RADIATIA'S LARGEST CITY SLAMMED BY 'LIFE-THREATENING' BLIZZARD

February 6th 4075NC Last updated 00:30 Exegrad Standard Time
ImageImageImageImage

EXEGRAD, ALAYENIA
The worst blizzard in 30 years has brought heavy snow and deadly cold temperatures to Radiatia's largest city, while 100 million Radiatians across the central and southern states are under a severe weather warning.

Image
The typically bustling city of Exegrad has ground to a halt due to extreme cold and blizzard conditions

Exegraders have woken to nearly two metres of overnight snow, while powerful winds continue to batter the city as one of the worst polar storms in recent memory makes it way south. While the blizzard conditions are expected to ease, extreme cold including wind chills of -45 are set to linger until the end of the week, effectively shutting down the city.

Exegrad Mayor Jeremy Jager has declared a state of emergency and is warning Exegraders to avoid all non-essential travel, to stay indoors and work from home if possible until the extreme cold eases.

"Do not go out unless absolutely necessary. Frostbite could set in as little at 5 minutes. Even a short walk to the corner shop could be risky. Stay indoors!"

All bus services have been cancelled as has the Exegrad Overland while the Exegrad Underground is running on reduced services. Schools in the area are all closed as are most government departments and businesses, including the Exegrad Stock Exchange. All three airports in the city are closed, with all flights into and out of Exegrad cancelled or diverted.

A state of emergency has also been declared for the entire of state of Alayenia, with similar conditions abound in the state capital of New Aliyas, north of Exegrad. Similar blizzard conditions are being experienced in the states of Diifgrao, New Vashura, Mus, Saku and Skorptsch while cold warnings are in place for the entire south-central region of the Radiatian Federation, with 100 million people currently under various extreme weather warnings.

Homeless shelters in the city are also overflowing as the city's large community of vagrants desperately seek shelter from the harsh cold. An estimated 300 homeless people have been killed already.

"The deaths of so many of Exegrad's homeless does prove that, harsh as this blizzard is, there is a silver lining!" said the mayor. "The homeless are an eyesore and when they camp outside of businesses they put off potential buyers. We'll have nice clean streets for consumers to enjoy once this storm is over!"

Today's high temperature was -17 degrees Celsius with an overnight low of -33. The average high at this time of year is 0, with an average overnight low of -11. The extreme cold is expected to continue until Saturday.

Tensions Rise as MPs Reconvene Amid Political Drama
Author: Milân Hežist́ḱi
Wednesday February 07, 2022

Tamara - With parliament returning from winter recess last Monday. Agausian President Simon Aioviḱara (SD) called in the 2024 summer session of the Agausian Parliament as mandated by the constitution. He did so as the coalition his party leads has been plagued with infighting and low approval numbers. Polls indicate the opposition is polling double digits over the governing coalition.

Despite the governments bickering, the opposition aims to pilot a united front during this next legislative session. MPs from several opposition parties have all expressed their party’s willingness to work with their opposition partners.

To illustrate this attitude Agausian Liberal party leaders, including Slavuri governor Niḱolâ Kasrâni, during a meeting of the Agausian Liberal Delegate and Union committee (DDK) at the Radisson Blu, Odssa, rallied his party to work arm-in-arm with fellow opposition members.

The upcoming legislative session is expected to be a heated one, as both the government and opposition parties have a lot at stake. The government will need to prove to the public that they can work together and effectively govern the country, while the opposition will try to capitalize on the government's weaknesses and gain more support from the public.

The Chaiman of Parliament Âḱob Ramont́i has acknowledged the challenges the government is facing and has promised to work towards unity and cooperation within his party and with the opposition. He has also pledged that the parliament will address the pressing issues facing the country, such as the economy, healthcare, energy, and housing.

Ramont́i Faces Internal Revolt in First Legislative Days
Author: Iust́inâne Ḱaḱačó
Sunday February 10, 2024

Image

Tamara - A routine procedural vote unexpectedly transformed into a political spectacle when a small, yet influential faction of Social Democratic MPs opted to abstain from voting, creating a palpable rift within the party. Reports from inside the chamber depicted Chairman Ramont́i's visible shock as the voting concluded, with six members of his own party conspicuously refraining from casting their votes.

As the roll call concluded, Lazlov Lomaâ, Noe Čirkezâ, Giorgi Lomšaže, Miriam Šigév, Adur Žaḱeli, and Ëgeni Ḱargai remained seated in protest as their names were repeatedly called during the final moments of the voting process. Despite their abstentions, the resolution, requiring a simple majority, successfully passed with 67 votes in favor, 62 against, 10 abstentions, and 6 absentees.

The orchestrated maneuver, led by Lomaâ, the MP representing Tamara’s seventeenth district, served as a clear signal to Chairman Ramont́i regarding the mounting dissatisfaction with party leadership and coalition dynamics. Lomaâ had previously expressed his frustration with coalition partners during an interview last September, squarely attributing parliamentary gridlock to their actions.

