There is a real example that comes to mind, and this example is a good one because it speaks to both an influencer not using their position to educate and to the problems with seeking "superpower" status. For what it's worth, this person has improved immensely and has proven me wrong in ma...

Yohannes, totally agreed. Superpowers, and even just powers (I just used superpower because it's a more powerful word that brings attention) are people who actively RP. And, yes, GD is very narrative/RP/story driven, so superpower status is much more flexible. And, if other regions aren't like that,...

Because it has been talked about elsewhere, I just wanted to clarify the context of being a "superpower." I'll use my example of UWO to elucidate: [Snip.] When it comes to UWO’s goal of striving for superpower status, one item that remains ambiguous is the exact meaning of what such status...

Great thoughts Monavia! Just to clarify on: At no time was I ever under the impression that our IC activities remain unconstrained by normative principles. Value-free as in divorced from our OOC values. I mean it in the sense of giving characters/organizations preferences and taking them as given wh...

Unless it's part of a closed-world RP, or unless a pre-existing serious trade relationship has been roleplayed or worldbuilt, there's really no reason for me or anyone else to care about trade sanctions from a random II nation. There are literally thousands of nations for you to be trading with. If...

Fedala, Imperial Province, The Golden Throne "The Steward of Batavia has passed away, Your Imperial Majesty," said Kalo Vendemel, who stood tall with a well-chiseled chin and a paunch for a stomach suggestive of too much luxury. Fedor weighed the kríerlord's words, chin in hand as he sat ...

This next point has less to do with such powers in that case, but it's still worth discussing: One big thing I have noticed with respect to many so-called powers, or "super-powers" (or the abysmal """hyper-powers""") is that they OOC demand for IC respect and...

That's interesting because in my community it's the most competitive people who don't start the RPs they plan. It's the people who are more methodical, less competitive and more cooperative, that get their RPs going. For example, this RP is highly cooperative in the sense that the OP has put strict ...

On NS, the far biggest problem has always been RPs that devolve into OOC conflicts, not RPs that are too bland because the players aren't competitive enough.

EDIT: And, note, that what I said has to do with worldbuilding, not writing.

Those are good additions, Allanea. Regarding competitiveness, I think this is a complex subject that is hard to wrap our heads around. It makes sense for IC characters and organizations to be competitive, but depending on what the player is competing toward I think OOC competition tends to be more h...

So what do you define as an IC Superpower? In NS II, I would think this is a tricky thing to define because most states are nuclear armed, and even amongst realistic communities, it's still uncommon to find players controlling a state of less than 100mil. So is this a matter of mere population x mi...

The OOC Ethics of Being an IC Superpower

The OOC Ethics of Being an IC Superpower As roleplayers, we’re taught that the in-character (IC) world should never cross with our out of character (OOC) world, and thus the world we build and the stories we roleplay should be divorced from the emotions and preferences we have outside of it. Rolepl...
