The book Achilles in Vietnam mentions an unofficial practice among the US military in the Vietnam era of(and I'm paraphrasing, obviously) not having troops stay with the same unit they train with, fight with, and come home with, and that this caused a great deal of damage in that it did not allow th...

Why did the T-34 and Tiger I both have so much armor on their rear? Especially in the case of the well-sloped T-34's rear, it seems like a wasteful design choice.

Cool video of a T-64 autoloader. Question: Do autoloaders ever misfeed the ammo? Also, I was reading Marine Corps Tank Battles in Vietnam , and it referenced a bad problem the M48 tended to have where the thin-walled canister rounds would sometimes break open while being loaded. Is this a common pr...

Just watched the new Call of Duty trailer. Amazingly, they will crap out a WWII shooter seemingly based around D-Day to VE Day, entirely uninspired and pretty obviously an admission that Battlefield 1 had the right idea. I might still play it. It looks to be based around the 1st Infantry Division, a...

IMO it's better to do something you enjoy than do something that gets lots of money, which is true regardless of my opinion on ancient history's practical utility, if only because that means you'll be better at the job and have a healthier, less stressful life. Well, thanks. Because I do hate STEM ...

They're the only ones worth money in the actual world too. Philosophers and historians are the lowest paid of all university professors. The highest paid are economists, who are STEM with political agendas, and STEM. http://work.chron.com/salary-liberal-arts-college-professor-5529.html Yeah, $72,00...

dod better be calling up all these classical phds who spent 30 years studying herodotus, hannibal, etc. clearly they know more about the relevant history of today's wars than people who spent the same 30 years studying the ottoman empire's collapse, the rise of wahhabism through the 20th century af...

No one actually cares (indeed, no one actually knows enough about to begin with) what people a few thousand years ago actually did. Maybe you don't, but I know plenty of people who do. Mattis himself says that Gates of Fire is among his top two books on leadership.(skip to 10:27 for that part. Yes,...

Because no one cares about people who died two thousand years ago. Erm, there's quite a lot to learn from it. Gates of Fire - a historical fiction novel about a fairly inconsequential battle well over two thousand years ago - is right at the top of Mattis's reading list. Beyond simple military hist...

Before it got slashed, were there plans to mount the XM307/312 on AFVs as replacements for the M2? I assume the XM312 would have largely similar performance, but the 307's got a lot more power behind it.

Okay, if you were a tank gunner with knowledge of modern tanks, a WWII-era gun with unlimited ammo, and the target you were shooting at was entirely in-crewed and thus not fighting back, you could be able to get a mobility kill on an Abrams from point-blank range on the rear. Thus proving nothing i...

It's been a few years since I read the book Thunder Run, but IIRC only one Abrams was damaged to the point that it had to be left behind. All took many hits but only the one was a mobility kill.