Following last year's elections, Lomaâ, along with Čirkezâ, Lomšaže, and Šigév, had demanded special concessions to support Ermolai’s premiership. Like many, they harbored reservations about coalitions, persoanly expressed a preference for a minority government—a sentiment echoed by former PM Nebisḱopa. Ramont́i submitted to their demands to secure unified support for the new prime minister and cabinet.

If the Social Democrats intend to sustain their governance, Ramont́i must address the mounting discontent within his party ranks. Failure to do so could imperil his leadership or even lead to the collapse of the entire government.

UNMARKED WARSHIP VIOLATES DAPHOMIRIAN WATERS

Yesterday afternoon, a local fisherman from the Daphomirian town of Port Lovesby went out into the ocean to catch some fish, when he noticed what looked like a faint silhouette of a warship, no further than 8 kilometers from the coast. The fisherman immediately reported this to the Daphomirian Navy (don't ask how he knows how to call them), who later dispatched a Bachelor-class frigate, the DNS Bachelor, to intercept the unknown warship. The captain of the DNS Bachelor ordered the unknown vessel to raise its flag for identification, to which it did not respond. The captain then ordered the ship to immediately exit Daphomirian waters or else a warning shot would be fired. The unknown vessel finally complied, and sailed away from Daphomirian waters.

"I couldn't recognize what ship that was, never raised the flag, or gave any identification. Looked like a corvette or perhaps a destroyer, but I couldn't quite tell due to the distance. It was only when we threatened to fire a shot that the bastard finally left. Like, what in God's name was that ship doing here? It's not like his navigation system stopped working," the captain of the DNS Bachelor explained in an interview with us.

This incident promptly convinced the Daphomirian Navy to increase regular patrols around territorial waters in order to prevent any other ships sneaking in. As for the unknown ship, it was never heard from since. No radio contact was made, and the government is suspecting that this intrusion was not an accident. Any more unauthorized ships coming into Daphomirian waters will be promptly intercepted, the Navy said.

Labour announces 'Vision 2040' policy to ban sale of ICE vehicles 2028, petrol by 2040

Schofield at the party's 2024 annual
conference. Photo // TVDG

Labour leader Phoebe Schofield dropped a major bomb on both car-lovers and the automotive industry yesterday as she announced the party's plans to ban the sale of ICE vehicles by 2028.

The plans were announced at the party's annual conference, held at the Peters Convention Centre in Central Nelson. She outlined the party's plan, dubbed 'Vision 2040', which would see a total elimination of the sale of petroleum to individual consumers by 2040.

If Labour wins this year's General Election, the party plans to ban the sale and registration of new and imported ICE vehicles by 2026, and non-plugin ICE hybrids by 2028. Sales and registrations of PHEVs, or Plug-in Hybrids would be next on the chopping block, banned in 2029. The culmination of the plan would see all non-BEV, or Battery Electric Vehicles, banned from sale or registration by 2030. Further down the line, the sale of petroleum and diesel products to consumers would be banned in 2040, with commercial and business customers given until 2045 to make the switch, and transport operators would be given until 2050.

Currently, Drongonia's nearly top-selling vehicles are all ICE cars, with the Polestar 2 coming in 7th place and Tesla's Model X coming in 12th place on the new registration charts, according to 2022 figures. Accompanying the measures would be a "Clean Car Rebate" scheme, similar to that operated in New Zealand. New Zealand scrapped the scheme on January 1st of this year, with the election of the new National-led coalition government.

When asked about the viability of the plan by reporters, Schofield conceded that the plan "may seem radical to some" but is the "only way to truly begin tackling the climate crisis". Prime Minister English weighed in on Peaker, with a post labelling the scheme as "utter nonsense" garnering over 300,000 likes. Conservative leader David Townsend went further, calling the scheme a "communist plot to put the Government in charge of personal transport", when talking to Newstalk ZG's Mike Hopkins.

There were mixed reactions in the automotive sector, with NW Auto's share price dropping 2% following the announcement. New EV startup Roveron saw a 7% jump in their share price. BE Forward Drongonia, the leading importer of Japanese imported vehicles, released a statement on their website following the announcement, stating that "BE Forward would see its business utterly devastated by the move".

It has yet to be seen whether the announcement will impact on the party's rising popularity, but TVDG polls will be released later this week.

IRENE VASILA ANNOUNCES THAT SHE WILL BE RUNNING FOR PREMIERSHIP
Irene Vasila has announced in an interview with Advin Rouvel that she will be running for premiership in the 2024 elections from the ND party

5th January 2024 | Arkloydis, Lysiennia

"Democracy until Democracy hinders Freedom."
— Former Prime Minister and Current Union Chancellor Irene Vasila

ARKLOYDIS, HDM HOUSE—The former prime minister, Irene Vasila has announced that she will be running for the position of Prime Minister in the 2024 General Elections instead of Melan Oscar. Mr Oscar has stated that—I have no intention of running for the Post of Premier and wish to retire from politics instead. This has shocked the opposition who claim that the now 77-year-old Irene may just 're-establish' her authoritarian rule as she did during the Emergency of 1980-1986. The National Deliberation's spokesperson, M. Georgia Besant has said that "[...] Mr. Oscar has not been forced to retire but he approached us saying that he wishes to 'return Madame's favor of letting him become the Premier'.

