As fast as computer disks are these days, they are no match for memory speeds. What's more, as people kept losing access to the system, players refreshed pages constantly trying to get back on. You send 4-5 requests for every page instead of the usual one, and yeah, things get even slower.

tl;dr: Drew Durnil didn't break the site, he just tossed a couple of handfuls of sand into the already-slipping gears.

"Condemn CPU memory service"

I was about to say that. Or, "Condemn The Relative Slowness of Virtual Memory."

- Heavily WIP since said retcon.
- Guaylandia is an IC name but it's only used by nerds. Most people just call this nation "the Confederation."

"You'll have to forgive me my ignorance on the subject, but how, exactly, can a single fledgling nation be held responsible for the breakdown of critical interdimensional infrastructure when said infrastructure's been a complete shitshow since long before their nation ever formed? What good does it do anyone to pin the entire fiasco on a single group of new arrivals who clearly couldn't have known better when the root of the problem lies in the system we've been neglecting for far too long? We've had plenty of warning signs before--periods of congestion, temporary shutdowns, even devastating metaphysical collapses due to wear and tear--so why hasn't the World Assembly, in its infinite fucking wisdom, seen fit to act before now? We need to assess the state of our multidimensional transit network, determine where its flaws and failing points are, determine whether the problem is even fixable given the technologies and resources available to us, and fix the damn problem, assuming we even can, instead of looking for easy scapegoats like a bunch of lousy fascists."

OOC: This entire "incident" boils down to decreased server capacity during scheduled maintenance tasks. You can hardly expect any players--let alone newbies--to anticipate such an issue. Take the issue up with the site hosts and stop dumping on people who just want to be a part of this community.

This whole thing is a freaking joke. There are new brilliant leaders spawning everywhere from unknown regions, welcoming and becoming valued noteworthy members. Things like make me wonder if the SC is even worth any value as people's perspective of the SC as nothing but a paperweight seem to be true if this is what comes out of these halls.

OOC: The server capacity has zero to do with him and if this is the NS reaction to every time we have publicity, then well, congratulations on killing your own game. The fact this is the reaction to a brief surge is a joke. New and old people are returning. Activity is great and it has brought many to different regions. This brings new ideas, new activity and new blood needed to sustain regions. The fact this is the response is laughable.

The SC has been a joke since it was first established years ago, old bean. It does jack shit, and jack just left the building. It's only saving grace is that is makes for great TV on K-SPAN's WA Reality Show.

As operations in the Corporation were unaffected, and our borders remain secure against those damn foreigners — in addition to our opposition to all attempts to condemn or commend other nations as overt overreaching by the SC — we will vote against.

Now get off my damn lawn...

A mean old man wrote:Apologies to those whose various drafts I did not read before sidestepping said process and submitting this.

The World Assembly,

ASSERTING that, despite what popularly-reported statistics may claim, Deruuu has a crippling traffic problem,

CONCEDING that this traffic problem would be none of the World Assembly’s concern, were it contained within the borders of Deruuu,

NOTING, however, that Deruuu’s abysmal traffic nightmare has, despite international efforts to contain it, spilled well beyond the confines of this nation’s territory through apparent negligence of some inconceivable scale,

BEWILDERED by the origins of such an immense explosion of traffic originating from a small nation that was only hastily cobbled together by violent segregationists not even one month ago,

BEMOANING the fact that the mayhem resulting from this nation’s irresponsible explosion of emigration directly caused the brief shutdown of all global infrastructure,

BELIEVING that the economic damage caused to some nations by this brief but absolute shutdown may take years to undo, and that this collapse of global infrastructure has certainly resulted in an unnecessary loss of life due to the temporary failure of numerous healthcare facilities,

HURRIEDLY ATTEMPTING to accommodate enormous droves of confused refugees emanating from this awkward and unprepared nation,

HEREBY CONDEMNS Deruuu.

"As we all know, the nation of Deruuu, which was recently featured on a popular YouTube channel, caused a sudden explosion of traffic which temporarily crashed all global infrastructure yesterday. [OOC: too many people joined at once. The Nationstates website crashed.] I need not go into extensive detail regarding the stress and terrible hardship that this has caused us all. As the World Assembly, it is obvious that we must formulate a swift response to this intensely destructive and negligent action. I have written a proposal to Condemn Deruuu, to which I hope you will give your support, so that we may show this bizarrely irresponsible and destructive influence that the World Assembly does not stand idly by while nations like Deruuu go about, breaking things willy-nilly with nary a care in the world."

Please discuss.

"It is always in the best interest of the international community to respond to outsiders with kindness and openness. As a nation here previously said, new nations won't know what they're doing. Kolm itself took years to firmly establish itself in a region. Neba Urmynn, we didn't become a WA Delegate until years after that. Expecting the highest standard from new nations is irrational and we should not blame one nation for the involuntary expansion of the community. By and large, this is no one's fault, and for that reason, we will be voting against this proposal."

Condemning Drew Durnil is very ridiculous. I joined NationStates because of Drew Durnil's video about it, and many of his fans want to join in the fun, so what's wrong about condemning him? I think most of us agree that we should repeal this resolution.

IC: "This very nation sparked the upbringing of tens of thousands of new countries. A new surge in NS nationalism has been revealed. Without a doubt, many future veterans who will lend a hand in building this community have arrived from the storm of last week. Knowing this, does this same nation deserve condemnation for the accidental bureaucratic slowdown for the time of approximately one hour? I think not."

You do realize that a condemnation is nothing but a shiny medal, right? And if anything, it'd be something he could make another video out of, getting even more people here.

In the end, a condemnation doesn't really mean much except added "notoriety", which is why you'll see a lot of joke SC proposals like this suggesting them, repealing them, and then suggesting them again. I'm just surprised that this one is even at vote, to be honest.

(OOC)

Fully AGAINST.

Here are my issues with it.

This is a poor attempt at trying to normalize gatekeeping. What will the new nations think of this if it were to pass? We should be welcoming new nations with open arms, not blaming them for unintentionally lagging the website. If anything, we should be very happy that we're receiving more traffic and that NationStates is becoming more popular.

Also, is it really all that wrong for a YouTuber to want to show off the website? Deruuu just wanted to share gameplay of NationStates, is that really so wrong? His intention wasn't to crash us. Nobody could predict that so much traffic from a video will cause issues.

I do agree that this shouldn't go unpunished. However, I don't think condemnation is a fit nor just punishment.

My stance on this

Postby Necosia » Mon Apr 27, 2020 5:54 am

:eyebrow:

Like seriously, what did he actually do? Play the game and make a Youtube video about it.

Drew Durnil is a guy who has a channel about playing geography and history-related games with humor, with around 500K subs and I think what he did was fine.

The decision to join onto NationStates is a voluntary one, and I think this proposal is just silly.

For god's sake, I am against and I approve of this proposal getting bashed.

Sure, it caused a day of traffic. That did happen. But really, what did the guy himself do?

I've seen him logging in after he posted the video as well, he must have a greater interest on this... Or you all are scaring him. Good job.

You're probably gonna be scaring off other big channels, too. This all, in my opinion, just sends a bad message to all the new people and the others. My god.

I think this also might be a little positive for the community, as it has brought in a big influx of players who care about the game and the community, and bring in again an influx of veterans who stopped caring, but now do.
