It was one tank lost out of a task force of dozens. I'd take that loss ratio any day.

Anyway the claim that an 88 could penetrate special armor is dumb. If this is accurate then the Abrams could theoretically be penetrated in the sides by 88mm L/71 APCR ammunition, but I'm skeptical.

Didn't Abrams tanks take numerous recoilless rifle and RPG attacks from all sides during the 2003 tank rush on Baghdad? And only one tank was lost due to repeated engine fires that the extinguishers couldn't put out.

Tankies and gentlemen, I am proud to present to you a whole new level of shitposting, courtesy of the ever-terrible 'Tanks. Being tanks.' Facebook page: Most people think that World War 2 armor piercing tank ammunition are absolutely no match to modern Main Battle Tanks with composite armor. However...

How hard is dealing with fallout in a post-nuclear environment? I've searched forever, but I can't find some old US Army nuclear survival course. There were some easy tips to avoid overexposure to fallout in combat: try not to kick up lots of dust, brush off the ground you are about to lay on if you...

The Americans could have won 73 Easting if they had switched equipment with the Iraqis. That battle (That whole war) is really just a chronicle of how absofuckinglutelyterribad the Iraqi Army was (And still is). If the US troops had been equipped with circa 1944 equipment they could have won that b...

That would only be more mobile in the tactical sense. At the operational scale, light armor is restricted by the same requirements as armored and infantry units: Gas and spare parts. Food and water is easier to bring with you or requisition but you can't depend on it. I guess it would work fine if y...

No you aren't. It really is ~18 weeks. That's about how long it takes to learn the basics of fire and movement, fire and maneuver, and digging a foxhole. You can cut it shorter if you have a pre-selected pool of applicants and train them in nothing but practical skills, rather than useless things l...

In Napoleonic warfare, how much of a boon is it to have elite or highly respected units, a la the French Old Guard or the Russian Life Guard Grenadiers? The morale effect of these units is highly attested to, but one lost battle and a general can lose the cream of their army's crop. Mixing veterans ...

To what degree are modern militaries influenced by the legacy of older ones? More specifically, in my modern Prussian military, I am aiming to be heavily derivative of Napoleonic and Seven Years' War-era military style. Things like using the bright, flashy uniforms for dress parades, and having unit...

Thoughts? Part of me wants to say the author is being sensationalist in throwing around the word 'nuclear', but as is pointed out, WWI started over a small scrap of territory that Russia had a vested interest in protecting. 3. In the modern world, humongous guns are useful for one thing and one thing only. This is engaging and penetrating targets that are too hardy to be penetrated by the fire of ordinary artillery. By and large, this means extra-hardy bunkers and submarine pens. (This capability has been losing the c...

In a setting equivalent to 1935-1940, at what level would it be a good idea to issue rifle grenade launchers? Specifically the Schießbecher type. Basically, in what sub-unit is the position of rifle grenadier? They should be freely available at the squad level. Here is an old rundown I did of a fan...

Gayla is being especially helpful today.

Question: Was it just as common through the age of musketry and the world wars to turn your rifle around and club people with the butt as it was to bayonet them?

How did mass production of non-standardized guns and ammo work during the Napoleonic Wars and Seven Years' War? I'm guessing armies had stocks of black powder and lead ingots, and soldiers would cast their own bullets and measure their own powder, but I have no idea.

So, about Syria. I've heard that the recent chemical attack was sarin or chlorine, and this firsthand account claims sarin based on the symptoms. Is this going to actually change anything? Why do you need to shoot Javelins from a tank? Are gun-launched ATGMs not enough? Not that they are necessary at all unless you don't think your main gun is enough. I decided no gun launched. As its only 90mm If your gun isn't powerful enough that you need to rely on a few ATGMs you have a problem....

What weapons should foot officers carry in a Napoleonic timeframe? I'm thinking some sort of saber(probably the Blucher saber, because duh) would be the obvious thing, for signaling and fighting with in a pinch, but it also makes sense to equip officers with pistols if need be. I'm debating whether ...