It is out of Oscar's Loyalty that he is returning the seat to its rightful owner. And for those who speak of 'authoritarianism', Madame Irene has only done things which were 'urgent' and 'quite needed'. The Emergency too was an economic boon. Where most people will end up dead in gutters, the opposition was busy planning a Coup d'etat."

Irene had previously decided to step down in the 2019 elections and nominated Melan Oscar as her successor, a member of the Lysiennian Parsi community, to please the Mittopian minority after the 2018 Protests. Based on various opinion polls, it appears that a significant majority of eligible voters—around 87%—will be voting in favor of Irene Vasila. The Liberal Party's new leader, Harwood Kennedy has stated that—I am glad that the nation has realised the worth of a great leader like Madame Vasila. While praising her he also announced that the Liberal Party will be forming an alliance with the National Deliberation for the upcoming Reichstag elections.

The Elections for the Position of Premier are to be held on the 11th of February with results being announced on the 13th. The Reichstag elections are also to occur from the 27th of February to the 29th of February with results being declared on the 1st of March.

That being said, stay tuned for further updates.

Fragile government strikes deal to prevent collapse

February 12, 2024

The Labor party reached a deal with delegates from the Party of Nations to consent to the Labor-Conservative coalition government, however they will not be a part of the government coalition.

Following tense negotiations between delegates from the Labor Party and the Party of Nations, the Labor-Conservative government has been able to hold onto its Assembly majority.

Earlier this week, ENN reported that as many as half of the delegates from the Party of Nations spoke with leadership from the United Future Party, who sought to oust the current government and form a coalition government. United Future began these talks following the dissolution of the All-People’s Front, the socialist Assembly coalition that all delegates were mandated to join.

Nations members agreed not to join the United Future delegation in forming a government, however they demanded the government make concessions on environmental and indigenous rights issues.

The Party of Nations, which has no central leadership, is a coalition of tribal leaders and indigenous activists. They splintered from the United Future party, but remained a part of their government coalition.

“I’m pleased with the promises made by the current government, but the Party of Nations reserves the right to revoke our support,” said Xerxes Ka’amaschun, a member of the Party of Nations.

Labor leader and President Tonya Prakash commented on the deal, saying “We cannot serve the people without a stable government. I thank the Nations delegates who showed their confidence.”

As you restlessly wake up and brush your teeth, you walk to your home's pourch to pick up the morning paper and the milk. On the way back inside you open the bottle and take a sip before placing the bottle into the fridge.

You take a seat on your sofa and open the newspaper. You start reading the front page as you take out your glasses.

Armavir Rebel Group Faces Opposition from Kamilistan's Government Troops

Armavir- Tensions were high in the region of Armavir in the West Kamilistan Region as the remaining rebel group was trying to maintain a hold in the region. Clashes were reported as early as December 2032, when government troops began their long-halted advancement in the region. Government troops begin swiftly advancing into the Armavir region, pushing the rebel group eastwards, towards the region of Kars. A week ago, Kamilistan's 102th National Brigade Commander, Mehmet Ali Akmiryap, made a statement about the current situation in Armavir.

"The situation in Armavir is tense as we, the 102nd National Brigade, have recaptured the city of Vagharshapat without causing any casualties or injuries."

The rebel group in question, the 72nd Free Armavir Division, alongside the Free Armavir Legion, has stated that "the 102nd National Brigade bombarded a few important buildings in the city, with at least 20 injuries reported in the city," but the statement was criticised for a lack of evidence and information by the government of Kamilistan. As of yesterday, the villages and towns of Haykashen, Lusagyugh and Griboyedov were recaptured without any strong resistance from the rebel groups, and a few armoured vehicles were left behind by the rebels

Students Protest Government’s Response to Global Conflicts
Author: Ḱirst́a-Marâ Labi
Friday, February 23, 2024

Tamara - A coalition of students from four Agausian universities—Žanžǵava University, Agausian University Tamara, Abašiže University, and Agausian University Moedani—has formed a cohesive student political union. This organization, known as Students Stand Against Violence (SǴŽT), defines itself as radically antiwar. United in their cause, they have been vocal advocates for the cessation of all conflicts, with particular emphasis on addressing the ongoing wars in Ukraine and Israel.

"The government's approach to international affairs lacks a commitment to peaceful resolutions," stated Ruslaneḱ Donomarevaže, newly elected Student Union President. "It's imperative for Agausia to advocate for diplomatic solutions and prioritize peace over perpetuating violence."

