[PASSED] Commend Verdant Haven

Postby Westinor » Sat Nov 21, 2020 7:00 pm

Hi, this is my first SC draft ever (kind of), so comments and feedback would be appreciated :)

The Security Council,

Aware of the existence of plots and schemes that threaten to tear apart nations across the multiverse,

Admiring Verdant Haven’s continuous efforts and repeated success in identifying and bringing these conspiracies to light through a series of far-reaching operations, such as:

  • Operation #1130 (Flash Crash Cash Dash), which pinpointed the origin of a sudden crash and subsequent rise in the stock market of countless nations,
  • Operation #1155 (The Banquet of Walnuts), which brought to light acts of misconduct perpetrated by religious leaders involving dancing and a disturbing quantity of walnuts,
  • Operation #1224 (Shine On, You Crazy Diamond), which unveiled several invaluable diamonds as lab-created and passed off as real by illicit dealers,
  • Operation #1243 (Kicking Back), which revealed the corrupt activities of numerous judges, who sent inmates to select private prisons in exchange for money,
  • Operation #1409 (Happy Pranksgiving!), which put a spotlight on collateral damage caused by the reckless antics of TV-show pranksters,
  • Operation #1410 (Lives On-Line), which exposed a series of terrorist threats towards AI-run hospitals demanding a ransom in exchange for the decryption keys to said hospitals,
Observing that the region of Forest has made great strides in fostering care for the environment, promoting intellectual thought, and contributing to other communities, which ultimately resulted in their commendation,

Recognising Verdant Haven’s numerous contributions to Forest during their two terms as Forest Keeper, including:

  • the implementation of the Conscience of Forest position to oversee and expand Forest’s monthly environmental action program,
  • boosting regional involvement through organising regional activities and competitions such as the Annual Photo Contest as well as heading Forest’s Crystal Jubilee Flag Design Contest, which celebrated Forest’s fifteenth anniversary as a region,
  • reforming the foreign affairs branch with the formation of the “Diplomatic Root” position to oversee and run the region’s ambassadorial program, the appointment of several new ambassadors, and the creation of 5 new embassies,
Noticing Verdant Haven’s dedication to ensuring an open and honest government, reflected in their introduction and continued publication of monthly Government Transparency Reports, in which they provide a regular and thorough update on the state of the region during their time as Forest Keeper,

Applauding Verdant Haven’s efforts in streamlining the constitution of Forest through two separate constitutional amendments, which simplified the diplomatic process and allowed for the appointment of temporary regional officers in the case of an extraordinary circumstance,

Acclaiming Verdant Haven for their contributions to this very body, most notably their co-authorship of General Assembly Resolution #522 “Repeal ‘Protecting Sites of Religious Significance’”, which repealed a flawed and overreaching resolution that prevented the exhumation of any grave that contains the body of a practitioner or a present religion for any purpose,

Saluting Verdant Haven’s remarkable service to Forest and the international community at large, believing that such dedication should be formally recognised by this body, and hoping that such recognition should serve as further incentive for the continuation of their work, hereby:

Commends Verdant Haven.

Support; obviously hold off on submitting until the repeal (hopefully) passes :p . One minor nitpick is the additional linebreaks following your bulleted lists; see if it looks better without those.

This is remarkably vague as to what specifically the nominee did (did they organize it? were they a participanet?), I'm left unsure as to why this clause in particular supports a commendation.

Only other comment I have is that I think the issues should be at the top as that seems to be the more convincing argument than their time in Forest as to why they should be commended.

Otherwise, looks good.

I've deleted the clause altogether following some questions as to the legality of the term "UCR Con". As to the other suggestion, I'll take it into consideration but I'm not super keen to make the change right now. May do so in the future, though. Thanks!

To be honest the work in Forest seems pretty meh to me and not really Commendable. Should be dropped down the draft as to my mind it’s less important than the issues.

Conscious of the dilemmas that plague leaders of nations across the multiverse to no end, and of entities that work tirelessly to identify and present such matters to the appropriate officials,

Admiring Verdant Haven’s continuous efforts in bringing pressing issues of national concern to the eyes of governmental leaders in a clear, concise, and impartial manner through the execution of several far-reaching operations, such as:

Can’t we be a bit more original than this? It feels like every Issues commend has a variation on this theme in the proposal.

Other than that it’s a well written and researched draft.

Hmmm, I missed the part where I said the nominee was deserving of commendation. A draft may be well written and researched, but that does not equal deserving.

At the present time I remain unconvinced.

You've got a broken list tag, and in the noticing clause you should make it clear they introduced the government transparency reports to forest, as it could be read as doing it for themselves in an rp sense. Generally I think you could try and expand on some of your points, giving them both more informational flesh and reasoning.

Edit: I guess the noticing clause does say "the region", but I still think you should make it clear it's about forest from the beginning, as a reader might think you've moved on from forest and it's just a bit confusing

What specifically did they do in those regional activities? Did they create them? Revive them? Make them more popular?

What is the Diplomatic Root position?

I'm not sure how Commendable the creation of new embassies is but it's only part of a subclause so I'm not that concerned about it.
Acclaiming Verdant Haven for their contributions to this very body, most notably their co-authorship of General Assembly Resolution #(???) “Repeal ‘Protecting Sites of Religious Significance’”, which repealed a flawed and overreaching resolution that prevented the exhumation of any grave that contains the body of a practitioner or a present religion for any purpose,
What are their other contributions? In what areas?

I like the changes overall, especially listing issues at the top. You have more characters that you can use; I think there is more content that can be elaborated on.

That's their most notable contribution. It implies that there are other contributions of varying levels of notability. :P

I've updated the draft to address this - hopefully that's better. As to the embassies point, I'd note that it's fairly difficult to open new embassies in Forest (seeing as upon the usual requirements a vote is required to open an embassy as well) though it doesn't appear particularly impressive, especially on its own, thus the sub-clause.

Much better imo. Only other comment I'd add—but it's not particularly a big deal for me—is that I find opening new embassies less commendable since the restrictions are being opposed by their own region, it would be different if they were opening relations with more isolationist regions.

Many others have commented on their importance to the Issues community, but I'd like to reinforce that VH is also absolutely worthy of commendation for their service in the role in which I know them best: Forest Keeper (head of govt.) of Forest. They've always been thoughtful, supportive of region members, and have handled several tense diplomatic issues with far more poise than I could have possibly managed. As with many Forestians, I think, the concrete achievements don't quite do them justice.

I also support a possible commendation for Verdant Haven. Besides all the already mentioned accolades I would like to add another field of merit to the list. Verdant has been key in keeping the dwindling community of collectors of Forest related artwork and international artwork in general alive. Verdant Haven has put great effort in preserving Forest related artwork for the general public and together with Love and Nature they are the only 2 nations to have acquired a full season 2 Forest deck and over 200 copies of unique Forest related artwork of the first season. Even more important than their obvious success as an artwork collector and preserver of culture is their role in helping other collectors achieve their goals in an environment that suffers from several malfunctioning mechanisms and often hostile and cut-throat competitors.
