"If that were true, marriage of elderly people would be likewise prohibited, and younger couples would have to undergo fertility tests before they could march down the aisle. Since neither of these things is true, this argument is full of shit."

"Also, what the hell is 'natural law?' You know law is something we made up, right? Without a sapient mind to invent it and write it down, there's no such thing as law. The phrase 'natural law' is an oxymoron, ambassador. Just because you happen to see a couple of patterns across certain aspects of biological life doesn't mean you can make up norms to impose on sapient beings. In short, ambassador, take that argument and stick it in the shredder. It's a primitive waste of time, energy, paper, and ink."

"Now, that doesn't make this proposal good and worth passing, of course; it's just that most of the arguments against it came from a garbage fire."

Not really, it's logically contradictory. Sure, you get the fluffers who just read what it's about without any understanding of the history of the WA, but It's got blatant misspellings, clauses that contradict one another, etc.

Also, you presume their country DOESN'T Prohibit the marriage of Elderly People or the Infertile. My country does. Of course we also prohibit the Marriage of everyone else, because love is stupid.

Marriage Equality was passed 10,476 votes to 6,179 votes

OOC: Well, time to get the repeals ready. They've got a mess to clean up.

"I have been instructed by my government to announce our intent to vote for any repeal of this resolution that focuses on quality of legislation and the CoCR, does not focus on national sovereignty and contains no references to supposed legitimacy of religious opposition.
We also hereby announce our noncompliance with the seventh clause: Between the choices of firing roughly half of all civil servant with a religious observation, and defying a single clause in a poorly written law, we will for the time being simply ignore the instruction. A better law, one drafted with peers in these chambers, would perhaps limit this to priests or other official representatives or employees of a religion, who in the Solidarity Movement are prohibited from attempting to imitate official acts such as marriage. As the law stands, anyone with marrying power, a large part of all civil servants in the Solidarity Movement, can exempt themselves from their duties due to their organised schizophrenia. If a repeal effort fails, we will consider our options again."

Teran Saber: "Similarly, we will be ignoring clause 1 of this proposal due to the fact that the Greater Siriusian Domain does not recognize marriage as a legal status to begin with, and thus this clause would result in an inequality of rights - the exact opposite of what this proposal was intended to do. I am sure that many nations are in a similar situation."

I've received over 900 letters from Bible Baptist Republic teachers condemning this resolution, and not one of them because of same-sex marriage. Allow me to read this one into the record as a sample of the rest "Dear Mr. Ambassador, ReGOGnizing? Do I have to go up there and smack everyone's knuckles with a ruler?" I yield the floor.

Indeed. The gross oversight in the drafting of this resolution is its only saving grace. The Combine, and any other nations that do not prohibit polyamorous relationships, would be hard-pressed to formulate any logical implementation of the resolution as it stands now. Indeed, the resolution itself would create gross inequalities: it recognizes only pairs of individuals as deserving of protections.

If the WA is going to invent rights in the future, it should be done with the understanding that some societies lack the status by which such rights may be either infringed or maintained.

Wait, that was a joke? My apologies; I was under the mistaken impression that jokes are supposed to be funny.

Emperor Augustus laughs.

“Ha ha! ‘Joke!’ You’re kidding, right? Because it was pretty stupid to be a joke.”

"And I suppose in your nation only exceptionally witty jokes are told, and never silly ones." Blackbourne responds dryly.

Ogenbond laughs. For no apparent reason. He just feels like laughing, as if something might have been funny once before.

OOC: I completely visualized that as the time Q gave Data a moment of laughter as a parting gift in Star Trek TNG.

“Actually, both are. But let’s keep comedy on the stage and the laws on the paper. Or in the case of this proposal, in the trash.”

“Yeah. For a week or two. Then the repeals will be flooding in, and if one succeeds, we’ll be in the same place we used to be.”

“But what do you expect with bureaucracy?”