The SǴŽT strategically timed their formation to coincide with the approaching two-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Leading this initiative is Ruslaneḱ Donomarevaže, a grad student at Agausian University Moedani and the newly elected Student Union President. Donomarevaže also revealed plans for a protest scheduled for Saturday, where the student union intends to exert pressure on the government to adopt a firm stance against all aggressors.

Agausian university students, as well as young Agausians in general, are deeply concerned about regional stability, particularly due to Agausia's conscription laws. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has presented significant challenges to both the safety and economic stability of Agausians. This has sparked increased interest and involvement from the younger generation in addressing these pressing issues.

"The war's impact extends beyond mere political concerns. It has directly affected students' daily lives, hindering their ability to work, travel, and pursue educational opportunities abroad," Donomarevaže told reporters. "As a result, many young Agausians feel compelled to take action and seek solutions to mitigate the adverse effects of the conflict on their futures."

In response to these growing concerns, Students Stand Against Violence (SǴŽT) has been actively engaging with students across Agausia to raise awareness and advocate for peace. Through a series of educational campaigns, peaceful demonstrations, and dialogues with government officials, the SǴŽT aims to create a safer and more stable future for all Agausians.

While the organization appears to be gaining traction and attracting a significant number of members, it is not without its critics. Salome Šengelâ, the Rector of Agausian University Moedani, has emerged as an early opponent of the group. In a phone interview, Šengelâ expressed strong opposition stating, “Should Ukranian men hand over their land? Should Israeli soldiers sentence their own children to death?” She asserted her willingness to utilize her authority to disband the group should they disrupt the peace or interfere with the academic pursuits of students.

"Asteroid craters might erupt soon," says scientists
February 26, 2024

After testing the Volcanic Magma Detector in numerous hot spots around Naui Tu, after researching, the conclusion is that "asteroid craters might erupt soon," creating islands. How? Of course, underground temperatures (listed on the 2023 Yearly Data Map every May) were in the peak of about 1000°C-1500°C in the 2009 asteroid crater after detections in 2011, 2015, and 2019, respectively. So, they scanned around the crater for data. There was only minor temperatures just below the crater ranging from 600°C-800°C. However, it was different. In lower altitudes, there were burning magma the same as the temperature that was in the map. It was confirmed that "asteroid craters might erupt soon".

Because of this, predictions of scientists about the future of the crater and when it will erupt. Scientist Alexander Joulus said: "Because of the burning magma below the crater, the crater will become a giant underwater volcano in probably late 2025." Scientist and Physicist Grandeur Muzis said "I think the top of the crater might explode and form the first ocean floor sinkhole in 2026." Finally, American-Nauitian Geologist Logan Smith said "I have learned a lot of volcanoes. I think, it might form solid rock around the volcano and expand the crater, with the top of the crater being higher by an inch per 5 months. I predict it will do this in 2033."

Agausia's High-Stakes Bet on Tourism
Author: St́epanâ Šurigini

Tamara - As the summer tourism season rapidly approaches, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Regional Development, Tourism, and Local Economies, in collaboration with local businesses, have initiated preparations for what they hope will be a thriving tourist season. In Agausia, the summer tourist season typically spans from mid-April to August, reaching its peak between June and August.

Recent regional instability surrounding Transnistria and the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine casts a looming shadow over the optimism for the approaching tourist season. Marâm Čikovani, owner of the Blue Lounge (Lurži Lûnži) hotel since 2001, expressed concern to Tamara Ǵes, stating, “We cannot afford to stay open through another slow season.” Despite Ṕagot́i's attractions such as museums, restaurants, and beaches, Čikovani fears that a poor season may force her to shut down or sell the family-owned establishment.

The government is pinning its hopes on a combination of networking, advertising, and new legislation to enhance Agausia’s reputation as a premier vacation destination. Agausia’s state-owned airlines have collaborated with government bodies to lower ticket prices and intensify promotional efforts. Since assuming office in 2017, President Simon Aioviḱara has directed all ambassadors to prioritize cultural promotion and education initiatives in hopes of boosting tourism.

A positive sign emerges from a ski resort nestled in the Lečûm mountains, situated in Agausia's central Tsënt́ri Region. Sandro Žanžapili, the manager at Ramishi Ski and Spa Resort near the village of Omasarâ, reported that reservations for several weeks at the end of March are completely booked. "This is something we haven't witnessed in years. Hopefully, it signifies that people recognize Agausia for the safe and stunning destination it truly is."

"Despite the ongoing regional challenges, we have undertaken significant efforts to demonstrate to the international community that Agausia is a secure and hospitable destination. We strive to ensure that visitors to our country have unforgettable experiences and are inclined to return time and again." remarked Deputy Minister of Tourism, Daša Ṕalat́a (PMK).

