French-American, actually. Annaud as director, co-writer and co-producer, Alain Godard as co-writer, Mandalay & Repérage as producing companies. Ah. Guess I got misled by the casting. Ah, Enemy at the Gates . The movie where the Russians talk like Brits and snipers get nothing but headshots.

The Soviets were the defining power of WW2. Sure, without the help of the rest of the Allies, they would have lost sorely, but the reverse is also true. The Soviets were a major power, sure, but what about the US. The US nearly single-handedly defeated Japan. Neither the Soviets nor any of the othe...

Generally don't like Holocaust movies, but this is one of the good ones.

Lubitsch made hilarious movies. "To Be Or Not To Be" is one of my favorites.

I fall on the opposite side. The big twist is what made the movie stand out to me.

Pitch Black (2000)

I can see why Vin Diesel became a star after that movie. He owns pretty much every scene he's in. The movie itself is an above average sci-fi/horror that follows in the footsteps of Aliens. First half dragged on too long, second half was pretty good.

Fury (2014) I like a good "squad" war movie. Basically a movie that focuses on a bunch of guys in the middle of a war (usually the conflict World War II and typically only the USA/USSR/Russia make these sort of movies). This one was a very stylish cliche storm though. I marginally enjoyed ...

The Battle of Algiers (1966)

I forgot how unrelenting and grim this movie was. I really wish there were more war movies like it.

The Two Jerseys wrote:'Breaker' Morant (1980), with Edward Woodward.

Second-best military courtroom drama, behind only Paths of Glory.

I'll back this. I can't think of another movie that really delves into the motivations behind war crimes in quite the same way.

Who Can Kill A Child? (1976)

Kind of a lost classic of 70s horror. Think "The Birds" meets "Children of the Corn". Slow pace picks up to quite a horrific crescendo.

Videodrome

A fine, fine film. One of my favorite horror films of the 1980s. Probably edges out The Fly for my favorite Cronenberg movie.

The Bird With the Crystal Plumage (1970)-Pretty good early Argento slasher/mystery with lots of wacky side characters to brighten things up. Nothing he wouldn't do better with Deep Red though. Slacker (1991)-Really experimental movie with basically no plot. Basically a slightly satirical day in the ...

The Virgin Spring (1960)-The trope making revenge movie. Inspired "Last House On the Left" which was, IMHO, a bad movie except for a few choice splatter scenes. "Virgin Spring" has a very repulsive rape scene and smartly also calls the cathartic act of vengeance into question. V...

I Am Legend (2007)

Will Smith did a good job and I liked all the post-apocalyptic bits about him surviving as the only human left in New York, but overall I didn't care for this. Nothing here that 28 Days Later and other similar films didn't already do better.

Green Room (2015)

Quite good. Most probably the sleeper genre flick of the year. Probably too violent and nihilistic to find a wider audience, but bound to become a well-liked cult film, I think.

Curse of the Cat People (1944), with Simone Simon and Kent Smith. Land and Freedom (1995) Low budget war film about a British Communist who goes to fight for the POUM in the Spanish Civil War.
