activities and restart the regional economy, all of which helped the region to thrive into a vibrant community, growing to a hulking 317 nations in only eight months"

Deleted a couple of unnecessary fluff details and focused on their contributions to save some space. The clause was really jumbled so concision is the way to go.

Apatosaurus wrote:Highlighting Shizensky’s work in securing the region’s foreign standing during and after the rebuild, notably negotiating the long-standing XYZ treaty with [region=Mordor] and [region=the Rejected Realms], which provides mutual defence to benefit each other’s security and has bolstered cultural collaboration, as well as constructing relations with regions as diverse as [region=Lazarus], [region=Spiritus], [region=Wintreath], Texas and XKI,

Yeah another rewrite here just for organization's sake:

"Highlighting Shizensky’s work in securing the region’s foreign standing during and after the rebuild, constructing relations with regions as diverse as [region=Lazarus], [region=Spiritus], [region=Wintreath], Texas, XKI, and perhaps most notably, negotiating the long-standing XYZ treaty with [region=Mordor] and [region=the Rejected Realms], which provides mutual defence to benefit each other’s security and cultural collaboration,"

Apatosaurus wrote:Honouring Shizensky’s role as a founding member in [region=Fort Triumph], a historic defender region which provided vital stability to defenderdom in a time of extensive political turmoil, where Shizensky designed the regional forums to facilitate efficient communication, and then strengthened regional engagement by planning and executing countless cultural activities, such as the regional economy, casino and the Tremors invasion, in which the regional forums would be invaded by beasts,

First "which" --> "that".

You may want to find a replacement for "a time of extensive political turmoil" cuz you kinda already used that one.

Change the commas around "a historic defender region which provided vital stability to defenderdom in a time of extensive political turmoil" to emdashes (or parentheses in theory) or it is not at all clear what is going on in this clause.

"where Shizensky designed the regional forums to facilitate efficient communication, and then strengthened regional engagement by planning and executing countless cultural activities, such as the regional economy, casino and the Tremors invasion, in which the regional forums would be invaded by beasts," --> "where Shizensky provided undeniable contributions to the region's culture and regional activity by designing the regional forums and expanding them to include a regional economy, casino, and at one point, mock bestial invasion,"

Apatosaurus wrote:Praising Shizensky’s mentorship of several nations which have since become prominent defenders and regional leaders, such as [nation=Scepez], [nation=Acronius], [nation=Lichto], [nation=Timothia], [nation=Tangaroan Islands], [nation=Falconias], [nation=HumanSanity] and [nation=Benevolent Thomas]; Shizensky even earned the Best Defender Mentor award for its skills at sharing its wisdom with generations of defenders,

"which --> "that"

"such as" --> "including"

Again, all of those nation= tags are going to be complete long form names of nations. Are you prepared to face what that looks like gameside? I would seriously advise against this.

"Shizensky even earned the Best Defender Mentor award for its skills at sharing its wisdom with generations of defenders," --> "Shizensky was awarded the Best Defender Mentor award in [INSERT YEAR HERE] for its invaluable wisdom shared with generations of defenders"

"base for the creation of" --> "foundation of"

Comma after "Breeze++"

I really like the prime pun but everything else needs a magic touch:

"Convinced that Shizensky’s prime efforts have positively impacted countless nations and communities, making it a populace well-deserving of international recognition,"

Done! Hope they helped! Have an excellent day,

Just out of pure curiosity, you're saying the maximum amount of members the military ever had was... 15? That seems really low but maybe I'm just used to modern defender numbers.

15 was in fact fairly large back then; getting e.g. 8 updaters to a mission was a fairly big accomplishment, and in the words of a prominent member of the RIA at the time, "this was a time where if we had 30 people at an update it was like very special". Nowadays, 15 is indeed fairly small, but back then it was a fairly big accomplishment. I've clarified that this was a significant feat at the time.

The RIASF participated in the operation to end the coup of TNP in 2004/2005 by Pixiedance (at the time controlled by Insane Power, iirc).

Might not hurt to elaborate on this one if possible, it doesn't provide a lot of context at the moment.

