Re: Why should religion be an obstacle to science?

It was brought up in the other thread that, in many cases, religions (of various creeds) have blocked scientific advancement. I don't deny that. It's a historical fact. The question I want to know is: why? Power (or the fear of being kicked out of it) and laziness. Also possibly stupidity. In short...

Re: Question about discussing religious beliefs / lack thereof

Before I found Catholicism, I was reading on Zen Buddhism for the purpose of conversion. Huh! So, having studied Zen, why did you choose Catholicism? No sarcasm intended; I'm sincerely curious. Did Catholicism seem "better" or "purer" in some way? Or just "fit"? I ask ...

I wish I could do what my aikido sensei does: tries to lead them down the eight-fold path to Zen Buddhist enlightenment. Apparently, this really confuses them.

Well, in some sense, those of us who believe in tolerance impose that view on people who don't. ;)

Re: Hitler or Stalin or Mao?

[x] Karl Marx.

Marx provided the insidiously brutal ideology that justified both Mao and Stalin (and also Pol Pot). Hitler briefly flirted with the commies as well. No Marx, no great butchers of the 20th century.

Nah... Kim, his two sons, and the rest of the junta deserve bullets in the head, ideally after having been convicted of crimes against humanity. If that's not feasible, just the bullets... and if that's not feasible, a few cruise missiles ought to do.

Re: Parody and copyright

What's the general laws on this - especially for those, like myself, who maintain off-site websites?? I don't want anyone on here to get prosecuted for copyright infringement, but advice is welcomed. The laws vary by country. In the US, copyright holders have little ability to stop people from paro...

OI responded that, in the eyes of the law , he is presumed innocent since he was never proven guilty in court. However, history tells a different story. (emphasis added) You hit the nail on the head the first time: free people want to be presumed innocent as a matter of law, to prevent the gov't fr...

Re: Your stand on abortion?

For me it depends on how far the pregnancy is. If the fetus has a functioning brain and neural net, it is somewhat hard for me to not see it as a little person. As such I would like some restrictions on abortion in that stage. Some restrictions? It's a person, but not really? I draw the line at adu...

So you think it's right for a group of people to use a depiction of a group of people in a manner that is hostile, abusive and undignified? See, this is one of the things that confuses me about these discussions: the reason (or among the popular reasons) people name sports teams after groups is to ...

I'm playing another computer game about "nation states": Europa Universalis 3.

As to video games, I've got a bootleg copy of Tempest running under MAME. Gotta love the original arcade games: so much gameplay on so little computing power.

Northwest Slobovia is an attempt at semi-serious Libertopia. I'm not sure its policies would work in the real world, but it produced some amusing role-playing with my neighboring sister-state, Nord Baden. The Badische were a socialist nanny-state In the real world, I'm a small-government conservative.

Re: NSG's Millions

It's easy to spend $30M: just buy a top of the line bizjet with all the trim -- you can even get gold-plated toilet seats if you want. :)

And I can think of plenty of uses for $300M: endow a school or museum, build a railroad, or any number of "purely" charitable acts.
