FWIW, Duruuu didn't "cause" the traffic problems, they just exacerbated them. The real problem was that a CPU memory service stopped shortly before the video was posted. When a bunch of new nations started showing up, instead of being resolved in memory, everything had to be processed via disk access. As fast as computer disks are these days, they are no match for memory speeds. What's more, as people kept losing access to the system, players refreshed pages constantly trying to get back on. You send 4-5 requests for every page instead of the usual one, and yeah, things get even slower.
tl;dr: Drew Durnil didn't break the site, he just tossed a couple of handfuls of sand into the already-slipping gears.