During this time period, there was much miscommunication between defenders (in particular TITO and other defenders), as well as political turmoil (for example, the FRA and UDL frequently fighting each other for political reasons or even just minutiae, which significantly hindered proper collaboration between defenders). The RIASF helped coordinate and communicate between defenders during this time period despite this situation and thus provided critical stability to the defending faction.

A deserving candidate - you've produced a well researched draft and unlike some of your other efforts I can't fault it for being full of filler.

Couple of points:
Amazed by Shizensky’s creation of the RIA Special Forces (RIASF), a historically significant defender military designed to protect vulnerable communities abroad, where Shizensky played a crucial role by:
  • Spearheading the recruitment of new Sailors,

Maybe clarify that the military was a Navy, otherwise the recruitment of sailors doesn't make much sense.

Acclaiming Shizensky's further contributions following a regional reboot in 2013, notably updating the RIA's constitution, strengthening regional engagement and community by establishing many cultural activities as well as the regional economy, and tirelessly working to recruit new nations such that the RIA grew rapidly after the relaunch and gained 317 nations in only eight months,

Don't really like the use of the words highlighted - I think there are better options that don't make it sound so mechanical. Instead of "reboot" maybe use "renaissance" and you keep the alliteration. How about "renewal" instead of "relaunch"?

Rescuing the region's foreign standing alongside Ananke II during a period of significant decline, notably revitalising the previously-inactive State Department, healing XKI's public reputation and developing ties...

I feel this can be cleaned up and tighter, it's needlessly verbose.

Otherwise a well written proposal, good job would support.

I would get rid of the parenthesis and replace them with commas. Also, need an Oxford comma at the end.

Removed parentheses, I generally don't believe in serial commas with short list items like these :p

Campaign telegram Draft ^-^ (Yes, this is intended to be submitted alongside this).

Hello, %NATION%! ^-^ I would like to request your approval of these two proposals: Commend Shizensky Prime and LGBTIQA+ Inclusiveness in Schools Act.

The former is to recognise one of the most legendary and significant defenders in the history of the world, who has dedicated their time on this site to building communities such as those in 10000 Islands, Renegade Islands Alliance and Fort Triumph, as well as defending innocent communities not unlike your own from invasion. Their efforts were so successful that the Renegade Islands Alliance has been Commended for their contributions to the game, which would not have been possible without Shizensky's leadership. Shizensky also designed the tool known as "NSBreeze", designed to help defenders protect regions such as your own, as well as being a generally helpful tool for navigating and playing the game. Last but not least, Shizensky has been a prominent defender mentor, and helped introduce a variety of players into the game such that they have become some of the most significant players in the game, many even going on to receive their own Commendations. This Commendation is long overdue, and your approval will help to record the nominee's extraordinary contributions in the books of the World Assembly.

The latter proposal is designed to... you guessed it promote inclusiveness of LGBTIQA+ in schools. Many schools are blatantly homophobic, or merely pay "lip service" to LGBTIQA+, which has a variety of negative effects on LGBTIQA+ students such as forcing them to stay closeted and hurting their mental health both in the long and short term. Unfortunately, there exists little protection for LGBTIQA+ students as-is, with schools being still permitted to openly discriminate against LGBTIQA+ students or teach that LGBTIQA+ students are "confused" or "insane". This resolution is designed to fix that! It requires schools to teach things such as that individuals' gender is not necessarily their birth sex, that non-heterosexual relationships are equal to heterosexual ones, that individuals are not "mentally ill" or "confused" because they are LGBTIQA+, and more. It also requires schools to offer resources to LGBTIQA+ students to assist them in questioning as well as accepting their sexual or gender identity, help LGBTIQA+ students deal with discrimination or harassment and otherwise support mental health of LGBTIQA+ students. It then prohibits schools from permitting homophobic hate speech or harassment. Last but not least, it prohibits schools from discriminating against LGBTIQA+ students. While at it, the proposal's anti-discrimination, anti-harassment and anti-hate speech mandates also tackle misogyny in schools, another common issue in schools.

As such, I would like to strongly request your approvals of Commend Shizensky Prime and LGBTIQA+ Inclusiveness in Schools Act!

Thanks, and feel free to reply if you have any questions or concerns!