'Mengabas kubor' (Visit the Grave) sparked the idea of housewives selling water mixed with sandalwood

Dayangku Nur Syadilla prepares water mixed with sandalwood powder for Muslims who come to the cemetery to sprinkle over the graves at the Semariang Islamic Cemetery in Petra Jaya today. - Bernama

KUCHING MARCH 10-It is customary for Muslims in this city to visit the graves or in Sarawak Malay 'mengabas kubor' (visiting the graves) of their relatives every time before Ramadan.
In addition to offering prayers for deceased relatives, visitors to the cemetery will also clean the grave area.

Due to this prevalence, a housewife, Nur Islam Jobli, 46, had the idea to produce and sell water mixed with sandalwood to visitors to sprinkle on the graves of their relatives.

"This water is brewed from home and bottled, so it's easy for them to pour it and take it anywhere... before we wrapped this sandalwood water in plastic.
"We sell when fasting or Hari Raya because many people come to 'ngabas' graves and interestingly only in the Semariang Islamic cemetery is this water sold,"
she told Bernama when met at the cemetery today.

Semariang Islamic Cemetery is the largest Islamic cemetery in Sarawak Darulhana after Santubong Islamic Cemetery and during today's survey, hundreds of visitors have already flooded the area.
Covering 25 hectares, the cemetery began to be used in 1982 and now houses over 16,000 graves.

Nur Islam started selling the mixed sandalwood water as early as 7am and according to the mother of four children, she also prepared a plastic packet containing various types of flowers and mixed pandan leaves, at a price of $5 per pack.

She, who is also helped by her daughter, said the daily sales can reach more than $300 or 60 bottles a day depending on the weather conditions.

"When it rains, less people come to buy but like today the weather is very good, so many people come to shop,"
she said, who has been running the business for the past 16 years.

Ramadhan 1445H in South Sarawak:President Assures Security for Muslims There

South Sarawak flag waved during Independence Day 7.23 in Kapit, South Sarawak

KAPIT, MARCH 10-Amidst the challenges faced by Muslims in the Dayak Peoples Republic of Sarawak, totaling 190,000 individuals, who are confronted with Islamophobia threats, they remain steadfast in observing the fasting month according to the teachings of Islam.
Despite this situation causing concerns and anxieties among Muslims, President George Ngkasan has assured them that the government of the Dayaks People's Republic of Sarawak will provide the necessary assistance and protection during the holy month of Ramadan.

President Ngkasan reaffirmed his government's commitment to ensuring the security and well-being of Muslims.
"We stand firmly by the side of Muslims in ensuring they can observe fasting peacefully and safely,"
he said firmly in an official statement.

However, South Sarawak is criticized for provocative actions against the South Sarawak Islamic Treasury Fund (TBIS). It is reported that a substantial amount of funds, totaling DDS25 million from zakat collections, has been seized by the government on grounds of diverting funds for other purposes, including security expenses. This action has drawn strong condemnation from the public, demanding transparency and accountability from the government.

In an effort to ease tensions and promote peace between regions, the governments of Sarawak Darulhana and the Dayak's People's Republic of Sarawak have held a virtual meeting. During the meeting, the government of Sarawak Darulhana sternly warned the government of the South Sarawak against inciting Islamophobic sentiments during the holy month of Ramadan. This warning is expected to prevent conflicts and promote peace between the two regions.

In a climate fraught with challenges and tensions, both countries have agreed to open border crossings between Simanggang-Engkelili, Sibu-Kanowit, and North Miri-South Miri, particularly for Muslims, so they can visit their relatives in neighboring regions. This decision is aimed at strengthening interregional relations and enhancing cooperation between the two countries.

Aioviḱara Gives Cabinet Fifty-Day Ultimatum
Author: Adam Vasilčuḱi
Thursday March 14, 2024

Image

Tamara - Agausian President Simona Aioviḱara stirred the political landscape with a decisive maneuver on Wednesday night, issuing an ultimatum to all cabinet ministers and the prime minister, demanding their resignations by May 6th. The anticipation surrounding this bold move heightened when the president's spokeswoman, Zéra Ûsuṕovi, revealed on Sunday that Aioviḱara would be making a significant announcement during a political event and fundraiser scheduled for Thursday evening.

At the event, Aioviḱara presented the government with a fifty-three-day deadline for their resignation, accompanied by an explanation of his rationale. He also outlined a contingency plan in the event of the cabinet's failure to comply with the ultimatum. "The Agausian people have voiced their discontent with the current state of affairs, citing a perceived lack of progress under the current parliament and government," emphasized the president. It is believed that this calculated maneuver is aimed at instilling accountability and bolstering government approval ratings in the months leading up to crucial regional elections.

Aioviḱara cautioned that should the government fail to meet his demands; he would call upon parliament to initiate a vote of no confidence. However, given the president's party's control over the government, such a motion would likely falter. Nevertheless, the president issued a stern warning, asserting his readiness to dissolve parliament and call for early elections "if the needs of the Agausian people remain unaddressed."

