It's clearly historical and metaphorical. And somewhat accurate.

it was actually meant as a joke, and it isn't offending anyone, as far as I can see.

Hur hur. Maybe you'll entertain us with your repertoire of wife-beating, incest and pedophilia jokes next? I'm sure those can be just as funny as rape jokes.

There you have it ladies and gentlemen, Dysian has brought Rape Humor to the Security Council! Let's have a big hand!

Well this is certainly interesting. You fools are making jokes while a region is dying under the chains of a wrongful password protection. Now, can we get back to the "saving a region" part?

A game that some have played unethically. I don't find it funny that entire regions are consistently stripped from their communities. It may be a game, but this is not "Take Over and Destroy," or other stuff like that.

If you played (within the rules) and won at monopoly, would that be 'unethical'? If you don't want to play monopoly, you don't step-up; if you don't want to play 'take over and destory', you can opt-out by having/gaining a founder, passwording the region, having a vigilent delegate, calling on defenders or just not signing-up upon reading the FAQ. You could play 'retain and develop'.

You're still assuming that NationStates revolves around invaders. How would you feel if someone said you couldn't play NS unless you took part in all the debates in General, the World Cup in NS Sports, the Church of the Ceiling Cat (yes, that exists) in Forum 7, or made a storefront in Global Economics and Trade?

There's so many ways of playing NationStates, invaders are the only people who think they have a right to force their style of play on everyone.

I'm not. It's from a wider perspective since invading is a mechanic which can affect everyone on this game; hence why I was talking about opting-out of the game i.e. the 'take over and destroy' game. For example, say I was a generalite and I do care about regional security, upon reading the FAQ I'd realise it'd be prudent to take advantage of the measures the game offers to it - because if I don't I know full well the game could hurt me in ways which are entirely actionable by those who choose to invade.

 However, I'd say this: "There's so many ways of playing NationStates, invaders are the only people who know they have the ability to force their style of play on everyone who doesn't care or read the FAQ etc."

Invaders don't force anything upon anyone. You can still go on discussing about the Church of the Ceiling Cat while I crash your region to the ground.

I've had the dubious pleasure of hearing practitioners of just about every method of playing Nationstates argue that their way is the "The Real Game" and that the rest need to be thwacked into line with their way of doing things. Invaders simply get the most press.
I wish I remember who wrote:Games like Nationstates are like a big cardboard box, and there are two kinds of people in the world. The kind who look at the empty void inside the box and ask "Where the hell is it?" and the kind who jump into the box with their friends and make it into a fort, or a spaceship.

Yeah, but thats done as a reaction to invaders trying to force their style of play on others, and most invaders welcome defenders trying to defend/liberate against them.

If you are not interested in the Raider/Defender part of Nationstates (which is enshrined in the FAQ) then there are plenty of things you can do to try and aviod any confrontation. Things such as 'have a Founder', 'have an active Delegate', 'Password your Region', 'form an alliance with a Defender Org' etc. are all good ways of protecting yourselves. The fact that you couldn't be bothered means that it falls to the rest of us in the SC to bail you out, which we will right? 'cos we're a nice buch of people.

Any senior member of any Region that has not thought about what happens if they get invaded has failed. Let's face it Invasions are not a secret, they happen, we should all know that by now. The newbies out there sometimes find out the hard way or via the FAQ or the endless recruitment TGs that seem to be mostly Invader or Defender orgs.

An Invader can only 'force their style of play' on you if you let them. Simple precautions will stop it all.
