And many people enjoy spitting on the pope.... Are we allowed to do that?

The Kingdom of Zanestre supports the efforts of some in the Assembly to protect our national animals. Our country would protect other nation's animals, and will even if this measure is defeated. I, King Zan, decree that the Kingdom of Zanestre will vote in favor of Protecting Migratory Animals.

Alright so my nation is a giant flying steamship-saucer hybrid the size of Texas with turbines. I can't afford my entire nation to crash into the ground just because some geese happened to fly by. My AA turrets shoot anything that come within 100 meters to ensure my nations safety. Unless you happen to be a friendly neighbor dropping off supplies.

Protecting Migratory Animals

Postby Apieceofswisscheese » Wed Apr 30, 2014 10:41 pm

Objections to the Protecting Migratory Animals proposal:
There seems to be an assumption that all migratory species are endangered and require this kind of over site with the investment of resources required. There are no provisions for inability to comply because of weather, natural disasters, or war. The member nations are required to comply if the migrating organism flies over a one meter strip of their territory without landing, resting, or feeding there.
The proposal makes no exception for not sharing data that is research and is private intellectual property. This has the effect of requiring the seizure of property which is unconstitutional or illegal
in many of the member nations. Provision 4. "Requires member nations to restrain individuals, businesses, and organizations within their jurisdiction from unreasonably degrading the integrity of migratory animal populations living in, or traveling through, the territory of any nation;" there is no definition of unreasonable nor provision for who decides what is reasonable and therefore this provision is essentially a blank check for requiring expenditures and actions that are potentially extremely damaging to a member nation.

For these reasons Apieceofswisscheese urges the rejection of the Protecting Migratory Animals proposal.

No more than Sensible Limits on Hunting does.

As long as you aren't taking down flocks with flak cannons, you should be fine.
There's more than enough evidence out there that responsible hunting techniques can increase animal populations in the long term.

This resolution would prevent you from setting up a nationwide duck net at their average flight altitude or constructing tesla coils that electrocute everything that flies by. Really just a non issue to bird hunters.

CD ardently against a proposal is usually a good sign that I'll vote FOR it, and so I shall. My one concern is the categorisation of what is invasive and what is not, but that's way beyond the scope of what can be covered here. Well written Mosktopia

Except this resolution though deals with international migrations, protecting those animals which migrate through two or more nations. Cardoness would not want the people of Eleeziam hunting one of our species of migrating cow into extinction for sport. It is sacred to some of our people and they live off of the land together. But perhaps your people hunt for sport or because they think the horns are an aphrodisiac or what not. I am not saying this is the case with your people, and we all live on islands so it doesn't really matter, but the point is that species really are hunted to unsustainable numbers. We are here to put a stop to it. (Put a stop to mass hunting, not hunting in general which we support.)

Resisting the urge to make jokes about African and European swallows carrying coconuts, we the Puddle Jumping Wads of Wrapper vote in favor of this resolution, in order to preserve the population of our national animal, the slack-jawed jumping bean.

(But then of course, uh, slack-jawed jumping beans are non-migratory...)

Well, since migration is defined as seasonal movement, no. Then again if they were to go somewhere every year for summer vacation.... :)

Hunting birds is an international sport. Spitting on the pope is just stupid. He has a valid point, in his country it can be important for many reasons to hunt migratory birds.

invasive

Postby Wutthefrakistan » Thu May 01, 2014 8:18 am

I would just like to remind everyone that invasive, in this context, refers to an unnatural introduction of flora/fauna into an environment, and not the natural expansion of species across the invisible (to animals/plants) borders imposed by nations.

Ambassador MacAlester looks around the chamber, shaking his head "I don't see the need to track and protect every single migratory species that crosses into our nations borders, endengerd species, yes, and their protection is already mandanted by GA #66. All this does is force nations to divert more funding, which some nations can nigh afford, into their respective Departments of Natural Resources. I wonder of the author of this proposal realizes the costs involved with the proper tagging and trapping of animals." he presses the AGAINST button on his desk before taking a seat.
