Intended as the 712^th destroyer of the United States Navy as a member of the Gearing-class and eventually refitted into the first guided missile destroyer of any navy in the world.
In her DDG configuration, she carried 4 Mark 12 5"/38-caliber artillery guns in 2 dual-purpose Mark 38 mounts forward (AB configuration with the B turret superfiring over the A turret), as well as twin RIM-2 Terrier surface-to-air missile launchers aft where the Y turret once was.