This never-before-seen political stunt pins the president against the cabinet that he appointed last year. The government, which was made of a broad coalition of left and center-left parties has seen infighting, low approval numbers, and their fair number of controversies. However, there are those who question whether the president has the authority to act in such a blazon fashion. "This sets a negative precedent of a president behaving like a bully." Said Simon Luр́ei, a member of Aioviḱara’s Social Democratic party.

However, the opposition is jumping on the possibility of early elections, as a band of center-right and right leaning parties have held a sizable lead in the polls. If this plan were to fail however, it would be an unmitigated disaster for the current government. Adding to the headache for the government and parliament is the fact that they will have just over thirty days to confirm any cabinet nominated by Aioviḱara.

POPULAR AUTHOR ARIKI RAWHITI RAKAU FOUND DEAD AGED 58

18th March 2024
ImageImageImageImage

KAITOHURA
Ariki Rawhiti Rakau, one of Tangatarehua's most influential and bestselling authors, has been found dead aged 58 in an apparent suicide.
Image
Ariki Rawhiti Rakau, photographed in 1999

Rawhiti Rakau was perhaps best known for being the creator of the internationally popular children's cartoon Magic Wand: Gifted Children (also known as 'I have impregnated these children with my large and powerful rod' thanks to a poor localisation in some languages). His novels have sold over 30 million copies internationally and have been translated into dozens of languages, with varying degrees of success.

Born in the southern city of Rangipukuriri in 1965, Ariki Rawhiti Rakau came from a Toa (noble) bloodline but despite this says he grew up "almost dirt poor", especially after his father was sentenced to two years of forced labour in 1974 for opposing Tangatarehua's ruling military junta.

The young Ariki said he withdrew into his imagination to overcome these difficulties, and this is where his love of writing stemmed from.

He studied fine arts at the Imperial University of Kaitohura and even claimed to have befriended Princess Putiputi (who is today Her Sacred Majesty the Empress) during this time, although the Imperial Household Agency have never publicly verified this story.

He published his first novel in 1986, before gaining success with the comic book series Magic Wand: Gifted Children in 1989, which he illustrated himself. It was adapted to television in 1995 and gained international attention in 2000s, albeit initially due to its comically poor translation into English.

His works were widely popular not just in Tangatarehua but throughout the world, with his life-affirming themes of beauty and truth always overcoming the forces of darkness and death resonated with readers and viewers all over the world.

Shortly before his death he posted an apparent suicide note on his website stating, "I have always lived in hope that the forces of darkness could be held back by love and beauty, however today the darkness seems to have engulfed me and I no longer see beauty of love in this world. I therefore cannot continue to remain in a world where cruelty and deception are treasured more than love or truth."

Prime Minister Tangaroa Wirihana said that Ariki Rawhiti Rakau's death was "a very sad day" for Tangatarehua.

"Ariki Rawhiti Rakau was instrumental in helping Tangatarehua project soft power through the export of our culture to young people abroad. His works have inculcated Rehuan values into the impressionable minds of foreign children, laying the groundwork for their brainwashing and the inevitable resurrection of Tangatarehua as a global military hegemon. Oh, ugh, please don't print that last part, I forgot that was all top secret."

Meanwhile, literary scholars say that Rawhiti Rakau's death casts a new light on some of his recent novels.

"His most recent works were rather difficult to interpret thematically," says literature professor Marama Kahurangi of the Imperial University of Kaitohura. "Suddenly his last three novels - 'I am very sad', 'Please someone kill me' and 'Seriously guys this novel is really just a cry for help and I'm thinking of killing myself' make much more sense in light of his tragic and untimely passing."

For many Rehuans, particularly those who grew up in the 90s, the positive messages of his cartoons will always resonate with them.

"There's a catchphrase in MW:GC that I think is universal," says Moana Aroha, 23, a grieving fan. "In the show they often say, 'The only way for the human race to survive is for us to all bend over and allow a powerful magic rod to fill us with its love juices!' and I think that's something that all people from all cultures can relate to."

BEYOND BELLARY BORDERS: BSS IN KOLLAR COUNCIL

As the Bellary Swarnayuga Samithi (BSS) gears up to secure two seats in the upcoming Class-3 Kollar Provincial Council elections — one independently and the other through a joint ticket alliance with SJP — under the Local Bodies category comprising Kodagu-Quria districts, the party's stronghold in the province becomes increasingly solidified. Let's delve into the profiles of the party's nominees — Madan Gupta and Prof. Roshan Narwal.

