This peace and prosperity was finally disrupted when the French invaded, establishing the Parthenopean Republic, and soon being thrown out by native Neapolitans. But a decade later the French returned and installed their own monarchy, now with a faithful ally in the southern Italian peninsula, they can turn elsewhere.
