[PASSED] Repeal Commend Sedgistan

Postby Ballotonia » Fri Jun 03, 2011 4:48 am

Never thought I'd ever bother writing one of these, but recent events have made me decide I should. I really, really should.

SECURITY COUNCIL PROPOSAL
ID: ballotonia_1307247679

Repeal "Commend Sedgistan"
A resolution to repeal previously passed legislation

Category: Repeal | Resolution: SC#18 | Proposed by: Ballotonia

Description: WA Security Council Resolution #18: Commend Sedgistan shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: The Security Council,

REMEMBERING the past work done by [nation=short+noflag]Sedgistan[/nation] as defender, working to protect the rights of natives to control their own regions,

UNDERSTANDING that nations can change drastically over time.

ACKNOWLEDGING with sadness Sedgistan's invasion of The South Pacific using the puppet nation [nation=short+noflag]Devonitians[/nation],

OBSERVING the support granted to Sedgistan for this invasion activity by invader groups,

SHOCKED by Sedgistan's betrayal of the trust of friends and allies which Sedgistan once earned as a defender,

HORRIFIED by the destructiveness of Sedgistan's rule over The South Pacific, during which Sedgistan suppressed free speech to silence opposition from nations native to The South pacific, closed down legitimate embassies, and removed all references to the regional forum in an attempt to deny nations within the region easy access to said forum,

BELIEVING that any nation which undermines the sovereign rights of natives in such a hostile, brutal, and destructive manner which contradicts the values it was previously commended for no longer deserves the honor of retaining a World Assembly commendation,

Hereby repeals the Commendation of Sedgistan.

Co-authored by A mean old man.

In full support. You might want to put the name 'Unibot' in there somewhere though.

Hmm. Bit on the fence here. Does said actions by Sedgistan directly contradict some of the reasons within the original commendation? If so could the OP please highlight where recent actions contradict in the original commendation?

I wouldn't want this to be treated as a form of punishment. Or as a bandwagon for that matter. I won't support axe grinding in the SC.

However if Devon's behavior flys in the face of the original commendation, then I may support this.
There was a signature here. It's gone now.

It doesn't contradict, since I do not claim any of the factual items mentioned in the Commendation were false. Instead, they place the prior text in a new light. Specifically this: "Knowing there exist countless other regions Sedgistan has defended from the grips of raiders" and this "Asserting that any nation that has done as much work as Sedgistan has to ensure interregional peace and goodwill should be commended".

While Sedgistan has done a lot of good in the past with regard to helping natives overcome invaders, it is clear now that this is only part of the story. As the first post shows, Sedgistan will just as easily invade another region and act against the natives if it so suits an own agenda. Without trying to embellish Sedgistans effort "to ensure interregional peace and goodwill", it should be recognized that there are also efforts which contradict that entirely. The end result of weighting the two, balancing them, should in my opinion be that the Commendation does not stand.

I think you'll find a great deal of support for this repeal, Ballotonia.

After doing some research I will support. I have respect for both defenders and raiders, but a failed attempt must bring consequences with it.

A well-written, thoughtful and thoroughly justified repeal.

It is regretful that this is necessary, but Sedgistan has "earned" it.
I quit (again).

A Mean Old Man and I were talking about drafting our own repeal, and we wanted to talk to Topid and see if he would help us and submit it (thus using the original co-author and the original author of "Commend Sedgistan" to sweeten the process). I think it would be smarter if we worked together Ballo, instead of dividing the project into several competing drafts, if you'd be willing to be co-author (I think we'd have Topid submit if he agreed to the project), I'm sure we could use some of your clauses with some editing for the final submission.

I have never really been a fan of repealing commendations on the basis of one event that a nominee does following their commendation, because I don't think nominees should have their commendations in jeopardy with every action they take depending upon public reception. However, Sedgistan's recent actions undermine what he was commended for: he has tried to manipulate the institution (FRA) that he was commended for contributing to, and is now a member of the ex-feeder tyrant cluby thing.

I will support this. After all, there's no point in giving nations commendations if they are going to abuse the idea of them.

It's an understandable perspective, considering your commendation as a defender might be next on the chopping block for your part in this fiasco.

The question for me is whether the actions in the present, invalidate the actions of the past.

The SC voted in the commendation and the data contained within that legislation is still, as far as I can tell, true.

The only line in question to me is:
Asserting that any nation that has done as much work as Sedgistan has to ensure interregional peace and goodwill should be commended,

Clearly his current actions are in contravention of extending goodwill, but I'm not certain that it's enough to wipe out he has done in the past.

While I dislike what he (and CG) have done, I'm not certain there is legal ground to revoke the previous commendation.

As for giving him a condemnation, I think that's absurd and likely exactly what he's after.