Nominated under the party ticket, Gupta appointment as the party's Quria district president ushered in a new era of party rejuvenation. Gupta's strategic vision revitalized BSS in Quria, a district geographically situated in Kollar Province but culturally aligned with Bellary Province, enabling the party to transition it's dormant presence into tangible political influence. Under Madan Gupta's leadership, BSS underwent a comprehensive organizational overhaul, laying the groundwork for its remarkable electoral triumphs. The impact of Madan Gupta's efforts was evident in the Quria District Council elections, where BSS secured a resounding victory by clinching an impressive 26 out of 31 seats — a historic milestone signifying the party's ascendancy to power in the district for the first time. With Gupta at helm, BSS emerged as a formidable opposition force, penetrating the traditional bastions of established political parties. In the Municipal Corporation elections of district Headquarters, Shimsha, the party's conquest of 24 wards elevated it to the status of the main opposition, displacing long-standing incumbents of Samata Party (SP), Prajasattiya Front (PF), and Matrubhumi Dalam (MTD).

Gupta's elevation as the Member of Provincial Council is widely perceived as a testament to his unwavering dedication to the party and his instrumental role in its electoral successes.

Prof. Roshan Narwal, nominated as a joint candidate on the Samanya Jana Paksha (SJP) ticket, represents a strategic alliance forged by BSS to further expand its influence. A respected academic from the Maddur Central University, Prof. Narwal's candidacy garnered the backing of 16 BSS electors and 18 SJP electors. His nomination was endorsed by the SJP, which invested significant political capital in cultivating support among academia. The selection of Prof. Narwal bears the imprint of Bellary's Deputy CM, Kishen Rao, underscoring his sustained efforts to broaden BSS's appeal beyond Bellary by mobilizing support among students and scholars across top educational institutions.

Guided by Kishen Rao and steeped in party ideology, Prof. Narwal utilized his organizational acumen to establish BSS student wings at the Maddur Central University (MCU) and its affiliated colleges, which has instrumental in expanding the party's cadre base on campus and shaping it's agenda in academic circles. His pivotal role in establishing MCU as the epicenter of BSS student activities in Kollar during nationwide student protests against the withdrawal of draconian rules of conduct imposed by the MTD-led Union Government and subsequent violence unleashed by student body of SMVP, the ideological parent of MTD, against protesting students underscores his commitment to advancing BSS's agenda.

Moreover, Prof. Narwal's candidacy is being seen as a strategic move by Kishen Rao to consolidate BSS's base ahead of the Class-1 Kollar Provincial Council elections, encompassing the Graduate Constituency of Maddur and the Teacher Constituency of Kodagu. Notably, Prof. Narwal previously served as the Chairman of the Kodagu College and University Teacher Association (KCTUA).

The presence of Madan Gupta and Prof. Narwal in the Council is expected to amplify BSS's voice and advance its ideological agenda in the legislative arena.

ADRIAN VICTORIS APPOINTED NEW PARTY MINISTER
by Anonymous Author

★★★

Former Chairman of the Public Service Commission, Adrian Victoris has been appointed as the new Party Minister by the President of the State Council, Elesha Gustauf on this Tuesday. Victoris' appointment, coming in the wake of the arrest of the previous party minister, Dr. R. S. Huxley, has come as a surprise to many observers. The former minister was arrested under charges of sedition for his role in the recent riots that took place in the Capital.

Victoris is an experienced hand in the party, having served as the chairman of the Public Service Commission, which is responsible for hiring, transferring, and dismissing public servants at all levels of government. His experience will certainly come in handy as the country recovers from the recent events, but it is not known whether his tenure will be limited to a period of transition.

President Gustauf had this to say: "I have appointed Adrian Victoris, the current Chairman of the Public Service Commission, because I trust his abilities, and I believe he will be able to help us restore the unity and stability of the nation."

"I thank the President for his confidence in me," said Victoris. "It is my greatest honor to serve the nation as the Party Minister. I will work with the President to ensure that we return to the path of peace and prosperity."

The former Party Minister, R. S. Huxley had resigned from his position on April 14th after the riots took place. He was later arrested and charged with sedition.

However, it is not clear if the charges will stick or not. A court trial is set to begin in May, and it is likely that Huxley will be granted bail until then.

The Party Minister is the second most powerful member of the State Council, behind the President. He is responsible for ensuring the smooth functioning of the government machinery and keeping the President informed about the day-to-day operations of the state.

Adrian is currently the youngest Party Minister, having been appointed at the age of 45. This makes him the second-youngest person to ever serve in this position.

He is a graduate of the National University of Lakiras and has a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Vespera. He was previously a senior executive at the Vespera Financial Corporation and is a well-known philanthropist and social activist.

Hussija officially renounces claims on Panama, embarks on a swift normalisation of relations
by Lýdie Adamová
Saturday, 31th March 2024

In a historic announcement today, the People's Republic of Hussija formally renounced its longstanding territorial claims on Panama, marking a significant shift in the nation's foreign policy stance. President Silvestr Kučera, in a televised address to the nation, declared Hussija's recognition of Panama as a sovereign and independent nation.

