Save telegrams?

Postby The Sedge » Wed Jul 22, 2009 4:38 pm

I've seen a debate on telegrams/inboxes before, but looking through Unibot's thread, can't seem to find it, hence the new topic.

Would it be possible to have some way of designating a certain number of telegrams 'undeleteable', so that if a new telegram comes into your inbox which would normally bump the 'undeleteable' one out, it instead bumps out the next oldest one. Alternately, you could have an archive for telegrams, with each nation allowed to save, say 5 telegrams in there, which don't get affected by new telegrams coming in.

This would allow nations to keep hold of important telegrams, or those to which they have some kind of sentimental attachment. Additionally, it would help when reporting abusive telegrams, since these could be archived/made undeleteable, so that you know they won't be bumped out of your inbox by new telegrams before the mods read it (particularly useful for delegates/founders of large regions).

hhhmm... an archive folder?

I like it..... I'll of course be adding it to the list.

Is this an idea, by any chance, spurred from CG's "NS History" thread from a while back?

This was Violet's opinon on a send box ...

[violet] wrote:It shouldn't be, but it is, due to the original game design. The main issue is it's impossible for the game to load part of a nation: it loads all of it or nothing. TGs often constitute 50-80% of a nation's total data, so something simple like adding Sent Items means doubling server load in a very high use area.

Still, it's something that would clearly be very useful, so I won't rule it out.

So, apparently saving telegram data is a strain on the server.

However, unlike a save box which is almost guaranteed to be doubling the size of memory needed, with an archive box, some people would use their archive a lot, and some wouldn't bother archiving at all.

Well as long as you delete the messages you don't consider "undeleteable", you won't have a problem with losing them. You can get some 15 telegrams before it starts deleting the oldest one. That provides you with more than enough time to delete the ones you no longer need.

Not if you have a WA proposal submitted, have been lobbying actively, for this, and then get sent numerous replies and related comments while you're offline (e.g. asleep) -- I speak from firsthand experience here -- and maybe not if you're the teller (or one of the tellers) for a ballot within some large region or other organisation either...

Exactly - I imagine that feeder delegates have a similar problem, and I've had large numbers of telegrams arrive in my inbox over a very short period of time when out defending.

Yes. I lost my ejection notice from Pierconium's retirement bash while out on a mission. I would've loved to be able to save it permanently, and had been deleting telegrams previous to that mission so that I could.

Even if the archive would take up too much space, I think the idea to have a checkbox or something for ones you didn't want to lose is brilliant, and I would absolutely use it.

I've just added support for marking telegrams as saved. They will never be removed from your inbox as long as they're marked as saved, so you will need to be careful not to fill up your inbox with saved telegrams. If you do, you'll never get new ones.

That sounds lovely Pyth. Surely most people won't be saving more than a couple important messages anyway....

Thanks Again!

Will the sender get a message saying their telegram didn't get sent? Will the person receiving (or not in this case) the TG's?

Personally I'd like a larger TG box. Maybe able to hold 20-30 total TGs, but if it'd put a strain on the servers, then oh well.

I'd like a larger TG box as well, but if it's not to be, then being able to mark even a few TG's as saved would be so very useful.

I think it would definitely be nice if the sender got a message. And perhaps if there was a notification to someone telling them they'd reached their limit and wouldn't be receiving any future telegrams? I don't think people would realize they were saving too much.

The sender now gets a message that the recipient's inbox is full, and a warning is displayed on the telegrams page if your inbox is filled with saved telegrams.

Brilliant, however I fear people don't check their telegram box unless someone telegrams them. Possibly if their box is full, and someone is attempting to telegramming them - the word "Telegrams" on the sidebar could turn red? Or some sort of other way to signal the user, like a message on the Nation's page (Like when NS was saving names for NS2).

Also what about mods sending warning telegrams and what not? What if your telegram box is full?

They'll be there when they save all of their telegrams. After they do so, the warning will be at the top of the screen. As for mods, they can do something about it, but I could work in an exception if necessary.

Hate to gravedig this thread, but I have a tangential suggestion dealing with this function. Would it be possible to have a button that would export your telegrams? The save function can only get you so far, and allowing someone to export to an offline file would allow people to clear their boxes completely.