The decision to renounce territorial claims on Panama comes long diplomatic deliberations and reflects Hussija's commitment to fostering positive relations with its neighbours and promoting regional stability. The Panama dispute stuck out as a sore thumb in Hussija's diplomatic endeavours, usually characterised by the nation's down-to-earth and pragmatist attitude, and it became clear after the successes of the Opening Up policy that these claims were merely an obstacle to further regional cooperation. The move symbolises a departure from outdated geopolitical disputes and a renewed focus on cooperation and mutual respect in international affairs.

Hussija's historical claims on Panama date back centuries, rooted in a complex colonial history and geopolitical dynamics. Panama has been populated by Czech-speaking settlers since the 16th century, and has been a part of Hussija-proper until it was forced to cede it to the United States in the wake of defeat in the Mexican-American war. However, President Kučera emphasized the importance of acknowledging the realities of the present and paving the way for a new chapter in bilateral relations with Panama.

The renunciation of territorial claims on Panama reaffirms Hussija's commitment to diplomacy, cooperation, and respect for international law. It reflects the nation's willingness to engage in constructive dialogue with neighbouring countries for the collective benefit of all citizens.

The announcement has been met with widespread support domestically, with many praising President Kučera's leadership and vision for a more peaceful and stable region. Citizens across the nation have expressed optimism about the prospects of improved relations with Panama and the potential for enhanced cooperation in areas of mutual interest. The move marks a significant milestone in Hussija's foreign policy agenda and signals a positive step toward building stronger ties with its neighbours.

Coalition Leaders Set Summit to Replace Cabinet
Author: Ḱirst́a-Marâ Labi
Thursday April 4, 2024

Image

Tamara - Leaders of the government coalition in Agausia have scheduled a meeting with President Aioviḱara and his administration to negotiate the terms of Agausia's upcoming cabinet. It appears that parliamentary leaders are heading Aioviḱara's earlier ultimatum to dissolve parliament, signaling a swift resolution to any brewing power struggle.

In early March, the president instructed cabinet ministers to submit their resignations by May 6th, warning that he would seek a parliamentary vote for their removal if they failed to comply. Aioviḱara further threatened to utilize his authority to call for early elections if parliament did not act accordingly.

The deadline set by Aioviḱara gives the parliament less than forty days to approve any government nomination. This short timeframe is the main reason for the summit planned for April 24th. "Each party is striving to secure its involvement and presence in the administration put forward by the Agausian President," said Ana Ḱvḱvetsëâ, a Member of Parliament representing the Farmers' and Greens' Union. She is optimistic that a new cabinet will be more united and purposeful. Nonetheless, not everyone shares her optimism.

Opposition Member of Parliament, T́imoti Solomini of the Progressive Democratic Party, expressed support for the notion of early elections. “Since the beginning of this administration, the Agausian people have had minimal trust, and now they are eager to avoid having another government imposed on them without a proper mandate. Therefore, elections should be held, allowing the people to decide the type of government they want.”

In a statement last Tuesday, the president announced that he has several nominees in mind for parliamentary leaders to consider. He conveyed a firm message to parliament about the potential risks if a new government is not formed and reiterated that his party currently holds the reins. As coalition partners considered their choices, the president's emphasis on his party's authority signaled the direction he aimed to take the government.

Tamara City Government Defends 'Anti-Homeless' Law
Author: Valent́ina Bonḱa
Monday April 8, 2024

Image

Tamara - In late 2023 the Tamara City council passed several ordinances banning encampments of any kind on public property, within a parameter around schools, government, and military facilities and anywhere that is deemed “unsafe for any party involved” or “impleads the flow of civilian and commercial travel of any kind.” When passed Ordinance 5124-22 sparked a wave of controversy and debate within the community. While some residents supported the council's decision, citing concerns about safety and public health, others viewed it as an attack on the rights of the unhoused population.

Advocacy groups and activists quickly mobilized, organizing protests and petition drives to challenge the ordinances in court. After delays and calls for extensions from both sides the case was finally brought before Judge Ardena Bakt́aže on Monday. The prosecution started their opening arguments with Mayor Matei (SD), a strong proponent of the law, in attendance.

Matei defended the ordinances by highlighting strategies designed to help vulnerable populations prevent and address homelessness. The mayor clarified that it is not a prohibition on being homeless, as opponents have suggested. Instead, "this action redirects the city government's focus towards mental health support, substance abuse assistance, and affordable housing."

As tension and confusion mount, local businesses and religious organizations also weighed in on the issue, with some offering support and resources to those affected by the new rules. Those in support of the city's measures say that safety and order must be prioritized in a small and densely populated city like Tamara.

While the case will be fought in the courtroom for the next few weeks, there is a growing need for assistance in Agausia's small but growing homeless population. A combination of stagnation, a shrinking housing market, and increased immigration due to the Ukrainian war and conflicts in the Middle East have all contributed to these issues.

In February, a record number of almost two thousand individuals were identified as homeless, with nearly one thousand more at a high risk of homelessness in Tamara. The majority of those surveyed were either foreign-born or were not citizens of Agausia.
